What to wear to the gym as an unfit person?

hi all, I need to start going to the gym to help me lose weight and get fit. I’m 5 foot 2 and 16 for bottoms and 16 or 18 on top. I’m very self conscious about being Overweight, especially of my fat belly and rolls of fat on my back Blush - not knowing what to wear is part of the reason why I don’t go at the moment. I’d like something to cover me up but don’t want to be a complete geek. Has anyone any ideas as to what I could buy to start me off? Thanking you all in advance

I'd just go to Primark and get some jogging bottoms and big baggy cotton T-shirt's if you're self-conscious x

newmomof1 · 12/07/2019 19:51

Also, don't worry about how you look. Nobody else will even notice. They'll all be sweaty horrible messes and heading towards the same goals Smile

Dinosforall · 12/07/2019 19:52

I would go to Primark or Sainsbury's and get a loose workout top and leggings (do the squat test to check your pants aren't visible when you bend over). I think both brands do plus sizes. And don't forget a sports bra!

VictoriaBun · 12/07/2019 19:52

Yes joggers or 3/4 leggings and a baggy top.

Dinosforall · 12/07/2019 19:54

MN put that link in, not me!

Baggy breathable clothes. Once you’ve been a few times you’ll realise no one cares. I used to be self conscious of my left over baby belly but now not so much.

Ginandsonic · 12/07/2019 19:56

I'm a 22, I wear leggings and either a baggy men's t shirt or a longline vest, basically depending on what's clean when I pack my bag.

Asvan · 12/07/2019 19:56

I've just recently started the gym. I was worried about what to wear too, but it's really not a big deal. There will be people there of all shapes and sizes, wearing anything from crop tops to big, baggy t-shirts! I usually wear one of my DHs t-shirts, which are big and baggy on me and cover my backside. I pair these with leggings or jogging bottoms. Honestly, you will be fine. Don't let it hold you back from going. Good luck.

longhaulstress · 12/07/2019 19:56

I'd get some black/patterned fitness leggings the thick Lycra ones and that come up quite high on your waist then a loose sports t shirt top you can get ones that have a nice lower cut hem at the front and back so none of it will cling to your body. If you're extra worried I'd pair that with a long line vest top just the cheap ones you can get from H&M. That always used to make me feel better about bending/stretching and that my bottom was covered!

mintich · 12/07/2019 19:57

I used to wear leggings and a baggy t-shirt when I started going.
But I honestly don't notice what anyone else has on, everyone is too bothered about themselves!
Hope you enjoy the gym!

BackforGood · 12/07/2019 19:59

Most people in the gym classes I go to wear leggings and a baggy t-shirt. I find my legs get hot so I prefer shorts, but honestly, nobody is interested in looking at anyone else. There are ALL sort of sizes and shapes and ages and fitness levels in my gym.
I was put off for a long time because I though everyone would be fitter and in better shape generally than me, but they definitely are NOT.

HeyMicky · 12/07/2019 19:59

Don't wear baggy tops, they'll get in the way.

Get some high waisted leggings. Then a plain black tight fitted workout vest top with decent length in the body. Then a looser, pretty workout vest over the top.

The bottom layers hold you in and the top layer skims over the top. And if the top layer rides up there's no belly on show.

Decent sports bra, too.

^ Never have for me Confused

Agree that a sports bra is a must.

randomsabreuse · 12/07/2019 20:01

Given current temperatures look at some of the flowing athleisure type tops with lots of mesh. Might still be in some Aldis.

Main thing is comfort so a good bra that pins everything down. I tend to need a compression layer on top of that for boob restraint purposes (currently L cup!) then add a looser tech top.

Leggings are good for freedom of movement- no-one will be looking at you. Or yoga pants with slim legs - Decathlon have some that are comfortable.

MacInTheBox · 12/07/2019 20:03

Get a good sports bra, well fitting leggings and trainers. I just stick on any old top, normally baggy and if it gets in the way I'll take a hairband and tie it up.

Main thing is that you are comfy and supported for an effective workout - to hell with anyone else!

Spookydot · 12/07/2019 20:06

Adidas do some cool leggings and work out tops in plus sizes

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 12/07/2019 20:07

Nobody will really notice what you wear as long as your leggings aren't see through !!

No matter what shape or size you are seeing your pants through thin gym leggings is not a good look Wink

And yes, like others have said, a decent sports bra is a must

Firgoodnesssake · 12/07/2019 20:39

Thank you all Smile

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in and be proud of yourself that you are there and starting to make life better by making yourself feel better!

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 12/07/2019 20:40

Just make sure the leggings are high waisted. Most are. They'll pull your tummy right in!

BiscuitDrama · 12/07/2019 20:43

I have a really nice two layered top. Under layer is long and top layer is baggy. You ideally want gym type fabric as it’s cooler.

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 21:04

The same thing as the fit people. 🙂

Fitness leggings, fitness top (baggy if you prefer).

Good, supporting shoes - very important.

timeforawine · 12/07/2019 21:07

I wear a strap top with a baggy t shirt over the too. Bottoms cropped thin jogging bottoms,LA gear from sports direct

efc1878 · 12/07/2019 21:11

H & M sportswear is good. I always work out in vest top- I get too hot with sleeves! I take a loose t-shirt or jumper to wear on way in and out as more of a cover up.

StickyProblem · 12/07/2019 21:12

I was a 20/18 when I started, now I am a 12 Smile I think I wear some of the same stuff.
As a PP said, wear the same as the fit people!
I need to keep my boobs under control so I wear:
Leggings, sports bra, tight vest tucked in, looser t shirt or vest over the top, tracksuit top to wear over the top and take it off once you warm up.
Good luck and enjoy it. Three years ago I did nothing ever - now I work out 4-5 times a week and absolutely love it. There will be bigger people there than you, nobody is looking!
