I think they’re wasted on thin women. In fact I can’t see the point of them unless you’ve got a waist. It’s a trend that could actually suit a curvier shape better than a straight up and down one.

goodluckandgodspeed · 06/06/2019 10:32

So are people looking at me and thinking ‘noooo! Tragic!’
Perhaps I will just wear them in the house when doing housework. Like a mom. In mom jeans.

Ellapaella · 06/06/2019 10:33

I'm a 40 year old mum and I love Mom jeans. My DH says I look like a member of Bananrama in them but I take that as a compliment.

Ellapaella · 06/06/2019 10:34

Oh and I'm 5'7 size 10-12 and fairly straight up and down with no defined waist. But I've seen some curvy people wearing them and think they look amazing.

thedevilinablackdress · 06/06/2019 10:35

Ella definitely a compliment!

BelulahBlanca · 06/06/2019 10:35

I wear them and I’m a mum.

goodluckandgodspeed · 06/06/2019 10:37

I’m mid 30s and a size 8. But I’m not super tall. Only 5ft 6.

goodluckandgodspeed · 06/06/2019 10:51

Yeah but Ella you look great in basically anything 😂

Teddybear45 · 06/06/2019 10:53

It suits the small hipped and big bellied.

Laniakea · 06/06/2019 11:20

The my sister looks incredible in them - 5’7 7 & a half stone, 25 & willowy. I look like a sack of crap - 5’2 11 & a half stone, 44 & an hourglass.

Rooftree · 06/06/2019 11:24

Agree with flo that they look nice on a curvier shape with hips and a bum, they really them accentuate a waist

Ellapaella · 06/06/2019 11:36

@goodluckandgodspeed I very much doubt anyone in real life is looking at you and thinking you look tragic! I have no doubt you look lovely. And thank you for your lovely compliment. There are most definitely some things that really don't suit me at all though - I've just got better at working it out and avoiding them!

'Mom' jeans to me are high waisted jeans with a loose but tapered leg. Not just high waisted skinny jeans. There are all sorts of jeans being sold as 'Mom' jeans at the moment that just look like high waisted slim or skinny leg jeans.

foreverhanging · 06/06/2019 12:06

I saw a lady called helenanderz on Instagram the other day style them and she's pretty curvy and they looked great. Not sure I'm brave enough with big boobs as well.

moonpiggle · 06/06/2019 12:40

Yes Helen Anderson has a youtube channel also, very body confident and inspiring. I think shes ace and wears what she likes, simple.

Soola · 06/06/2019 13:35

I wear them. I’m slim with a small waist and they make my legs look longer.

Musicforsnorks · 07/06/2019 01:25

I think it is torso length that makes or breaks the look.
I’m thin but have longer legs compared to torso, and really high waisted stuff seems to swallow me and make me look like my waist is touching my tits.

It’s a shame because I like high waisted clothes.

PinkLipsDontLie · 07/06/2019 06:18

It's really amusing that some people seem to think you are allowed to wear only midi skirts and demure dresses after the age of 34,5. You are a mom ffs. Mom jeans only until the age of 16.
I say they fit a pear shape too, basically anyone with a small(er) defined waist. And the super slim, because well they fit anything 😊

And whatever age you are, you can wear anything that flatters your body. I see many 30-40yr old mums with really fit bodies. If you believe things only look good on your daughter, it is not because of age, it's because of weight.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 07/06/2019 09:11

I disagree, actually. The hipster, ironic wearing of previously unfashionable items (mom jeans, scrunches, snow-washed denim) along with dyed grey hair looks hipster and ironic when worn by youngsters. When worn by middle-aged people it just looks like you never stopped wearing them/have grey hair. Not because it isn't flattering to body shape, just that the incongruity is part of the look. Similarly, when I was in my youth I wore vintage twinsets and carried 60s handbags - wouldn't now, because I can't carry it off any more.

LucidDream · 07/06/2019 09:25

They don't suit anyone with even a suggestion of a tummy.

Floisme · 07/06/2019 09:40

They're now mainstream fashion again, so retro/ irony doesn't come into it any more. You might just have a point if someone wore them in exactly the same way as they did in the 80s e.g. full length with white socks and a perm and a bandana. The trick is to tweak them so they look modern.

I can only assume this idea that you can't wear anything you wore when you were young originated from a teenager who thought they'd be dead at 40.

Redandblue11 · 07/06/2019 09:57

I am fairly slim and tallish, a bit of rectangle shape but with an arse and I wear mine and even get compliments (I assume they are honest!). The top I keep it fitted so as pp said accentuate slim waist —illusion in my case—
and I am not a teenager and I could be the mother of a current teen!
I shall continue to wear them as long as I like.

Redandblue11 · 07/06/2019 10:03

Forgot to say Goodluck you look great on them.

TapasForTwo · 07/06/2019 10:06

I'm a pear, and they look awful on me. DD is a tall slim size 10 and looks fabulous in them.

Doobigetta · 07/06/2019 10:06

I don’t think it has anything to do with whether or not they flatter you. More that if you wore them in 1990 and you wear them again now you run the risk of looking as though you’ve been wearing them for the whole of the intervening 30 years. Obviously you’re at liberty not to give a shit about that.

anothernotherone · 07/06/2019 10:50

Everyone should obviously wear what they want, ideally nobody should dress for anyone else. I do think they are hard to wear and look better on the very young, and no - it's not just weight related. Over 40s (and I am over 40) wearing them look as though they're wearing them for camouflage in a way teens don't. Perhaps that's what it is - teens look as though they're wearing them deliberately, their mothers look as though they just never took them off... I know a very slim woman in her 50s who wears them and of course she should wear them if she wants, or anything else she wants, but it's a totally different effect to when a 19 year old wears them. She looks as though she's wearing them because they are practical and the teens look slightly surprising in them, because it's a tiny bit incongruous but in a good way.
