AIBU or do midi dresses

Look rubbish on anyone who isn't 6ft ?

Im trying to stay modern ( god I sound like my mum) and ordered a few but they look hideously droopy. I'm 5' 5" size 12, a rectangle 🙁, and like glamorous but classic clothes. Age 46.

Should I stick to my knee length dresses ? ( if I can find any, I'm not keen on Bodens offerings this season)

Anyone get on with midi dresses? What do you wear on your feet?!

I don’t like midi drssses, they give me weird proportions and draw attention Tommy super chunky calf muscles. Just on/above knee works best for me.

AuntieStella · 22/02/2019 08:07

I love di skirts (have had a really hard time buying skirts for years now, because I dislike how knee-length looks)

I'm 5ft7.

Tootrousers · 22/02/2019 08:11

I absolutely love midi dresses but I struggle with midi skirts for some reason. It must be to do with the top issue, the question of how to tuck and not emphasise stomach. Doesn’t happen with dresses though

thedevilinablackdress · 22/02/2019 08:13

If you like glamorous and classic, they're probably not for you.
I'm a little taller and tend to a scruffier look and they work for me

GVmama · 22/02/2019 08:15

They look dreadful on me too, instant frump-ville.

Like anything, wear them if you love them or if they suit your (tall, slim) shape, but I'll be leaving them well alone!!

woodhill · 22/02/2019 08:15

I quite like them, have a couple in a wrap style. I'm not particularly tall.

gettingtherequickly · 22/02/2019 08:16

Glamorous and classic needs a pencil knee length, midis are in fashion, but not for everyone. Stick to what suits you.

SleepyDibillo · 22/02/2019 08:17

Nah I they look shite on me too. I'm 5 ft 3.
I look like a child dressing up in my mum's clothes.

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 22/02/2019 08:19

I am with you here Tatapie. Am 5’2” size 8-10. Midi dresses make me look shorter and dumpy. It is not a flattering length on me. It is ageing and looks frumpy.

See also ankle boots with dresses of any length. They make my legs look shorter and chubby. I have very slim ankles, and hiding them in boots just looks awful and emphasises my lack of height.

Bobbiepin · 22/02/2019 08:22

I love midi dresses and skirts. It's the only length that really flatters me. I'm 5"7.

Depending on what it is for shoes. A casual t shirt dress I wear trainers (more dress trainers like Adidas scan Smith's rather than running shoes). If its a nicer dress/skirt then ballet flats or a small ish simple heel.

OxanaVorontsova · 22/02/2019 08:27

I like them, am 5’7, 48 and a 12-14 pear. My favourite is from urban outfitters, also like them hush and & other stories.

Tatapie · 22/02/2019 08:29

Thanks for your replies. It's comforting to know I'm not alone! Glad also that they work for some people!
I think those pp who said it's a style personality thing have hit the nail on the head, I'm never going to like them on me! Even though they look fab on some people. I will leave them to the willowy / boho Smile

I’m a 5ft7 size 12 OP and have quite a few midi skirt or dress that I imagine will make me look cool and off duty stylish....I in fact look as though I am about to offer a copy of The Watchtower. I think it is my proportions (long legs, short body, short arms)

SureTry · 22/02/2019 08:34

I like them but it depends on the style. I can wear fitted and slight fit and flare styles but anything that has a full skirt with excess material, especially around the waist, looks like a maternity dress on me. I'm 5ft 7 and size 8-10.

DistressedAndWorried7845 · 22/02/2019 08:35

I’m 5’10’’ and anything from just below the knee downwards looks weird on me so I’m with you op

SoupDragon · 22/02/2019 08:39

I think it's a really ugly length.

As for knee length dresses, have a look at esprit.co.uk. They usually have a huge vatiety of styles. I had good success in TK Maxx last summer too.

Jeackyll · 22/02/2019 08:46

They make me look like everybody’s Nan in the 80s. I’m 5’5”, a curvy size 12 and have the sort of face and hair that works with classic, understated or slightly vintage glamour style clothes.

tattooq · 22/02/2019 08:47

I'm 5'5" and an 8-10 and love them, I have bulk bought the bias cut silky midi skirts that are everywhere at the moment after buying a perfect but v expensive bias midi skirt from Realisation Par that I've worn to death. I do have very chunky calves so they may not be the most flattering but they are so lovely to wear in terms of fit and movement. I wear them dressed down with a big jumper and trainers or boots or with a tshirt and trainers or sandals in summer.

CalamityJune · 22/02/2019 09:02

They suit me- i've been wearing with heeled ankle or calf boots. I'm 5'5 and size 14

MakeTeaNotWar · 22/02/2019 09:26

@tattooq did you get the Naomi Wild Things skirt? I love love love it but can't make myself click purchase on the website as it's so expensive. Did you buy from the US?

Floisme · 22/02/2019 09:41

I'm not wearing them at the moment but I have done and I'm short (5'3). I have to find just the right length. I only like mid-calf if it's with knee boots but if I go a bit longer, to the very top of my ankles but not to full maxi, then I think it works. It's the same with cropped trousers, in fact it was the same with mini skirts back in the day when I wore them. I think there's always a sweet spot that works but sometimes you have to fiddle to find it.

slippermaiden · 22/02/2019 09:47

I'm 5'10", I have a dungaree dress and denim wiggle skirt in midi, they do suit me, but I wear them dresses down with Dr Martens or Converse, I'm scruffy not glam.

PatchworkGirl · 22/02/2019 09:51

It's a length I've always hated - very frumpy on me. But I am 5'2" and never wear heels...

EraOfTheGrey · 22/02/2019 10:02

Makes me look like Vera Stanhope. Having said that I do like wearing them.

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 22/02/2019 10:26

I'm just over 5 foot and I love them! I think rather than height is about the proportions of your body. I have a very short torso and midi suits me really well.
