Do you wear slips?

Hello everyone

And...
Do they improve the look of your outfits?
Are they comfortable?
Which brands do and don't you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I go to John Lewis and buy their knee length slips. Find them the most comfortable.

thisenglishlife · 13/07/2019 22:37

Thanks Teddybear45 - their own brand versions?

Yes and Yes.
John Lewis and M&S. And if you get any naysayyers coming on here later to say that slips are for OAPs, smile sweetly and let them crack on without 😁

soupmaker · 13/07/2019 22:41

Yes and yes and yes.

M&S full dress slip. Have one in black and one in beige. Wear with dresses and the odd blouse and skirt combination for work. Brilliant in the winter as an extra layer too.

I get cheap ones from wish in different colour cottons. Also some nicer slightly more expensive ones from wish.

WitsEnding · 13/07/2019 22:45

Yes, yes, M&S but only because it's the only place I can find them locally. I prefer waist slips for most clothes and have different lengths for different skirts.

Mayborn · 13/07/2019 23:06

Genuine question, what do they add to an outfit? I’ve only ever considered under white dresses or thin material, would be willing to try for right reasons

redexpat · 13/07/2019 23:08

Warmth!
And if a dress has a bit of a low top it makes a nice contrast and raises the neckline.
They smooth out lumps and bumps.

M&S and Calvin Klein

They make everything hang better, smooths out the lines and helps with warmth.

thisenglishlife · 13/07/2019 23:13

Some reasons I've seen:
Stops clothes from clinging, smooths out outline
Good for dresses that aren't lined
Protects skin from itchy fabric or embellishments
Preserves and protects clothes (eg from oil, creams, sweat, etc)
Modesty

I'd never considered this... if you don't mind me asking, how old are all the slip advocates? The only person I know IRL who wore them was my granny, but clearly I'm missing out here!

championquartz · 13/07/2019 23:20

M+S because they do different lengths.

Clothes hang much better. They take away static. Clothes look better - more substantial iykwim and they add a certain smoothness to the movement of the dress/skirt.

thisenglishlife · 13/07/2019 23:22

The age doesn't really matter if they work?

Ooh this thread is making me want to buy one !!

Anois · 13/07/2019 23:31

I haven't worn a slip since I was a child, they seem to have fallen out of favour. I do quite like the look of the matching chemise you see with some expensive lingerie, but would consider them more boudoir than practical, everyday items.

Rainatnight · 13/07/2019 23:33

I’m early 40s, wear them with certain outfits and have done for more than a decade. I have one knee length half slip from a vintage shop and one very short half slip from M&S.

They stop dresses clinging to tights, is my major advantage in my book. And just give an overall smoother appearance, with less cling and lumps and bumps. I also just feel more ‘dressed’ and put together with one on (though I don’t wear them every day, just with certain dresses).

ZazieTheCat · 13/07/2019 23:35

Yes, love ‘em. Hanro, Sunspel and Cotton Real.

All the reasons previously mentioned are great. And I’ll add they are an extra thin layer in winter for the multiple thin layers approach to keeping warm.

championquartz · 13/07/2019 23:36

They also get rid of see-throughedness. Which is a bit inappropriate at work. And most places really, apart from the beach or pool.

thenightsky · 13/07/2019 23:38

Yes. I've got three - black, white and nude. They make cheap unlined dresses look better by replacing the missing lining.

Mayborn · 13/07/2019 23:44

I might did one out to try next time, thanks all!

CMOTDibbler · 13/07/2019 23:44

Yes, yes, m&s- I have a few in different lengths and colours.
They make everything look better. I'm in my 40s, but have worn them since m&s first brought out microfibres slips in my very early 20s. Though back then I did sometimes wear a short one as outer wear!

Teddybear45 · 13/07/2019 23:45

I get John Lewis’ own brand ones that are around £20. I think it’s the seamless one.

SleightOfMind · 13/07/2019 23:46

They make dresses hang and swish so much better.

Doobigetta · 13/07/2019 23:46

I can see the point of them, but the name just makes me think of my mother and her hundreds of slightly bizarre clothing rules. I’d feel I had turned into her if I started wearing them.

Lenny1980 · 13/07/2019 23:48

I mainly wear them to stop dresses sticking to tights when dresses aren’t lined. And if a bit see through.
