Does this dress make me look 'a bit nineteenth century'?

I need a dress for a wedding next month. I tried this one on (in M&S) and really liked the colour and the flouncy way it twirls when I do (I might be five). Both my DM and DH hated it, which surprised me as they both normally at least claim to like most things I buy - DM said it looked 'weirdly covered up' and unflattering, while DH said it looked 'a bit nineteenth century' and then that there was 'something a bit Pennsylvania Dutch about it' (?!). I thought it was elegant but am now doubting myself! Thoughts, oh wise mumsnetters?

I'm 31, 5'10 and the dress pictured is a 12 (in M&S generous sizing). I'd quite like to look nice for this wedding as it'll be the first time I've seen lots of the people there in years, but I'm still feeling a bit body unconfident after having DS nine months ago (don't think I'll lose any more weight before this wedding, though - seem to have plateaued)

I love the star print Temperley dress but also think your original dress works really well on you. You know the vibe you are going for and I think it works, with a killer statement necklace.

I think it makes you look much less tall/slim than a 5'10 size 12!

Love the Temperley black star one.

But I really love your original one too - although I think it’s maybe not quite smart enough.

I know what people are saying about Mint Velvet BUT did you see the red one from there someone posted, OP? It was gorgeous! Quite similar to your original and even more Vampire Wife in style.

Ah yes just scrolled back and saw you saw it and liked it. It’s the one posted by Fireman King

Good sleeve detail. I think it’s worth a try on OP.

Yes, I agree that Mint Velvet one looks to be worth a shot.

Ah, had forgotten about that one - agree it's worth a shot, and also the temperley. My only concern about the mint velvet one is it looks quite wintery? I know so does my original choice in the pics, but the fabric is very light so it's not so much so in person.

Think DH is getting a bit alarmed by all this dress ordering - I have form for being, erm, lax about returning unwanted online purchases...

NewAccount The Mint Velvet one is crepe. I think it could be made to look wintery, and equally, it could not. Let's call it a mid-season dress. And It's twirly! I have a good feeling about it ... Also the Temperley which I love.

Tell DH the dress ordering is his fault because, as he rightly pointed out, your original dress is a bit nineteenth century and therefore totally inappropriate. Wink

Another vote for the Mint Velvet! It's very similar to your original in colour and style, the sleeve details are lovely and I think the fabric would look more expensive than the M&S.

Disclaimer: I'm late 30s and have never bought anything from MV. So I'm not one of those Boden/ MV fans Grin

I really hope it fits if you do end up ordering it.

The Temperley has a lovely cut but personally I think it's too dark for a wedding, though yes, red shoes would significantly dress it up.

I like the floral Temperley! And it's on sale...
I TOTALLY agree about the sleevless shift with a wrap look. I think it's just so ubiquitous.

You just have to be organised - write a list, take them all to the PO together and tick them off.

This website has lots of midi/longer lengths with sleeve options.

I feel your pain. I'm going to three weddings this year and hate those fussy wedding guest type dresses. At least my friends are averaged sized though!

After much searching online I echo a previous poster's suggestion to look at Wolf & Badger. A few things on there which are simple and stylish without being too Amish. Some of it is really £££ but not all. I like this www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/stine-plum-midi-dress/

This thread is quite funny to come back to. A lot veh stylish people telling everyone how common boden and mv are. I would love to see their amazing outfits on the what am I wearing today thread Grin

The red button sleeve MV dress is still the best of the dresses posted imo.

I like the original one you had. That Temperley one is nice, but I think the first one is good. I really like the long sleeves much more than 3/4 length sleeves - they're much more modern and 'now'. Completely agree with not getting a tight, sleeveless MOB type outfit.

You look fantastic in it. The colour is gorgeous and I love the sleeves. You need a wee heel and a gorgeous floaty scarf like white with navy and poppies to finish it off.

Op. I am a fat 50plus year old.who loves being overdressed and would wear most of the dresses linked to, they are not right for you.
I know people have said MV is not an edgy brand but I think the red one linked to earlier would be the sort of thing that might work on you. Why not order it to try? ( Not sure if it is possible timewise). The most recent one you posted does not work.on you I think
The one posted by Ellllle is really beautiful
