Jumpsuits - why do they do this?!?

MargotMoon · 14/04/2019 18:20

I am baffled by clothes designers sometimes. I've just tried on 3 jump suits from New Look (ordered online) and all have their zip down the back from neck to waist. I couldn't do up or undo any of them without DD's assistance. She doesn't live with me all the time so I am sending them all back which I am gutted about as I loved one of them in particular.

How the fuck is a single woman supposed to manage zips when they don't have someone else in the house?!!

Actually, scrap that, how is ANY woman supposed to wear one without having to ask someone else to help her undress every time she needs to go to the toilet??!!! Angry

It's a fair and valid point

and yes it's fucking stupid

they put the zip like that because of how it looks, womens clothes practicality is secondary

PeachNut · 14/04/2019 18:27

If it has a zip with a hole in the pull, you can tie a ribbon so you reach it from the back....

MenuPlant · 14/04/2019 18:31

how do you get the ribbon off after?

Do you tie it back on to do yourself up after a wee?

or do you leave it on?

i'd be worried about some hilarious drunken man pulling the ribbon!

MenuPlant · 14/04/2019 18:31

or sittin on it when I stood up even :D

MenuPlant · 14/04/2019 18:32

gettin g it caught rather i mean

GregoryPeckingDuck · 14/04/2019 18:33

You thread the ribbon through and hold onto both ends pretty obvious. Even then I don’t understand why you would need to. Are you seriously saying you can’t undo a zip down your back by yourself?

PinkOboe · 14/04/2019 18:36

There’s a knack. Go underarm as far up from the bottom as you can pulling down on the jumpsuit with the other hand. . Then pull the whole thing up from the neck (giving yourself a massive wedgie) with one hand whilst reaching down to grab the zip with the other

MenuPlant · 14/04/2019 18:37

I can't all the way no, I can't reach the top if it's high. Or at least I can reach to touch it but not pull it IYSWIM

I don't buy clothes with that sort of zip often for that reason! And have only dresses in that style.

So you take the ribbon out with you and thread it through every time you need a wee and need to get done up again?

Sounds like a palaver.

i agree with OP.

PeachNut · 14/04/2019 18:39

No you leave the ribbon on!

PeachNut · 14/04/2019 18:40

Like this!

PeachNut · 14/04/2019 18:41

Did that not load?

MenuPlant · 14/04/2019 18:50

Good tip PeachNut!

That makes sense now I've seen the pic!

Still agree with Op though :D

Some zips come with a pull bit on already don't they.

bingohandjob · 14/04/2019 18:55

I've got a fabulous jumpsuit which I've never worn for this very reason. I basically left it too long to return for a refund before you ask. It's got a tiny zip tag - the kind without a hole so can't do the ribbon trick. I mean how the feck are you supposed to do it up unless you've got arms like Mr Tickle?

GraceMarks · 14/04/2019 19:28

Gregory some people don't have the flexibility in their joints. I can manage it but only because I have extreme hypermobility and can practically dislocate my shoulders and elbows!

MargotMoon · 14/04/2019 20:07

@bingohandjob Yes, the one I got has that kind of zip - tiny, pointed, no hole, difficult to grip.

I usually do manage zips like this (just about) but this was just really hard work and I don't want to piss myself wearing a bright orange jumpsuit on a night out (at least not before I've had a few shots anyway) so back it goes. If it had a side zip I'd have bought two!

bingohandjob is awesome name :D

Fruityb · 14/04/2019 20:10

I had one that expected me to climb in through the neck hole....

Cocolapew · 14/04/2019 20:13

I had a dress with a zip I couldn't reach, I hooked a clothes hanger through it and managed to get it up that way.

I saw a tip on the internet once that suggested dental floss. Not left in obvs

OublietteBravo · 14/04/2019 21:47

I’ve got a fabulous jumpsuit from Boden. It has buttons on the front and is very easy to get in and out of. Much more sensible than the zip-up-the-back design.

Jumpsuits - why do they do this?!?
VanGoghsDog · 14/04/2019 21:50

I have sent back no end of dresses I loved but could not do up and it wasn't clear on the details that they had a back zip.

I can't do them at all. So I simply never buy dresses or anything with back zips.

Some do have holes you can thread something through but many don't. And you need to have a piece of pretty and non clashing narrow ribbon lying around, which I do not.

I've seen some now come with long ribbon on the zip, which is an improvement.

MargotMoon · 14/04/2019 22:02

@MenuPlant Secret gig name for REM, I believe!

@Sarahjconnor That is great

I'm on a quest for a jumpsuit, love that Boden one @OublietteBravo but their stuff is out of my price range.
