Black dress to summer wedding?

MrsJamieFraser2 · 30/05/2019 21:37

I've seen a gorgeous cream and black hat for a summer wedding.

Would it be frowned upon to wear a black dress such as this one from Reiss? I'm not sure what the etiquette is!

@Elllllle You're right...my best friend wore black as a bridesmaid. I do think that it's best to feel comfortable and good about myself and I can make it look more 'out there' perhaps with heels and jewellery.

Plus the hat is quite a statement hat. It's does come in red however...maybe that's the answer.

Tha dress is lovely ! And you would probably get wear out of it . I have worn black to both summer and winter weddings with different coloured accessories - as have many others I have seen over the years . Lots of people don’t even wear black for funerals these days !

The red hat is gorgeous and a great statement piece. Don’t go with matching shoes. Or you could go blk/wht for hat and get a bag in that lovely red instead.

Snipples · 31/05/2019 16:56

I quite like the black dress. I wore dress to my friends wedding - just dropped her a line first to check she didn't mind and she wasn't arsed. Just ask the bride would be my advice. It'll be quite weddingy when you add the hat.

MrsJamieFraser2 · 31/05/2019 17:36

@Buffymum That's my concern really, I want to get my money's worth out of it.

@Ninkaninus Do you think the red hat with the black dress?

Ninkaninus · 31/05/2019 17:48

Yes if you wear the black dress you can go with either version of the hat. But if you get the black hat make sure you go bright with bag or shoes (or both, but not matching IMO).

Ninkaninus · 31/05/2019 17:50

But you could get lots of wear out of absolutely any dark dress that you buy. Just saying, no need to go for black just to ‘get your money’s worth”.

Coloured shoes and wrap, black dress and amazing hat, no bother

slithytove · 31/05/2019 17:59

Hat is nicer in monochrome

Ninkaninus · 31/05/2019 18:03

I’m inclined to agree, I’d stick with the monochrome hat and go red/orange/coral or otherwise bright with bag. I’m guessing the monochrome hat will be more versatile, too.

MrsJamieFraser2 · 31/05/2019 18:05

@slithytove I am thinking bright pink perhaps. I do prefer the monochrome hat to be honest.

Bright pink and pink or white shoes will be fab with that hat and dress

Alsohuman · 31/05/2019 18:16

The monochrome hat’s much nicer. Hot pink shoes and lipstick, monochrome bag - if you can find one - perfection.

Ninkaninus · 31/05/2019 18:18

Bright pink and orange go together brilliantly.

Depending on venue white shoes would work too. Or yellow!

Dressing up is such fun isn’t it... 😊😊

Alsohuman · 31/05/2019 18:19

Oh, please not white shoes! No matter what they cost, they always look cheap.

Ninkaninus · 31/05/2019 18:22

Hehe do you know I felt a bit sick even writing that, I’ve never worn white shoes, and I know exactly what you mean. But they are quite current, apparently.

I think I’d probably play it safe on that one if I’m truly honest, and stay well away from white. But I’d definitely try on a pair or two, just to see if my opinion could be changed. 😁

whattheactualfuckery · 31/05/2019 18:28

Of course you can wear black! I wore a black dress last weekend to a wedding, along with 7 other ladies. Nothing wrong with that at all

MrsJamieFraser2 · 31/05/2019 20:17

@whattheactualfuckery Are you sure? I think it would look amazing with the hat and some killer heels.

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 31/05/2019 21:03

It would. Wear it.

whattheactualfuckery · 31/05/2019 21:59

Do it! Killer heels will finish off the look

MrsJamieFraser2 · 31/05/2019 22:04

@whattheactualfuckery Nude or coloured do you think?

And proper FMS killer heels.

whattheactualfuckery · 31/05/2019 22:21

I wore black gladiator style high shoes, so I'd go with black.

DearDeirdre · 31/05/2019 22:38

My MIL wore a black dress, cream jacket and hat like you've linked to our wedding 25 years ago. It did't occur to me to be offended, she looked fabulous, stylish and appropriate.

I've worn monochrome outfits for loads of weddings- I think that's fine so long as you're not wearing a white maxi.
