Anyone ever put a leather jacket in the washing machine???

Ive bought a beautiful leather jacket on ebay but it stinks to high heaven. Its musty and filthy both inside on the lining and the leather its self.
Have any of you ever dared to put a leather jacket in the wash? The thought of wearing this even after a good damp sponge wipe down and airing is repulsive still.
It was a bargain so if it might be sucessful I might consider the risk.
Specialist cleaning seems to be more than double the price I paid for it therefore not really an option.

I've not washed a leather jacket but I have washed leather sofa cushions after my cat urinated on them. They came out fine although a little rough so needed a leather restorer rubbed in but now as good as new.

How about Febreze? DS bought something from eBay that smelled funky and sprayed it with Febreze. He said it was magic, and vowed never to shower or wash his clothes again, and just to febreze himself and his clothes Grin

My daughter put a leather skirt into the wash the other day. I was horrified! It was quite stiff when it came out, particularly around the waistband where it was double thickness. I wouldn't risk it with a jacket.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/04/2019 16:54

Febreze?! No no no no!!

Can’t you take it to a dry cleaner and get them to sort it out?

Atalune · 11/04/2019 16:54

I think you run the risk of warping the seams/linings/joins.

However I would be tempered to bung it on a delicate wash at 30 degrees with some non bio and take the risk!

ilovecherries · 11/04/2019 16:57

I’ve washed a leather bag. It took a bit of work afterto get it back to condition, but it was fine. I bought proper leather soap and conditioner from a Sadler.

MiniDoofa · 11/04/2019 17:00

I’ve got a 15 year old leather handbag which I wash in the sink with laundry detergent about once a year. Comes up fine😀 I’d be more concerned about using the washer in case the movement would damage jacket. Could you hand wash and drip dry?

Perfectmummy1234 · 11/04/2019 17:00

What a dilema! It smells far too bad to spray to mask the wiff. I really dont want it touching my skin either due to the filth.
Sorry Im a bit of a clean freak which isnt helping!

Dry cleaner will sort it

Or leather cleaner and sponge/febreeze the lining 🤔

Notcontent · 11/04/2019 17:02

How about washing it by hand in some warm water with mild detergent? Do it in the bath?

bingohandjob · 11/04/2019 17:04

Personally, I'd take it to be professionally cleaned. The thought of leather going in the washing machine just made me clench with anxiety! Blush

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 11/04/2019 17:05

i saw something on line about washing leather jackets...the gist was do it, it's finnnnnnnne!

I almost did, as I got a totally bargainaceous real actual biker jacket for dd in a charity shop that smelled like it had lived in a musty pond, but a week of airing it in the depths of winter/frost and bright sunshine meant I didn't have to

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 11/04/2019 17:08

here's the article

Have also washed leather sofa cushions and they have been fine....I didn't tumble dry them though ...I do think that may be a step too far!

fluffiphlox · 11/04/2019 17:13

Have it dry cleaned. Could you get someone to replace the lining?

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2019 17:13

Can you sponge it down with leather cleaner? I have machine washed a leather bagvon a quick wash it came out fine a jacket i would panic about

NotFatTransslender · 11/04/2019 17:14

I’d maybe try cleaning the outside with leather cleaner or damp sponge etc and then when it’s dry turn inside out and gently hand wash the lining rather than soak it all the way through. I’m sure that will help prevent it going crunchy.

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2019 17:17

I mis read you are bothered about the lining take it to the dry cleaners cost under a tenner

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/04/2019 17:17

I put leather bags in.
I'd put it on the most gentle cycle, then hang it on the line.

ononie · 11/04/2019 17:43

I did, a washed leather jacket from boden that I bought on ebay. STANK,
of stale sweat and knew I would never wear it so shoved it in the washer with UGG teatree washing liquid and it came out good as new!

Floisme · 11/04/2019 19:57

My husband did. He'd bought it second hand for about £30 so decided he had nothing much to lose. When it first came out of the machine I feared the worst but it dried absolutely fine.

OldJoseph · 11/04/2019 20:14

Sorry to derail....
I'd like to put our leather sofa covers in the machine, if you're some one who did this did you use say Stergene on a wool cycle, or something else? I'd dubbin afterwards.
Also leather coats, shoes and sofa covers should be OK getting wet shouldn't they? They are made from a substance (cow hide) that protects animals, plus shoes and coats have to survive the rain and snow. Is it the detergent that's the problem?

TheMarbleFaun · 11/04/2019 20:16

Perfectmummy do it!
(Please come back & let us know how it worked out)

Perfectmummy1234 · 11/04/2019 21:27

you lot are egging me on !
I'm going for it.
Keep you posted!
