I've seen speculation to that effect, but have no idea whether it's true.

Even if he did think of it in the past, now there's another George coming along, he might well change his mind.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 23/04/2019 21:18

The monarch chooses their regnal name. Elizabeth chose her own name and that’s all most of us have known, but it isn’t the norm. I could quite see why Prince Charles would want to start his reign with a new name.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 23/04/2019 21:19

That’s a very good point, @AnnaComnena

Notmyrealname855 · 23/04/2019 21:20

Pinkie ... not sure I can get off that website! Been on it for an hour now! There are some celebs who’ve been honest about surgery - Chrissy Teigen listed about 10 procedures people have done that I’d never heard of Shock

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/04/2019 21:23

But it's going to be hard enough for the public to get used to calling him King Charles, let alone King George! It wasn't that common for monarchs to choose different regnal names - Edward VII and George VI were exceptions rather than the norm. Edward VIII was known to family and close friends as David but he was always Prince Edward, unlike George VI who was Prince Albert.

Actually, it is the norm for the monarch to choose their own name. There have only been a few instances in history when another name was chosen.

I think Charles will be Charles III. He has been known by that name for a very long time, and he will have a short reign. Using his own name will help reference his long tenure as Prince of Wales. I think he will want that.

Rhubarbisevil · 23/04/2019 21:28

Maybe Charles will hope to break the curse of the unfortunate Charleses.

SenecaFalls · 23/04/2019 21:30

Edward VII was Prince Albert Edward. It was his parents' intention that he would rule as King Albert Edward; he decided to drop the Albert part, but he did still use a name that he was known by.

Daisypie · 23/04/2019 21:32

I think I read somewhere that Meghan said 'we've been given a list of names to look at'.
I think Elizabeth or Charles.

SenecaFalls · 23/04/2019 21:36

Charles I was most definitely unfortunate, but Charles II, although he had a difficult life as a young man and a rather turbulent reign in many ways, was overall successful, I think.

Considering the limited number of names British monarchs have borne, there are quite a few that are associated with monarchs who had a less-than-stellar experience.

user1457017537 · 23/04/2019 21:40

They have been given a list of names to look at? Who knew you couldn’t even chose your child’s name.

StCharlotte · 23/04/2019 21:43

Wait, what? The Queen Mother was called Angela???

Doesn't Zara mean "Princess"? So she has her title Wink

LoversLane · 23/04/2019 21:49

Nine pages already?! Goodness you guys can talk Grin

I guess my prediction that the baby would share a birthday with Louis was wrong then? Maybe s/he will share with Charlotte instead?

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 23/04/2019 21:53

I agree he is very old to change his name when he becomes king - even if that was to happen now. But I just can't help thinking Charles is a jinxed name for a king.

Charles I was beheaded after the monarchy lost completely, Charles II was banished (although did, many years later regain the throne).

Then of course there was Charles Edward Stuart aka the Bonnie Prince Charlie / The Young Pretender - who tried to regain what he saw as his father's throne but lost at great cost to the Scottish people (and also English soldiers).

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/04/2019 22:00

@StCharlotte No, she was named Elizabeth but Angela was one of her other names.

From Google - In Russian, Zara means princess

So technically yes she was given a princess name whilst not having the title or traditional royal name. That's quite clever really. Grin

Bisset · 23/04/2019 22:03

I always assumed Kate and William loved the name Louis (i.e. it would have been their first choice) but didn’t want to name their first born that, what with French Revolution and Jungle Book connotations. Hence George has it as a middle name, in no expectation of having another son.

When son number 2 came along... bam.

AnnaComnena · 23/04/2019 22:04

But I just can't help thinking Charles is a jinxed name for a king.

As a pp said, Charles II didn't do too badly. His brother, on the other hand....

AnnaComnena · 23/04/2019 22:13

....what with French Revolution and Jungle Book connotations.

But in the royal family, 'Louis' would always be associated with Philip's uncle, Charles's great uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, and Philip's grandfather, Prince Louis of Battenberg. I doubt if any other connotations would enter their heads.

BertrandRussell · 23/04/2019 22:13

Elizabeth Angela Margurite.

Why do I know that?????

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 23/04/2019 22:23

As a pp said, Charles II didn't do too badly. His brother, on the other hand...*

But he was still defeated by Cromwell and exiled for 9 years from Scottish throne and 11 from English (came back 2 years after Cromwell died). I know he then had a fairly successful reign after but still. King Charles spells defeat too often for my liking.

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 23/04/2019 22:26

Is the Duchess of Cambridge due to go anywhere? Any of the other royals? Other than the Easter service we've had a distinct lack of dresses to discuss.

Haworthia · 23/04/2019 22:36

I feel quite convinced that Baby Sussex will have a more unusual name. Hope so anyway - it’s not as if H&M are obligated to use classic Royal names like W&K.

Louis is totally Middleton. Kate must be relieved to have at least one that looks like her!

hotcrossbun4321 · 23/04/2019 22:46

I have money on Lady/Princess Caroline. Classy but not stuffy, royal, and we know Meghan is a fan of Carolyn Bassette-Kennedy!

I'm hoping for pics soon - I think it will be black and white, white shirts/cashmere

SenecaFalls · 23/04/2019 22:49

Also Caroline is the feminine form of Charles.
