The ever elusive 'nice top'

WarIsPeace · 04/02/2019 07:40

I am after a nice top to wear with black skinnies for a casual night out.

Ideally something scoop neck or v neck, have all the boobs but a podgy tum, high necks give me a shelf for a bosom. Not sleeveless please.

Have you seen one recently? I'm 40something and don't like animal prints...

I've had some nice tops from Wallis lately, it tends to be the last place I look but the first place I buy. There's always a sale too.

WarIsPeace · 04/02/2019 10:29

Thanks, will have a look.
I've had some in the past from fat face etc but nothing I like at the moment. I have a back up top if I can't find anything but I want to treat myself

Mint Velvet is good for that sort of top

Hollowvictory · 04/02/2019 10:37

Hush
Whistles

championquartz · 04/02/2019 10:45

I know you want V neck but I have this Other Stories one and I love it. I'm about a 28 E usually but I'm not overly norky IYGWIM.

Their silk shirts are good. Worth a punt?

WarIsPeace · 04/02/2019 12:23

That pouffy sleeve thing wouldn't suit me, I'm short and clumsy Smile

Will look at those stores, I usually just chuck a top in my trolley in Sainsburys so I hardly look at actual fashion

Ooh hush and whistles are too fashiony for me Blush I'm too short and stumpy for their look I think

I echo Mint Velvet for this kind of thing

BigFatBloomers · 04/02/2019 13:14

There’s a lot of animal print out there!

This from Matalan is a v flattering shape

BigFatBloomers · 04/02/2019 13:15

Or in rust

Loopytiles · 04/02/2019 13:17

Mint Velvet is almost all high necks.

grownup2 · 04/02/2019 13:18

I feel your pain re high necks and shelf effect... I'm considering this wafty forgiving number in an arty block print.

Nothing to contribute, I’m just stalking this thread for ideas! I’m late 30s and looking for basically the same thing! I’m breastfeeding so I need to be able to put a vest top under it and lift it up, so nothing too clingy. I’d just like something that looks a bit smart with skinny black jeans and does not have mum stripes!

WarIsPeace · 04/02/2019 13:35

Nothing I like so far... Am going to try debenhams and HoF for multiple brands in one hit.
M&S has nothing, so much animal print everywhere. And massive sleeves seem to be a thing again Sad

Tell us a bit more about what you do like and we might be able to help

Colours, usual style - rock chick, girlie, sophisticated, etc, budget, size?

WarIsPeace · 04/02/2019 14:21

Boring, casual, usually wear deep scoop neck t shirts or tunic style tops. No brights.
Sometimes a smallish pattern.

Back up top is scoop neck handkerchief hem short sleeve drapey thing.

Basically nothing jazzy, want to hide tummy but show off the girls Blush the casual night out is a first date in a classy bar /gastro pub type place

Size 16 ish depending on fit, 36f bust /slim hips. Fair colouring, suit navy, hate greens.

I've liked the phase 8 stuff I've looked at, usually buy dull stuff from Tu, M+S, fat face.

I keep seeing this Silk Fred top pop up on facebook. I don't have it but I do keep thinking it would look good on so many people as seems a flattering shape and they do so many colours

Cherrypie32 · 04/02/2019 14:32

You don’t sound that excited about clothes or yourself I have to say. You sound a similar size/shape to me and whilst it’s not easy to dress our shape I still find things I like. Can I encourage you to consider colour? One block colour not a busy pattern but buy some great shoes to wear with your jeans. Keep it simple. I agree that Phase Eight has some great tops for our shape. Check out their ‘Becca’ tops/jumpers.

WarIsPeace · 04/02/2019 14:46

Oh no I'm very meh about clothes but at the same time I sometimes need to look OK Grin

Will have more of a look at phase eight. I spend my dosh on beauty products and perfume rather than clothes tbh

I got a couple of very flattering tops from bravissimo last year. They're well-cut if you are big of bust.

N0tfinished · 04/02/2019 14:58

I like those loose silky shirts- collarless with a few buttons down the front. I find they're really flattering & wearable. My fave is from mango but I've seen them everywhere

Racecardriver · 04/02/2019 15:00

I have a lovely top that matches that discription from quirky circus from year ago.

BusterGonad · 04/02/2019 15:15

Oasis is my go to shop. How about these?

I like the second one Buster, too fat round the middle for the first really.
Will look at oasis and mango next Smile
