Pixie cut? Be honest!

Hello everybody,

I'm considering a pixie cut, but really really don't want to regret it. My hair is thick and curly (I straighten after every wash). I considering this one specifically:

goo.gl/images/TzhQAf

I have scribbled over my eyes for some vague attempt at anonymity, and also my 10 month old is going through the mother of all sleep regressions, so I have the worst dark circles ever.

What do you think? Go for the chop, stay as I am or maybe something I haven't thought of?

Thanks in advance xx

If you google Sienna Miller Pixie I think that style would suit you it’s softer and the short bits are long enough to be straightened with small straighteners if need be.

ClockWatchingLady · 24/02/2019 16:04

From your picture, I can see it really suiting you.

However... as someone who's had a lot of different hair lengths, including pixies, I would say that high maintenance hair and sleep-regressing-10-month-olds and high maintenance hair do not go well. And pixies are VERY high maintenance. As stated above, they tend to require a lot of effort with make-up and clothes as well as all the regular hair cuts to look stylish.

Having said that - it's just hair, and if you'd enjoy the change, go for it

Elephantina · 24/02/2019 16:12

OP I have thick curly hair and wore mine in a pixie for years - but, between ages 17 - 28 and when I was 4 stone lighter!

The shortest parts weren't a problem, it was the longer bits on the top that curled and frizzed in all the wrong places. I looked rather like Elvis at times.

Now I have thick, long, lions mane of frizz, and kid myself that it balances out my fat face and frame. You have a beautiful jaw line, you might suit a longer bob? There are so many products out there now for smoothing curly hair if that's what you need.

Personally I steer well clear of layers and thinning, it makes my hair kick out haphazardly.

sadiebelle1 · 24/02/2019 19:56

Do it 😊. I love my pixie cut. I feel so much more confident and sexy with shorter hair. Get an excellent hairdresser though. And your hair can be thinned out easily. I love a pixie with a wave in but my hair is to straight. I think you would look fabulous. Embrace your beauty and show that gorgeous face to the world 😃😃 x

dontticklethetoad · 24/02/2019 20:03

I basically kept shouting MORE...MORE until I had about four hairs left Grin

Now, I am not in touch with what's fashionable but how about a short asymmetric bob?

Please don’t. It doesn’t suit the majority of women.

lotusbell · 24/02/2019 20:13

Sounds just like my hair, OP. I wouldn't bother, I think it'll be a nightmare to control. I'd live to have long hair but it's never grown past my shoulders and takes about 20 minutes to wash. It looks so much healthier in a bob, with plenty of bulk thinned out. When I was 15 I warily asked my hairdresser if she could cut my hair like Meh Ryan, despite my coarse, wiry, wavy bush. She assured me it'd be ok and workable. It wasn't. My best friend still takes the piss out of me 25 years later.

CountFosco · 24/02/2019 23:27

I think it's very hard to tell what your hair might be like when you've thinned and straightened and dyed all life out of it. You do have a lovely face shape and I think if you embraced your natural hair and found a hairdresser who knows how to cut curly hair you could look fantastic. I have a friend with curly hair who has it in a short pixie and it looks fab (and so much better than when she had it long when the curl fell out).

I'd say you need to ask any friends with nice curly hair where they get it cut and then go to that hairdresser and talk to them about what will suit you and your hair. I suspect you won't be able to get a heavy fringe like in the linked photo, for that you need thick slightly wavy hair that grows forward.

FWIW I think a pixie is very easy to look after. It does need regular cuts but mine is very much wash and go in the morning. And the condition is fab.

Wakk · 24/02/2019 23:39

It really depends how curly you are.

yakari · 24/02/2019 23:59

I have a pixie cut and love it. I think the trick is to go all in - so either really short, or big difference in length between undercut and top, or lots of colour. Just a short cut with no colour or a few highlights can look boring/aging.

I love it, and although it took me a long time to acknowledge it, my hair really doesn't look good long. And I don't find it hard work after years of blowing drying bobs! So if you're spending time straightening it, then you shouldn't feel like it's taking more time. Could you post a photo of your 'natural hair' might help us judge or suggest what could work?

Since I cut it short I've had about 3-4 slightly different variations of a pixie before I found the one that worked for me. So be prepared for the first cut not to be the one you stick with.

User67836 · 25/02/2019 16:55

Can you afford the up keep? A pixie needs to be cut often 6-8weeks and I've always had to pay for a normal cut rather than a trim if you know what I mean.
I had one cut in 6months ago and felt for the first tie it made me look older - I'm in my 30's, I seem to have it done every 10 years and never felt this before. I'm growing it out now, which is a pain.

There are pixie cut groups on Facebook

fishonabicycle · 25/02/2019 18:11

I have thick wavy hair - having a fringe was a bloody nightmare.

CaptainPovey · 25/02/2019 18:27

Don't do it. I remember having a very short cut and was in the bogs when out one day at work (I had a pinstripe trouser suit on) I looked at myself in the mirror and thought 'fuck me, no that has got to go' I looked extremely butch and whilst that's ok if its the look you want but its not mine.
I had put on about a stone by the time I saw the light and had not been able to see how awful I looked.
Its now long and I don't even know what possessed me to cut it in the first place

CaptainPovey · 25/02/2019 18:30

And its all very well people saying it will grow, but it seemed to take ages for mine to grow out and it went though a stage of Brenda Frickeredness and looked way older than I was

CaptainPovey · 25/02/2019 18:30

*through

CharlesChickens · 25/02/2019 18:38

I had a Mia Farrow type cut when i was younger and thinner and it was lovely. I would do it now but my face is chubbier.

squeefy · 25/02/2019 21:35

i had one. i looked like a boy with boobs! very high maintenaince. 2 years later i have long hair and its still a joy to just brush and go! i used to HAVE to use product and style it just to leave the house lol.

Winenotttea · 25/02/2019 22:34

I’ve got a pixie cut, it’s dyed silver grey. I absolutely LOVE it. I went from bra length to pixie this time last year and haven’t looked back.
When I had long hair it was always tied back so it looked short all the time anyway! With it actually being short I’m saving money on shampoo, conditioner and electricity!

RuggyPeg · 25/02/2019 22:41

No.

purpleelk · 25/02/2019 22:43

“Now, I am not in touch with what's fashionable but how about a short asymmetric bob?”

Well if you can remember it from the first time around in the 80s, you shouldn’t wear it when it comes back into fashion the next time ‘round.

Looked horrible then, still looking horrible now. But added grey Confused. Which honestly ages anyone over 40 by a decade but looks stunning against a youthful complexion of a 20 something.

OrigamiZoo · 25/02/2019 22:50

I know she is the woman of the day but you will end up with hair like this

which might not suit most people

CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 22:52

I have had a pixi cut and I have short thick curly hair naturally. I left it long on top so I could play with my curl a little but had it all cut in/shaved side and back. So it can be done with this texture hair. That's me in the picture.

At present I have a sharp jaw length bob that I have to straighten daily and it does my head in 😂

firesong · 25/02/2019 22:59

CoachBombay you're definitely a woman who can carry off a very short cut!

CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 23:06

forewing thank you, your very kind. People often say I look like a fairy/Pixy with big doe eyes so that's maybe why the cut fit lol 😂

Pixy cuts are not contrary to popular belief low maintenance though, I used to spend ages getting it to look how I wanted it too. 20mins with the straighteners now and I'm good to go! Haha!
