Would it bother you if your doctor was wearing shoes like these?

I love them, but can't really justify them unless I wear them for work, at least sometimes. They have loads of styles - some are definitely innappropriate but wondered if some would be ok. Rest of outfit is usually colourful but fairly smart/ conservative.

@BeyondMyWits that is indeed the heart of the problem for me. It's not an appropriate time or place to draw attention to your 'quirky', 'unique' sense of style.

I feel exactly the same about men in bow ties or comedy socks or whatever, for those posters who were trying to twist this into a misogynistic viewpoint.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 16/07/2019 16:30

I love them.

In the autumn and winter I live in Doc Martens in frivolous and bright colors. I always get compliments and manage to do my serious and challenging job well whilst wearing them (I'm a mental health nurse). People take me seriously because I am good at my job, not related to whether my shoes are black or holographic silver.

I can run in them and the toes are covered so they meet the guidelines I think.

I'm all for cheerful shoes.

averylongtimeago · 16/07/2019 16:30

I like them, obviously the design with "poison" or smiley faces are not on, but the others? Perfectly fine.
People, including children, are often very nervous when seeing a doctor- anything which makes them more approachable is ok in my book.

Too often Doctors can appear like god from on high- so important questions go unasked.

thisnamechanger · 16/07/2019 16:31

My consultant wears tatty converse. As long as he doesn't wear them while he's operating on me I dgaf

Chochito · 16/07/2019 16:32

Doubt I'd notice. Go for it!

LolaSmiles · 16/07/2019 16:45

CollaterlyS1sters
I feel the same. There is a time and a place for different items of clothing and styles be it male or female.
Then again I'm sure I'm a bit old fashioned on this.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 16/07/2019 16:51

^ Do you honestly think you’d care about the doctor’s shoes if you were being told you had terminal cancer? Wouldn’t you have other things to think about?

Genuine question, I’m not trying to be goad^

Yes! I would and did care! Smart casual is totally fine but for that patient being told the biggest thing you'll ever hear, there are some things that are disrespectful to wear.

Also body language, facial expressions etc but clothes is part of it.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 16/07/2019 16:53

This has genuinely been a really interesting thread. I hope BloodyMaud is going to come back and tell us whether she is going to buy them or not!

Ninkaninus · 16/07/2019 16:55

I definitely think she should buy them! I just don’t think they’re appropriate for workwear.

goose1964 · 16/07/2019 17:26

I wouldn't mind if a female doctor wore them. They would make me smile. My doctor (male ) on the other hand would look ridiculous in them

Rachelover40 · 16/07/2019 18:35

I just had a look at the website and some of the shoes are gorgeous, so pretty. I can't understand why anyone would object to someone wearing them. They look quite comfortable too.

I can honestly say, hand on heart, whenever I've been to my doctor I have never noticed her shoes, not once.

CollaterlyS1sters · 16/07/2019 18:49

I can honestly say, hand on heart, whenever I've been to my doctor I have never noticed her shoes, not once.

Precisely.

Because she wasn't wearing shoes like this.

smileannie · 16/07/2019 19:09

I’d want to know where they got them so I could get a pair.

Skyejuly · 16/07/2019 19:10

I would think it was brilliant.

QueSera · 16/07/2019 19:15

I have a far, far FAR less important/respected job than you, and it would be very frowned upon if I wore shoes like that to meet clients. Your job isn't to show your patients how quirky you are. Personally, they are non-work shoes.

CollaterlyS1sters · 16/07/2019 19:23

@smileannie I’d want to know where they got them so I could get a pair.

Say you were in the middle of being told that you, or a loved one, had a malignancy with a very poor prognosis. Or dementia. Or Parkinson's. Or diabetes. Do you think you'd be thinking about how great the doctor's shoes were?

theDudesmummy · 16/07/2019 19:25

There are settings in which some of these would be not inappropriate and some absolutely inappropriate. It all depends really.

WooMaWang · 16/07/2019 19:29

The paediatrician DS2 has been seeing often wears quite similar shoes. I always think she looks pretty cool.

waitWhatNow · 16/07/2019 19:31

They aren't stuffy, professional shoes but they would make me smile! And I would find you more approachable as you clearly have a sense of humour and sense of fun!

HeadintheiClouds · 16/07/2019 19:35

A sense of fun! is not something I look for in a medical professional, to be perfectly honest. Seeing someone wearing toddler type shoes would not actually put me at my ease, quite the reverse.

MrMeSeeks · 16/07/2019 19:38

Do it.
It would prob make me feel more at ease, more able to open up, but end of day if you’re a good doc it really doesn’t matter what you wear.
If you’re happy and confident in them then buy them Smile

theDudesmummy · 16/07/2019 19:47

It depends very much on what kind of a doctor she is, in what setting and at what level

applesandacorns · 16/07/2019 19:56

I wouldn't wear them myself, but I wouldn't mind seeing a cheery shoe at the doctor's office.

Trixibell79 · 16/07/2019 19:59

I’m a GP and I think certain styles of these really aren’t an issue. Not the smiley face ones- clearly inappropriate for more serious moments. I once had a pair of Birkenstock mules, designed by Heidi Klum that had Seals lyrics from Kissed by a Rose written all over them. Like a PP wrote, I did get a bit sick of constant questions about them!
Really interested to see that some posters on here think GP’s earn that much that we shouldn’t have to justify a £45 spend, 🤣 seriously, not had a pay rise in 5 years

sandalsinthebin · 16/07/2019 20:38

Are you a lady doctor? If so they're fine and quirky and I'd think you're probably brainy and self confident. Maybe not so much if you're a male doctor.
