Pixie cut? Be honest!

Hello everybody,

I'm considering a pixie cut, but really really don't want to regret it. My hair is thick and curly (I straighten after every wash). I considering this one specifically:

I have scribbled over my eyes for some vague attempt at anonymity, and also my 10 month old is going through the mother of all sleep regressions, so I have the worst dark circles ever.

What do you think? Go for the chop, stay as I am or maybe something I haven't thought of?

Thanks in advance xx

firesong not forewing wtf autocorrect!

Embarrassingstoryteller · 26/02/2019 00:26

I think with your shaped face and hair type it could really work, so go for it!!

PCohle · 26/02/2019 01:05

Ooh I wouldn't to be honest.

I think they look a bit ageing. So often they come across more like a sensible mumsy style rather than the Michelle Williams vibe.

You also have to go to the hairdresser every 10 minutes.

CountFosco · 26/02/2019 17:39

Coach's hair looks how my SIL's hair looks when short (on both sides, I'm surrounded by family members with great hair). I love short dark curly hair on women. Sadly mine is dark blond and straight (still rock a pixie though).

CountFosco · 26/02/2019 17:40

OrigamiZoo I love Olivia Colman's hair.

PCohle · 26/02/2019 17:46

I thought I liked Olivia Coleman's hair short until I saw how lovely she looks with it long tbh.

I wouldn't either ! I had mine cut into an alleged pixie last year and am currently growing it out. My hair was in a dreadful condition so it wasn't something I would necessarily have done of my own volition. It was nice after the first cut but never really after successive ones, just ended up looking a bit frumpy and dull even though I tried to style it nicely.

BusterGonad · 27/02/2019 03:59

I like pixie cuts, but if you are anything less than slim, attractive/unusual looking and feminine then it just won't work, when I was 3 stone lighter and 15 years younger I looked great with one, now I'm middle aged and my jaw line isn't what it once was I think I'll end up looking like a dinner lady.
Not to be rude but I also think you need to thin your hair less and maybe let some curl into your life!

GinaCarbonara · 27/02/2019 04:20

My friend has just cut hers into a pixie with an undercut on one side, but still with length on top. Her hair is incredibly thick and curly and it looks AMAZING, she doesn't have to do much with it during the day as the curls give it natural volume, she just has to go quite regularly to get it trimmed.

Ellapaella · 27/02/2019 08:07

Coach you look amazing with that hair cut but you have amazing bone structure which is perfect for it. I think you are the exception rather than the rule though, a pixie cut is not for most people imo. I had my hair cut short once, worst thing I ever did. I have a natural wave and thick hair, it was a total nightmare to style every day.

Thatsalovelycuppatea · 27/02/2019 10:58

Your face shape will definitely suit it. I've recently gone shorter. I didn't think I'd like it but lots have said it looks nice.

ChilliMum · 27/02/2019 11:13

I guess it depends how well your hair holds when straightened.

I have wavy hair and I had a fringe cut in once - seduced by lovely sleek fringes in the hairdressers magazine.

I spent a week battling my natural curl, straighteners every morning with a shopping trolley of product which would look great when i left the house but could only be described as an 80s flick by the time i got to work Grin

I need the length to hold the style if it is straight. A tearful phone call to my hairdresser confirmed my worse fears that there is nothing to be done but hair grips / alice bands or a retro 80s do till it grew out. Was more than 10 years ago but I still remember the shame.

I LOVE a pixie, I've just had mine cut back into one last Friday from a bob.

When I had my first pixie I started with hair past my shoulders and gradually went shorter and shorter until I went from chin length to pixie.

I love my hair on the first day, then for a few days I get frustrated as I'm figuring out my style but after that it's the best.

My hair is SO CURLY but always sits better in a pixie, stays where I want and doesn't end up super frizzy. Have my neck free of hair is bliss.

April241 · 27/02/2019 12:13

Oh also, there's so many variations of pixies and sometimes it's a while until you find one you like. My first was like Frankie (The Saturdays) so longer at the front and this time is more Ginnifer Goodwin which I prefer.

I've gone from 35 minutes styling in the morning to 7, it works for me as I'm full time at work and with 2 toddlers I didn't have time to spend with my hair. I don't like it long as when it's bob length it's a lot of upkeep and then when it's long enough to tie back that's all I do.

I spend months, probably years actually contemplating my first pixie and was proper scared when I cut it the first time, love it though. I've had friends who've had pixies and they've instantly regretted it and just grew it back out.

shrumps · 27/02/2019 16:40

100% do it. I've had one for about 4 years now. Beware tho - it's low on maintenance re daily washing and drying but you do have to get it cut every 6 weeks max.

Cocolepew · 27/02/2019 17:00

I don't understand why on pixie cut threads there's loads of suggestions to get a bob instead because not everyone suits a short cut. Not everyone suits bobs either Hmm
I have chubby face and have had a very short haircut for years.
Quite frankly I'm gorgeous 😊.
But then again I'm an old hag of 50 so there's probably no hope left for me now.

Cocolepew · 27/02/2019 17:02

Oh and I've let it go grey before as well

April241 · 27/02/2019 17:09

Coco hope you've left it grey, it's gorgeous!!

Cocolepew · 27/02/2019 17:18

Unfortunately not Sad
I'm in the process of growing my dye out ^again>.
Thanks though Smile

Dowser · 27/02/2019 20:28

I allowed my hairdresser to cut my hair into a pixie just after the birth of my second child
I started growing it from that moment
Eventhough I was 27 with good cheek bones and slim..I just saw boy looking back at me.
I will never go that short again...unless I’m in a care home and the only alternative is the permed grey mullet

NotMeNoNo · 27/02/2019 20:44

Rosa Salazar in the Scorch trials convinced me to go for the chop. And Judi Dench kind of convinced me it could work at any age. The only way to really know is to give it a try.

I'm also sat on the platinum/silver pixie bench. I say do it.

I have a very similar face shape to you - mines been short/mid/long since i was 17 and now short again (42) it's awesome. I get loads of compliments on it.

Yes you have to 'do' it every day. I blowdry and straighten mine. Takes about 5 mins. Bit of wax, push it about a bit, spray, done.

My advice - find a really good hairdresser. They need to be skilled at womens' short hair or by week 4 it will look shit.

April241 · 27/02/2019 22:34

Oh defo agree on the good hairdresser, has take me absolutely years to find someone who I really really like.
