Does this dress look ok on me? (Pic included)

It's to wear for a wedding. I need it taken in and the skirt taken up a bit. Just worried it looks a bit too little girly/makes my hips look much bigger than they are.

I'm going to have to take it to pieces to make the adjustments so I'm now having cold feet and thinking I should just send it back and go for something a bit more fitted.

I'm early 30s, in case that makes a difference.

It looks great as does the length, really very now. As for feeling like julie andrews swishing around - who doesn’t like to swish and be on trend. Enjoy it before hems rise again Smile

SteelRiver · 01/05/2019 22:49

You look fabulous! You have that hourglass shape many long for. The dress looks in proportion and fits well, and it's very pretty. No need to alter the length, either. Its great as it is.

Enjoy the wedding!

foreverhanging · 01/05/2019 23:14

That looks absolutely beautiful op!

fullprice · 01/05/2019 23:24

Not sure how your hips could look big.
Looks gorgeous

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/05/2019 00:10

Going against the grain a bit but i would return it to be honest OP even thought it does look nice on you as you've pulled it in the photo - if it doesn't fit, unless it was a bargain why fork out the extra to have it altered so much when there is no guarantee it will look how you want. You clearly have a super figure too so there is very little that won't look equally nice and it's the right time of year so there are plenty of wedding guest dresses about.

Even with you holding it tight at the back you can see the incorrect shaping around the bust toward the shoulders where it is too wide and these are difficult to alter well. If it feels big around the hips or dowdy to you in the length and you are aware of that, you aren't likely to feel that good in it on the day, especially in low heels. I also echo the poster that said the mismatching fabric join doesn't do it much favours and IMO cheapens it a bit with that print.

I like the length though- it's a good length for you, but you are on tip toes in the photo ( i think?) so it would need heels to replicate that. When your friend saw it and commented as they did where you stood flat?

SimplyPut · 02/05/2019 00:13

Beautiful. I think the length is perfect !

cakeandchampagne · 02/05/2019 00:16

Beautiful! You’re going to get a lot of compliments.

RavenLG · 02/05/2019 00:16

surely for the cost of having a dress taken up you could find something else? I could maybe understand something more high end but chi chi London isn’t exactly top quality. If you do keep absolutely do not get it taken up, the style is supposed to sit that length, it’ll look clunky and odd shorter.

Miljah · 02/05/2019 00:21

Lovely. And the length is 'classy'.

Hylobates · 02/05/2019 01:03

That dress looks great at the length it is and I have no idea why you think it makes your hips look big! My only criticism would be your foundation - it looks a little too yellow toned.

KittyWindbag · 02/05/2019 05:01

Your friend is wrong about length - midi is ubiquitous and it looks very chic. If you shorten it it would look less chic in my opinion. The point of the dress is that it’s mildly retro. As long as you don’t have Maria von trapp hair, you won’t look mumsy at all.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 02/05/2019 05:10

You can’t see your hips though. I agree go shorter to avoid the frumpy look.

Binkybix · 02/05/2019 07:53

It would look like a toddler’s dress if you went short - it’s too wide to take that I think.

But if it doesn’t fit, in your shoes I’d take it back rather than faff around with alterations. You’ve got a great figure - the shops are your oyster!

Ellapaella · 02/05/2019 11:18

You look absolutely lovely in that dress and don't need to adjust the length at all. Honestly how anyone can look at your photo and find something wrong with it baffles me. It's perfect.

Langrish · 02/05/2019 11:20

Style is lovely. For my taste the huge pattern is a little overwhelming for a slim person, but I’m quite boring. Wouldn’t over-accessorise.

PlinkPlink · 02/05/2019 11:42

You look absolutely stunning!

I agree, pair it with some lovely nude wedges, the length is beautiful and the print is lush. Perfect for a wedding. Very classy I'd say.

If you dont want the hassle of taking it in, couldn't you take it to an alteration shop nearby?

Ninkaninus · 02/05/2019 12:16

I love the dress and I love the length. I don’t think it’s mumsy at all, I think it’s perfect and elegant.

But I’m inclined to agree with others, i think I would return it and get something that actually fits.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/05/2019 12:19

It's lovely but don't alter the length,it's elegant not 'mumsy.'

Trinpy · 02/05/2019 12:46

Thanks everyone.

Tbh I do find it difficult to find clothes that fit as I'm a size 4-6 but with size 8-10 hips and bum, so although it's a faff having to alter it, I feel like I might end up having to do that anyway on a more expensive dress (this was only £30 something in the sale). And I wont be paying for alterations, I'm doing part of it and my DM has kindly offered to do the rest.

My friend who said it was mumsy saw the same photo that's on here.

Re: the length, I might just pin it up, try it on again and see how it looks.

I'm standing on my tip toes in the photo so I can see how it would look like with heels, definitely can't wear this one with flats.

I actually really like the pattern, it's more the shape I'm not convinced on.

Looks lovely, this friend of yours maybe she is jealous!!

NiteFlights · 02/05/2019 13:19

It looks very nice. Don’t alter the length, it’s perfect. If you shorten it, it will stick out more and make your hips look wider (not that they look remotely wide). As you can sew, might it be possible to add a piece of grosgrain ribbon or similar round the waist to disguise the pattern mismatch? (I can’t sew so don’t know).

I would suggest high block heeled sandals with a bit of platform, rather than wedges.

shitpark · 02/05/2019 14:23

You look lovely

CryptoFascist · 02/05/2019 14:24

It is gorgeous and you look fabulous.
