If you could have full access to anyone's wardrobe who would you choose?

Can be anyone, celebrity/royal/politician, alive or dead. Mine would be Alexa Chung, although after seeing an exhibition of Grace Kelly's clothes at the V&A a a few years ago I would be sorely tempted by hers Grin

I have long coveted Harriet Vane’s cloth of gold wedding dress. And suspect she probably had a lot of fun with clothes once she became Lady Peter and had limitless money.

I coveted it, too, but doesn't someone else describe it (one of the Wimseys? One of the dons?) as 'gold lamé' -- which makes it sound a bit nightclub chanteuse for St Cross church...?

Bodicea · 12/06/2019 15:37

Joan Watson the character’s wardrobe in elementary. I would also need Lucy Liu’s figure as my boobs wouldn’t fit in any of it.

XingMing · 12/06/2019 15:49

Sofia Coppola. So simple, very casual, and perfect.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 12/06/2019 16:01

That person was an idiot Dervish! It was ‘a period gown in stiff gold brocade‘ - so nothing like lamé which is ... limp. I found some photos of potential lookalikes in google - but they’re nothing like the dress I I’m imagining. Which is admittedly rather Tudor in outline.

FreezerBird · 12/06/2019 17:01

It's one of the Dons who describes it as gold lamé - she says she never thought Harriet Vane could look so impressive, and at first put it down to the effect of gold lamé, but on reflection thought it was probably 'lerve'.

DeptfordDervish · 12/06/2019 17:28

You're quite right, @FreezerBird. I wasn't sure whether we were supposed to see her getting the fabric so wrong as a sign of donnish absence of mind or donnish incomprehension of why anyone would get married, 'lerve' or not.

I suspect Harriet always looks understated and entirely 'right' in her clothes, anyway, and as though she hasn't given them a moment's thought.

Though even as Sayers is being snide about the awful frocks of the other old members at the gaudy in Gaudy Night, which don't go with academic gowns, one can't help feeling that Harriet, in floor-length long-sleeved black, must have looked as though she was attending a rather grand funeral rather than a garden party once the gowns came off.

I also inwardly sigh at Harriet undertaking a walking holiday in Have His Carcase with only a change of underwear, a novel and her washing things in a bag (Sayers is even snide about women who travel with sunscreen), and walking into a grand hotel and acquiring the satorial wherewithall for an extended stay, including a knockout claret frock that looks so wonderful Lord Peter's monocle falls out.

Hermione Norris' character Karen in cold feet however in order to look as good I'd need to grow 4 inches in height and lose at least 4 stone 😳

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 12/06/2019 18:48

Seeing as I'm the same age, Helen Mirren.

Greenglassteacup · 12/06/2019 18:50

It would depend on whether I could have a different body type

DXBMermaid · 12/06/2019 18:52

Fictional; Rayna Jaymes from Nashville. Love a bit of country chique.

Real: Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

IHeartKingThistle · 12/06/2019 18:53

Margo Ledbetter's from The Good Life (so much wafting!)

Also Reece Witherspoon's in Walk the Line (OK fine, and Legally Blonde!).

Princess Margaret's from the 1950s. Dreamy...

BovrilonToast · 12/06/2019 18:59

Georgina from Riviera. You’d need Cote D’Azur weather though.

Alsohuman · 12/06/2019 19:22

Zandra Rhodes. I wish I had the guts.
