Can i say thank you to the poster who suggested I use jojoba oil to help with sebaceous filaments!?

I started a thread a little while ago complaining about blackheads, turns out they were sebaceous filaments. I had no idea! I was about to start squeezing them..

I also have peri oral dermatitis and was worried about using anything that might cause a flare up. Then someone (can't remember the name from the top of my head) suggested I use an oil cleansing method using jojoba oil.

Well it's been great! Before, every single pore on my nose and chin was grey-black. Now there's patches of totally clear skin on my nose and ones that are left have really faded. I have none on my chin and the few I had on my cheeks have totally vanished too! 😃 hopefully it won't be long until my niae has cleared up too.

Initally I did have a little flare up with my peri oral dermatitis but I put that down to my skin purging itself from all the horrible aqueous cream (that my gp prescribed..) I had been using for years, after around two weeks of that the dermatitis is vanishing too! Annnd the rest of my skin is looking a lot clearer!

So thank you to whoever you were!!

(Sorry to everyone else but I did say I would report back Grin)

So what do you actually do with it, amd what product do you use please?

CraicMammy · 28/04/2019 22:39

Yes, I’d like to know how to use the oil too, I’ve just been prescribed aqueous cream too and am loath to start using it and the ingredients give you spots!

FaithInfinity · 28/04/2019 22:43

Another one who is intrigued but keen because I thought I had blackheads but now I’ve looked it up it’s these!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 28/04/2019 22:44

Same! I thought I had blackheads too but it’s sebaceous filaments!

MimsyBorogroves · 28/04/2019 22:45

Me too!

Drogosnextwife · 28/04/2019 22:47

Ohh! Can you tell us how you use it? My nose and chin are getting worse and worse with these and it really getting a bit embarrassing. I don't know if other people can see but I definitely do.

Newadventure · 28/04/2019 22:48

I use a 100% pure jojoba oil (you can use various different oils but it was the one that was suggested so I just went with that).

I used a little bit of olive oil on some tissue to take off my eye make up first then use a small amount (tea spoon) of jojoba oil to massage into my face for around 1 min, then use a wash cloth soaked in hot water then wringed out (so it's still hot and damp) to gently wipe it away.
Sometimes I'll put the cloth over my face to to open my pores and draw any dirt out but I have sensitive skin so only do this once or twice a week.

After I've done that I'll rinse my face with water and when it's still wet I'll add a little more jojoba oil then pat dry with a towel (I learned this trick when using olive oil as a moisturizer, it leaves enough on your skin for it to be moisturized but not greasy.
I found not doing this and just drying my face after wiping with the cloth made my face feel dry.

I only do the oil cleansing method at night and in the morning all I need to do is splash water on my face to freshen up as it's already clean and I didn't want to risk clogging up my pores.

It's really worked a treat.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 28/04/2019 22:51

Thanks OP!

When you splash your face in the morning, do you need to use a bit of jojoba oil after to moisturise it or is it fine without?

Newadventure · 28/04/2019 22:54

I hope the poster who it was sees this and comes along and tells us the 'science' behind it.

It's something to do with the molecules in the jojoba oil (or other oils) being bigger than the sebaceous oil, so the sebaceous oil clings to it and is removed when you wipe it.
The cloth acts like a really gentle exfoliant too.. which was great for me as I'd been using aqueous cream for two+ years and could never exfoliate so my skin looked so dull.

OP posts:
Newadventure · 28/04/2019 22:57

Mine is fine without, I think because it's been really hydrated during the night so it doesn't need it.

You I could put some on if you needed it but use the method I described (wet face the dab with a towel) otherwise you'll look greasy and if you wear make up it won't go on properly.

OP posts:
Newadventure · 28/04/2019 23:12

Oh and just to add.. I've been doing this for a month now, I think it'll be another month until my skin is totally clear (the sebaceous filaments and dermatitis anyway.. hormonal spots will be another matter Angry) so if you do decide to try it, give it time to work as it's really gentle, but effective!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 28/04/2019 23:28

Thank you!

BruceAndNosh · 29/04/2019 08:26

So you're not using any other products on your face at all apart from jojoba oil?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/04/2019 08:29

Where do you get the jojoba oil? Is it expensive?

ovenchips · 29/04/2019 08:51

@NewAdventure Really interesting. Thanks for sharing. I have just started doing double cleansing in evening - first round with oil. Too early to say yet but if it clears my skin like it has yours I will be delighted!

Newadventure · 29/04/2019 09:08

No bruce. I have peri oral dermatitis so i cant use anything with chemicals in it, i was prescribed an aqueous cream from my gp to use as a face wash which i used for two years. Over time it made my skin look awful and clogged up all my pores. It really didnt do my skin any favours but I also knew I couldn't use anything else (or so I thought..) I would use olive oil as a moisturizer but I didn't know you could wash with oil too.
Obviously oil has no chemicals in it, it's 100% natural. Turns out the aqueous cream has something in it which aggravates peri oral dermatitis so that'll explain why it never really went away.Confused

lady I got mine from Holland and Barrett.
It was supposed to be £20 but was reduced to £9 (Holland and Barrett always have a sale on let's face it)
It's only a smallish bottle but I've been using it for over a month now and I've only used a little bit, I reckon the whole bottle will last around 6 months judging by how much I've used so far.

Also having done a little search, could it be @Tolleshunt who suggested you try jojoba oil?

Newadventure · 29/04/2019 09:17

Fwiw the poster who suggested jojoba oil said she was using grapeseed oil as it's much cheaper as she felt it was a good alternative.
You can use all sorts of oils so just Google "the oil cleansing method" and see which one you think will work best for you within your price range (there's lots of specialist oils that are more expensive too)
You can also mix oils and make your very own special cleanser but it might take a little trial and error to get right.

Newadventure · 29/04/2019 09:18

Yes! That's her! Grin

Yes, it was me. I'm so, so glad it worked for you, Newadventure. Yay!!! It can be so miserable if you have a skin issue.

Thanks for letting me know it worked. I'm a bit of an evangelist for it.
