Help me spend £1k on 2 bags...

WinkysTeatowel · 14/03/2019 14:34

I am in the fortunate position of having £1000 to spend, I have decided that I would like to get two bags, one day, one evening but which and what is another issue.

I like hobo style bags but think that I probably want something more structured so it will last better. I don't want a tote or grab bag (have already/not keen) and would prefer shoulder, maybe cross body.

I'm off to Bicester soon and hoping to maybe get one of them there. So far, after a lot of consideration I have the following options...

  1. Mulberry Amberley satchel & Ginger and Brown clutch
  2. Coach Sutton Hobo & Mulberry clutch (Amberley maybe)

What would you do, any other suggestions (not a Bayswater)?

Re colours, evening bag probably in black, day not black or tan, maybe oxblood or brown...

Sorry it's long, I wanted to give all the info!
TIA

Join the mulberry and Coach Facebook groups - you'll get great advice about how each bag wears etc
There are also some excellent Preloved bags for sale on the groups

The older Mulberry bags are better made apparently. The Antony comes in different sizes so might be worth looking into

Coach is designed now by an old Mulnerry designer so they have become very popular.

I'm on a lot a few groups and many people have sold their newer mulberry bags and bought Coach

I think part of my issue is that I really do want something 'special', the money is for the equivalent of DH's fancy watch. I've already had the money sitting in an account for a year, I need to spend it!
I know I said no Bayswater's but there is a very nice Midnight blue double zipped one on BrandAlley that is tempting me...

That’s a nice bag winky but very different to what you said you are looking for.

You’ve got me looking at Mulberry on BA now! Very tempted by the Tessie satchel in oxblood Shock

twosoups1972 · 16/03/2019 15:02

Has anyone bought from BA before? Is it easy to return things?

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 15:03

Don't like that gingerandbrown clutch at all.
Love the Coach hobo.

smileannie · 16/03/2019 16:57

Wait a while until the Mulberry sale. They reduce price by hundreds of pounds.

LizzieMacQueen · 16/03/2019 17:02

Have you had a look at Smythson? They have some lovely expensive bags.

catinboots99 · 16/03/2019 17:05

Wow a bag thread that hasn't turned nasty yet. I'm sure the idiots will turn up soon.

OP I am very envious and really enjoying googling some of these beautiful bags.

LovingLola · 16/03/2019 17:07

I have a Coach prairie satchel in a pink shade. I love it !

WinkysTeatowel · 16/03/2019 17:11

Thanks again for everyone's input. It's really helped me make some decisions... I'm definitely going for a Mulberry day bag, I couldn't find one I liked at Bicester but have ruled some out, I think I'm going to keep looking and wait for a sale, the Amberley is definitely my favourite but I don't think I can bring myself to spend £950 on it!

In other news and inspired by DeRigueurMortis comments about colour (I do love a bright bag, I wear a lot of navy and grey so it's nice to have something to brighten it up) I did find and treated myself to this Coach Hobo in Strawberry which I love and with 40% off, there's still plenty in the pot for the right Mulberry when it comes up.

I have a Coach Turn lock hobo and love it. It's a couple of years old and has worn really well.

I really like carloe handbags and would get one if I had the funds. It's a fairly new brand, based and made in a small batches in London.

DeRigueurMortis · 16/03/2019 17:33

That's lovely OP.

Really nice colour :-)

Lucked · 16/03/2019 18:19

I have a mulberry hobo which is in excess of 10 years old, I am completely careless with it and it looks great. However with the price of mulberry theses days (depressing)you won’t get two bags.

Lucked · 16/03/2019 18:21

Band alley have sub £500 mulberry at the moment

Loopytiles · 16/03/2019 18:23

Like the Coach one you bought. In your situation I’d buy a second “day” bag: evening ones are less used and easy to pick up a nice evening one for low cost.

PH03b3 · 16/03/2019 23:03

@WinkysTeatowel
Well i do love that coach handbag where is it from please!?

WinkysTeatowel · 17/03/2019 03:04

@PH03b3 thanks, they had lots of different colours but I really liked that one. It was the Coach outlet in Bicester.

I’ve got the Amberley in Oxblood as well, my first and only expensive bag bought for a big birthday last year. Still absolutely love it, seems to go with everything but still be a bit different. My style is a bit quirky I think, so it suits me very well.

twosoups1972 · 17/03/2019 11:10

meandyou how spacious is the Amberley? What can you fit in it?

blacquejacqueshellacque · 17/03/2019 12:48

Can j just throw my 2 penneth worth in....

Buy a classic mulberry - not a new shape.

Bayswater / the old ones were really heavy but I think they've made them lighter

I spent 900 on a Bayswater satchel 2 years ago and although they have discontinued it and put it in sale (only £200 off) it still looks classic as it is the Bayswater style.

On the other hand I bought a £700 small bag last year that went half price in the sale and looks.....last year - IYKWIM?

Ninkaninus · 17/03/2019 13:19

If it were me I’d get the Aspinal Mayfair midi in green, and the Mulberry Amberley satchel (can’t remember what its exact style name is) either in Rosewater or in a classic red. Or a Darley In one of their more interesting colourways.

Since you have already picked one bag, I’d suggest you could have a look here:

www.aspinaloflondon.com/products/midi-mayfair-bag-in-evergreen-patent-croc

to find a preloved but excellent condition Mulberry at a very good price. Or wait til the sales if you prefer to get it new. There will be sale in June so it’s not too long to wait.

Meandyouandyouandme · 17/03/2019 14:30

twosoups1972 I’ve got the one that retails at £1095, I tried the smaller one as well. I put my stuff in the one I bought in the shop, as I couldn’t decide, it’s fairly roomy, can fit purse, water, umbrella, phone etc in easily, plus room to spare. The strap was slightly longer on the bigger one, and I’m quite tall so that was better. I use it everyday, and it’s lovely Smile

Ninkaninus · 17/03/2019 15:08

Oh just realised I posted the wrong link in my last comment!

Was supposed to be this one:

www.npnbags.co.uk

WinkysTeatowel · 17/03/2019 16:01

Thanks Nink I'll keep an eye on that site, I hadn't seen the Rosewater colour, I love it! I'm worried about getting a pale one and it getting dirty though.

BlacqueJacque I think you're right about a classic, I don't want to spend all that money and then feel it was wasted. I think the problem is I haven't found one that calls to me yet, will keep searching until I find the right one. There been loads of interesting other brands mentioned here too that I'm going to keep any eye on.

I think a trip to Cheshire Oaks may be on the cards....

OP posts:
blacquejacqueshellacque · 17/03/2019 16:22

The thing is that if you're going to these outlet villages you're not likely to get a classic.

I think you need to go to a mulberry store or dept store with a big concession and have a look, feel and try on (I know this sounds mad Smile).

This is a huge amount of money to
Spend on a bag so I wouldn't go for a new or seasonal colour. Black, oak or the gorgeous oxblood.

They've done the Lily for a while so that's a classic as is the Bayswater. The Darley small satchel is lovely but tiny.
