Not on most 'moms', that's for sure! Not on anyone who remembers them from the first time round either! Grin
They only look good if you are wearing them in an ironical way!

Fresta · 07/06/2019 10:58

And what do we think about boyfriend jeans while we are on the topic?

FionasWineShow · 07/06/2019 11:01

I only seem to see them on very young, student-y looking women. And they always seem to be carrying a little extra weight. Either that, or that's what Mom jeans do to a person.

I love boyfriend jeans (non-ripped, natch). I like the loose through the leg cut, and the lower-slung waist. It doesn't accentuate the hips and tum like Mom jeans do.

Floisme · 07/06/2019 11:02

As I've said, that's why I'd be careful what I wore them with, so that they looked modern rather than retro.

I really don't understand this idea that you shouldn't wear something, not because it doesn't suit you but because it might look better on someone else. It seems such a negative, joyless approach. For the record, I have never, and never will look as good as Katherine Hepburn but I'd never let it stop me wearing wide leg trousers.

Deliheaven · 07/06/2019 11:08

Totally agree flo. I am a size 14 so in theory pretty much everything I wear would look much better on a much slimmer woman. But I refuse to be drawn into that, it would make me miserable. Women over a size 10 shouldn’t be told to just wear classic clothes because they might suit them better, or hide their shape, or that they can’t do fashion clothes, or clothes too young for them (another issue). It puts larger women and older women into a joyless box where they can never be as attractive as someone slimmer or younger. If I was alive many years ago I would have been considered beautiful like a rubanesque painting.

These look terrible on everyone IMO, which is probably a sign that I'm getting old Grin

People should wear what they want, though, and there are worse looks ... like these half-jeans-half-joggers I saw in French Connection yesterday ... I mean WTAF

I'm a bit chubby around my belly and I think they actually look nice. They do wonders for muffin tops! I wear mine with a tight(ish) black t shirt, then tuck that into some nice high waisted mom jeans. They don't then cling to my chunky belly/hip/thigh area, making me look curvy on the bottom and small on top.
This could all be in my head though and I could look awful!! 😂😂

FionasWineShow · 07/06/2019 12:12

Oh crikey, that's exactly what they do do on everyone I see them in, and why I avoid them like the plague! Grin The tummy is just accentuated below the belt, instead of above!

To each their own, I'm know other people hate slouchy boyfriend jeans, which I think are far preferable to unforgiving, figure-hugging Mom jeans.

getmeacupoftea · 07/06/2019 15:03

@FionasWineShow
You know mom jeans are the high-waisted baggy/straight cut ones? Kinda 90's style. I think we have different views on what they are 🤪

lhastingsmua · 07/06/2019 15:17

I think they look nice on slim women but they can be unflattering in that they can make your figure look straight up and down/give you a flat bum

So I think they look really best on someone with curvy hips, small waist and a nice bum, because they can just pull them off nicer!

I’m short and have never found a pair that look right on me, with these jeans you need a decent amount of ankle on show to pull off the aesthetic

FionasWineShow · 07/06/2019 19:14

I know getmeacupoftea - but they always looks so tight on the women I see in them. Or maybe it's just the women I notice in them!

Perhaps they're squeezing into a size or two too small. Its not the legs so much, more the whole area immediately under the belt, since they're inevitably worn with a tucked in top, so it's accentuated.

I have just realised that the kids' willowy 20-something hipster babysitter wears them, and they do look a lot looser on her.

I'm inclined to think they're unflattering on many figures - but when has that ever stopped us, en mass, embracing a cut of jeans?! 😆

EdWinchester · 07/06/2019 19:17

Mum jeans look good on no-one.

CountFosco · 07/06/2019 20:46

I love mom jeans, I'm a short hourglass and they accentuate my waist and hold my tummy in. I hate midrise jeas with a passion and as for low waist! Eugh.

But the reality is if the mom jean becomes the dominant shape we'll all wear them and look back on skinnies like we look at bootlegs and think 'OMG they are so old fashioned and dowdy'.

FionasWineShow · 07/06/2019 21:03

I haven't seen anyone wearing them with a tummy being held in. If you have a tummy, Mom jeans will zero in on it.

How can an ostensibly 'loose' cut hold anything in? I think this is why some people appear to size down ... which only further accentuates.

lhastingsmua · 07/06/2019 21:07

To be honest, I think Mom jeans have been replaced in popularity by Straight leg jeans. I also think jeans with a turned up hem aren’t as trendy/nice as jeans that are already angle grazer length - just looks cleaner

Racheyg · 07/06/2019 21:14

Can I ask where I can buy decent "mom" jeans?

Ellapaella · 07/06/2019 21:31

@Racheyg these are mine. Yes that's me, at the very old age of 40, not a size 8 and a Mum daring to wear (gasp!) Mom jeans, thinking I'm like 19 or something... how very dare I GrinWink
Mine are by Bershka and I love them.

Racheyg · 07/06/2019 21:41

@Ellapaella oh they look great. Right I'm off to Bershka. Loving it with the crisp white t-shirt

CountFosco · 07/06/2019 22:37

They tend to be made with heavier less stretchy denim than skinnies and should fit at the waist to hips and be baggy in the leg so yes, as long as you are wearing jeans that fit well they hold in a tummy reasonably well. Of course, I'm not very big so my tummy is not that big anyway, it's a more comfortable jean than the thin denim used for skinnies that show every seam on your underwear.

ChuggaChuggaChoooChooo · 09/06/2019 12:35

I tried some on for the first time yesterday... they were like clown trousers! Ridiculous shape to them.
Shame, because I'm bored stiff of skinny jeans now and can't find any decent straight legs!

Ellapaella · 09/06/2019 13:25

@ChuggaChuggaChoooChooo have a look at Gap girlfriend jeans - essentially they are straight leg jeans that are slightly cropped.

ChuggaChuggaChoooChooo · 09/06/2019 14:01

Ooh thanks @Ellapaella they sound right up my street! Love gap stuff... can't believe I didn't think to check there!

TheHoundsofLove · 09/06/2019 18:09

I don't know whether they still have them, but Tu girlfriend jeans are essentially this shape. I love mine and find them pretty flattering - I'm a size 12 but with slim legs and hips and not much of a waist. I definitely think they're much more flattering than skinny jeans, especially with flats and sandals.
