GHDs have broken, what do I replace them with? Air Wrap? More GHDS? Other?

My trusty GHDs which I think are about 10 years old have finally packed up.

I've been toying with the idea of the Air Wrap for a while - could I buy this and do without GHDs?

Are GHDs still the best?

Or should I be looking for another type of straightener?

Hair is down to my armpits, there's lots of it but it's fine and thus lacks body.

Recommendations please Smile

I'm in love with my airwrap but I still occasionally still use my straighteners. The airwrap has been a game changer in the quality of my hair

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 12/06/2019 08:19

I've never had anything but GHDs and my second pair is older than my DS (12!). Friends have tried different tongs which I've used and for me, nothing compares to GHD

Baxdream · 12/06/2019 08:39

The air wrap is amazing. It is absolutely a game changer in the condition of your hair. You can definitely straighten it with it. If you want poker straight hair I'd get some babyliss ones to run over quickly but you will rarely want to.
I've only had mine a month and I've had so many comments including from men! I haven't used my straighteners once since I got the airwrap and I have wavy frizzy hair!

GHD. the newer platinum model is great. didnt realise the upgrade would make such a diff.

CutesyUserName · 12/06/2019 09:09

Cloud 9's. They are what GHD's used to be (company founded by the original founder of the GHD company).

botemp · 12/06/2019 09:17

@star8, I've been contemplating the platinum plus. Do you use the it to curl/wave with as well? Is there a noticeable difference to preserving the health of hair as they promise?

historysock · 12/06/2019 09:22

Cloud 9's.

What is this airwrap you speak of?

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/06/2019 09:32

Amazon kipozi wide plates. Amazing for the price.

Honeyplop · 12/06/2019 09:33

I plan on getting cloud9's when my ghd's give up the ghost.

Baxdream · 12/06/2019 11:03

This is the airwrap

GenericDietCola · 12/06/2019 11:11

Another vote for Kipozi from Amazon. They’re just as good as GHD for a fraction of the price.

Whoops75 · 12/06/2019 11:15

I’m following this.
My GHD is coming to the end after 15 years

UpToonGirl · 12/06/2019 11:24

My 12year old GHD's gave up the ghost a few months ago and I replaced with some cheapies (Remmington or Revlon, can't remember) they were ok but the difference was noticeable. Then I got the Airwrap, I love it. It does take some practice, I mainly use the curling attachment which gives me bouncy waves. The hairbrush attachment does give me fairly sleek hair but if I wanted it really straight I would have to use straighteners after drying (just to run over it). I am planning on getting some cloud9's at some point but as I don't really need them I'm just waiting until they come on offer.

My hair is wavy/frizzy and generally doesn't hold much of a style.

star8 · 12/06/2019 11:45

use for waves. my sis does curls with it so is possible. i used to use the old ghd wide plates. once i tried platinum i had to buy it even though mine were still working. Hair is much shinier and i feel like it looked better and straighter for longer. defo not as harsh.

botemp · 12/06/2019 12:42

Thanks @star8 that's really helpful Smile

MooBaaLaLaLa · 12/06/2019 13:17

Ooh, just looked at that link to the airwrap, looks amazing!
Very expensive though. Is it hard to do? I've never managed to make curling tongs to work before Blush

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 12/06/2019 14:09

I have the airwrap, it’s great for the condition of my hair but I can’t make the curls stay in for longer than an hour or two. It might last linger on straightened hair.

Baxdream · 12/06/2019 15:21

It lasts until I wash in mine. I use a blow dry spray and the cool setting.
I find it really easy but I watched a lot of YouTube videos! Don't give up on the first try as it's so different to other stylers.

caffeinebuzz · 12/06/2019 15:28

I love my airwrap, but still need to quickly run my GHDs over the top. I guess you could do with cheaper straighteners though.

NotPennysBoat · 12/06/2019 15:37

Is the airwrap an alternative to a hairdryer, or do you still need to use hairdryer first?

Baxdream · 12/06/2019 15:52

It comes with a hairdryer attachment along with brushes so no you don't need a hairdryer.
I've not touched any other styler or hairdryer since I bought mine

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 12/06/2019 15:59

@Baxdream - what blow dry spray do you use? I love the way mine looks straight after I’ve dried it and it’s so frustrating that it doesn’t last.

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 12/06/2019 16:40

I've got some Kipozi of Amazon, cost £24 and they are as good as GHD.

IAmDetermined · 12/06/2019 19:26

Cloud 9s were good and never lost heat. However they only lasted 13months...broke just after the 12month guarantee! Then I got some cheap ones! I wanted GHDs but so so many reviews were negative after they changed. Anyone with the original/older versions seems to love them but people with any less than 5years old seem disappointed!

arganlady · 12/06/2019 19:31

I've got the the straighteners and curling wand and haven't even looked at them since I got an air wrap. It's literally changed my life.
