Why should she renounce her citizenship? It's possible to be royal and a dual citizen - Maxima is.

Anne I totally agree.

Every year there is a big song and dance about the Queen taking a train to Scotland. Or that she eats a very simple breakfast. But that is news because it makes people think ‘she is like one of us’. They don’t like anything like us and it annoyed me so much when they went to the Grendel Towers and were then driven back to palaces. PALACES in this day and age.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 11:17

Despite being the OP of these threads, I'm a republican at heart and would be happy for the lot of them to go. Not French Revolution style of course, but for them to make livings out of their own talents rather than being subsidised by the state. God knows it'll be generations before their money runs out!

But I can't single out H&M for criticism when they're just spending, while talking about charity in the next breath, like countless other royals have done for years. They ALL need to stop with that!

@SlipperOrchid I find all that "ooh look, she's just like us" stuff so cringeworthy. Yes, the Queen might keep her cereal in Tupperware but she keeps it in Tupperware in a massive dining room in a big bloody palace!!!

Exactly Queen. Those criticising Meghan are happy for the others to live a far more extravagant lifestyle because they supposedly ‘hide’ it more. That means spending the money isn’t the issue at all. The issue is their irrational dislike of Meghan. Such hypocrisy!

BlingLoving · 05/04/2019 11:32

But they haven't. Most of their money has been amassed in the last 150 years. not sure I fully understand this but it doesn't matter. You think we're all paying for them, and I don't.

SenecaFalls · 05/04/2019 11:40

The main reason Meghan, and other US citizens living abroad, might consider renouncing citizenship is to avoid US taxation. But it's not considered to be a good idea if it would render a person stateless, as would be the case if Meghan did it now. I have a feeling that she won't do it even after she becomes a British citizen. I think she would want to keep her options open, plus it can be a highly emotional issue. Likely, she will have dual citizenship.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 11:52

And I imagine Meghan will hire the best accountants in the business!

Am sure others will correct me, if need be, but I thought if you were born American, you couldn't become a citizen of another country without giving up your US citizenship. I.e, I thought dual citizenship was not available to US-born citizens 🤔

Quintella · 05/04/2019 12:10

US born Boris Johnson only renounced his American citizenship in the last year or so.

SenecaFalls · 05/04/2019 12:16

US born citizens can have dual citizenship.

CoverYourEarsTeam · 05/04/2019 12:41

Ah OK... Thank you :)

Maybe it is the other way around: that if you are not US born and you take up US citizenship, that you must renounce whatever else you have? I.e, to become a US citizen, you must give up being Nigerian/Hungarian/Italian whatever else.
(Sorry... Not wanting to hijack. But am thinking of some folk who have gone that way. E.g Rupert Murdoch ... who was Aus born but has been a US citizen since the 80s, and is no longer Australian.) thank the lord

Inniu · 05/04/2019 12:45

You don’t have to renounce other citizenship to become American either

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 12:50

Apparently Maxima is a Dutch and Argentinian citizen but CP Mary renounced her Australian/British citizenship to become Danish. Maybe the law is different in Denmark. Triple citizenship would be useful though!

SenecaFalls · 05/04/2019 12:50

There is renunciation language in the oath that a naturalized citizen takes, but if the other country still recognizes that person's citizenship, they have dual nationality. For example, quite a few British actors have become naturalized US citizens, but they have retained their British citizenship as well.

Baby Sussex will be born a dual citizen. And his or her US citizenship is a personal right. Generally, parents cannot renounce US citizenship on behalf of minors.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/04/2019 12:59

I totally agree that this is not a Meghan issue, it is a Royal Family issue. Meghan is just in the spotlight at the minute and is far enough away from the direct line for people to question it. "Why is this newbie splashing the cash?"

If I were Meghan I would never give up my citizenship.

queenofarles · 05/04/2019 13:16

enough away from the direct line for people to question it. "Why is this newbie splashing the cash?" exactly this
If Harry was married to someone else , and they were spending as much as Meghan does on clothes , we will still be making these arguments too.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/04/2019 13:20

Obviously they won't be going anywhere while the Queen is alive, but I would not be at all surprised to see them settle abroad.

Except they'd both need "proper" jobs then as they wouldn't be fulfilling any royal roles. Or they'd risk being viewed as a royal white elephant like Andrew.

Quintella · 05/04/2019 13:29

But their 'proper jobs' could be something along the lines of being ambassadors or spokespeople for some high end brands or organisations. Lot of dosh for not a whole lot of work. I'd imagine they could make a lot of $$$$ Stateside.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/04/2019 13:36

I think it will all hinge on Charles' lifespan. His parents have lived to a ripe old age and he may do too, but he's 70 already, so even if he became king tomorrow he's got a max of 15 years on the throne. By the time a William takes over George will be in his 20s with Charlotte and Louis already teens. In ten years' time M&H could easily move abroad.

Hazeintheclouds · 05/04/2019 13:39

If Prince Charles lives to be over 90, what then?Confused
Why the idea of 15 years on the throne, in other words? His mother is still monarch despite her great age.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 13:39

They won't be going anywhere while the Queen is still alive but they're even less likely to go anywhere when she's dead! Harry will be the son of the king then and will probably have to take on more responsibilities. I can see them fading away eventually (so to speak) but not until William becomes King or the Cambridge children are old enough to take on royal duties, whichever comes first.

SlipperOrchid · 05/04/2019 13:40

If they were spending as much as Meghan.

The point is they all DO spend this and lots more! How many houses do they have with millions of pounds spent on kitchens and overall renovations? Luxury holidays, private jets, cars, jewels.

Meghan is probably being the most honest of them all.

The questions that are being asked about Meghan should be addressed to all of them!!!!

Charles telling Meghan not to wear a tiara because ‘it could be seen as extravagant’ says it all. They are dishonest.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 13:42

Charles telling Meghan not to wear a tiara because ‘it could be seen as extravagant’ says it all.

And this from a man whose bespoke suits and shirts cost at least £1k a pop Grin

He is the monarch’s son.
