What to wear to the gym as an unfit person?

hi all, I need to start going to the gym to help me lose weight and get fit. I’m 5 foot 2 and 16 for bottoms and 16 or 18 on top. I’m very self conscious about being Overweight, especially of my fat belly and rolls of fat on my back Blush - not knowing what to wear is part of the reason why I don’t go at the moment. I’d like something to cover me up but don’t want to be a complete geek. Has anyone any ideas as to what I could buy to start me off? Thanking you all in advance

The gym go to hand people of all shapes, sizes and ages. Most women under 60 regardless of size wear leggings (fitness/exercise ones are best). Top wise some wear t-shirts, some quick dry fitness tops some tight fit, some looser fit (these stop you feeling as sweaty).
You can buy the clothes for a reasonable price but do get a decent sports bra or two!

I have no idea how or why the word leggings is taking you to a link!!!! Not my doing.

It’s a new affiliate link thing that MN is doing.

Really good sports bra is essential. USA Pro in sports direct do a boyfriend T and loose fit tanks. They're made of dry fit fabric so are very thin and don't cling when sweaty (like a normal cotton T shirt does).

I've also had some of their tights which are quite thick and stay up.

In my experience, nutrition will have the biggest impact on your weight loss and resistance training on your shape. I'm the same height as you and was the same size 6 months ago.

Honestly, no-one will care how you look, don't put it off any longer, just think of what you could achieve by Christmas!

Dear god don't wear a baggy t shirt to the gym.

I was a size 18 but always went in Lululemon leggings, sport bra, bra top and a tight vest. No one looks or cares OP. I promise.

I first went in a baggy t shirt and spent most of the time wresting it down off my head when doing any bending over. I had to hold it down when running or jumping. Also it's far too hot. Any sweat and it's vile and clings horribly. I ditched it immediately after my first visit and I've never gone back.

Depends on the exercise you're doing OP. I've always worn 3/4 length tracksuit bottoms, a t shirt and sports bra. Cant be bothered with expensive gym kit as it's not a place I associate with good looks, it's just a place to exercise.

I've always found my cheap sports clothes comfortable, I tend to do zumba and treadmill/cross trainer.

I was very unfit when I joined the gym a year ago. I was a size 18 and now a 16. I wear stuff from Tesco and Lidl. I'm past the stage of worrying what people think. No ones bothered. It's a big thing to start, I'd never set foot in a gym before and I'm 48. The most important thing is a supportive bra and decent trainers. Lidl trainers are brilliant. My instructor wears them and she's absolutely fierce, so if they're good enough for her...

I wear a baggy t-shirt, loose tracksuit bottoms and a normal bra, complete with underwiring! It really depends what you're doing. I'm lifting free weights so it's fine. The only issue is that I like a longer t-shirt for overhead presses, so my size 24 stomach isn't exposed.

Honestly, don't feel self-conscious. Everyone's far too concerned with their own stuff to worry about other people.
