Pixie cut? Be honest!

Hello everybody,

I'm considering a pixie cut, but really really don't want to regret it. My hair is thick and curly (I straighten after every wash). I considering this one specifically:

goo.gl/images/TzhQAf

I have scribbled over my eyes for some vague attempt at anonymity, and also my 10 month old is going through the mother of all sleep regressions, so I have the worst dark circles ever.

What do you think? Go for the chop, stay as I am or maybe something I haven't thought of?

Thanks in advance xx

I have very thick frizzy hair and the shorter it is the more of a problem it is to control. Also I think short hair on you may look a little mannish and aging. Have you considered growing it so you can wear it up/back?

viccat · 24/02/2019 10:13

I think you'll struggle to straighten it when it's really short tbh.

My hair type is very different so not relevant really but I had a pixie cut for a bit couple of years ago. It was fun as an experiment but I found it completely changed how all my clothes looked and I didn't really feel like me anymore. It was strange. I grew it out quite quickly.

JaneJeffer · 24/02/2019 10:14

it's an old woman's hairstyle.
Wait until your at least 50.

II disagree. I had a pixie in my 30's. if you get it thinned out properly it won't curl up on you. Now that I'm an old woman of 50 Shock I have my hair longer because my jawline isn't as firm as it used to be.

ChristineBaskets · 24/02/2019 10:14

Definitely don't do it if your hair is curly and you want it straight. I made this mistake a year ago and I'm still growing it out Sad

kbPOW · 24/02/2019 10:16

Unless you have a very petite frame and very feminine features, don't do it.
A delicate face.
Also, in reality it's an old woman's hairstyle.
Wait until your at least 50.

I disagree with every word of this ^

Roominmyhouse · 24/02/2019 10:18

If your hair is curly it will never look like that picture short unless you are really good at blow drying it and even then during the day it’ll probably start curling back up.

GreenOliveOrBlackOlive · 24/02/2019 10:21

Wow not much to look forward to for ‘old’ women of 50..wait I’m 54, I’ll just wear a bag on my head. Or stay indoors.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 24/02/2019 10:23

My hair is wavy/curly but I embrace the scruffy look
Short hair is a nightmare with my hair. Bits twist in different ways and I have to blow dry it every day to make it look passable
Too much like hard work
At the growing out stage I look like I've had a shampoo and set!
Be careful
In the photo your hair looks fine and straight so it's deceiving

KataChrisi · 24/02/2019 10:29

I had a pixie cut in the past and to be honest I hated it and regretted it as soon as I did it!

People think short hair is quick and easy but it’s more work than long hair. It needs to be styled every day and when it’s that short it’s really difficult to straighten etc. You can’t just scrape it into a pony tail or clip.

The other thing is I did feel like a boy if I wasn’t wearing makeup and I have quite delicate feminine features. So you have to factor in how much time you have daily for hair and makeup.

Having said that you only live once and if you don’t like it you’ll just have to grow it out!

hugoagogo · 24/02/2019 10:29

I would just stop straightening it.

mmmm25 · 24/02/2019 10:33

I like your hairstyle now much better than the one you've linked to. Don't do it Shock

NotMeNoNo · 24/02/2019 10:37

The best haircut is one that works with your hair. I've got thick wavy hair that grows in different directions, it's cut in a pixie that sort of goes with the flow. Takes 2 minutes to dry and style. It is fantastic not to have the drudgery of blow drying and straighteners. OTOH if you have curls there is not much length to straighten, you might have a fight.

Also it's easy day to day but I absolutely need, 6 week trims or it starts going bushy and impossible.

sewingbeezer · 24/02/2019 10:42

Old woman of 50? Christ! AngrySad

DaphneduM · 24/02/2019 10:46

I would go for a layered bob and fringe - very flattering and would look lovely on you. As you say your hair is naturally thick and curly you could scrunch it dry, also, for a slightly different look from straightening it. Stay away from the pixie - personally I don't think that cut does anything for anyone - it's such a harsh and unadaptable look.

Yutes · 24/02/2019 10:48

All I will say is be prepared for regular upkeep - washing drying and regular cuts (at least every 6 weeks) so in some cases £££

WoollyMummoth · 24/02/2019 10:58

Jesus just read the nutcase with the dinner lady haircut story wtf! Why would you do that! You don’t have to make yourself look like a troll to ward off attention.
Anyway I had a pixie cut for most of my 40s .loved it . It was easy to manage, bit of Matt clay, and I got plenty of complements about how it suited me and I’m definitely not gamine.
Go for it .Whats the worst that could happen. If you don’t try it you’ll always wonder. I think it would definitely suit your face shape.

bassackwards · 24/02/2019 11:01

I've had a pixie cut for a significant proportion of my adult life - I'm mid-30s now. I've always loved the way it looks and feels, although my hair is naturally straight and very fine so different than yours OP.

But to be honest, a short style requires very regular hair cuts which is expensive and time-consuming. Now that I have a baby at home and work full time, I find a mid length bob MUCH easier.

The other thing to bear in mind is that with a pixie cut, you can't just roll out of bed and run out the door without washing/styling your hair because you will look like a rabid cockatiel Grin Longer hair that you can tie back gives you options.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/02/2019 11:04

OP you say you don't like your curls but have you ever tried the Curly Girl method? I used to straighten all the time but since starting a modified version of that my hair looks so much better curly. Now when I straighten I just think how flat it looks!

Hazeintheclouds · 24/02/2019 11:06

I wouldn’t risk it due to your natural hair texture and the process of growing it out. I don’t think they flatter many, either.

GatherlyGal · 24/02/2019 11:10

I'm with Notmenono you have to work with what you have and curly hair will NOT look like the style in your link.

My hair was long and thick and curly and I went for the chop. I love it but I have a fab hairdresser who knows how to go with the curl so it's easy peasy to manage.

Its short and a little bit longer on top but no sweeping fringe bit - in order to look reasonable I have to cut it regularly and it is pretty short so you do have to be brave!

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 24/02/2019 12:00

Sorry I also think they can look very aging unless you are very slender and girlish!
Are there any other cuts you like the look of? I cut my hair like this once....I hated it immediately. I have a round face and am quite fat - I was in a bad place and hoped it would transform me. Well it did that.......Shock

NotMeNoNo · 24/02/2019 12:03

Yes why not a curly layered bob? Or a little longer so you can tie back? Styles are as much about product as cut. My sister has natural curls but has only ever dragged a brush through and tied the resulting frizz back tightly. It would be stunning if cut well and with some curl defining cream. But it's her hair her call!

Hughes12345 · 24/02/2019 13:00

Do it but do it gradually. Just a bit shorter each visit and then you’ll know if it’s going to work for your hair type before it’s too late. Life’s too short to never try new things. You might love it!

MumUnderTheMoon · 24/02/2019 13:01

My dd has thick, course and curly hair and it's cut in a pixie crop. It's amazing! I have fine strait hair and it's also very short but hers is so much easier to manage than mine. She washes it once a week and rarely has to brush it. Mine needs washed every other day and needs a lot more managing.

userxx · 24/02/2019 13:08

My hair is thick and wavy, I have to wear it longer to drag it down, if you see what I mean. I had a bob once and resembled a mushroom.
