Half Tucked in Top

I admit I'm not fashionable but I do like reading things on this thread.

What is it with top tucked in tummy & then loose everywhere else ? I noticed it in M&S website, JL website, lots of magazine pics - what is the theory ? For me my wobbly tummy is my worst but (of many) & I think if I tried this look it would really draw attention to this part of me.

Looking forward to being enlightened, TIA.

I went for a personal stylist session at John Lewis before Xmas, and this was the only real sticking point I had with the advisor - she kept trying to get me to tuck tops in at the front, and I thought it looked stupid and refused to do it. I think it's supposed to be for when you have a loose top paired with a fitted skirt - you don't want to have a lot of spare fabric flapping around and making it look as if you don't have a waistline. I just tend to avoid wearing that combination of clothing!

mummyhaschangedhername · 28/01/2019 15:38

It's called a French tuck. I only know as I watch queer eye.

Fairylea · 28/01/2019 15:39

Dd aged 16 does this. She and her friends even tuck in chunky jumpers into skinny jeans. Shock If i do this I look ridiculous (size 14-16 aged 38). I think you have to be very slim or very young to pull it off really.

lunicorn · 28/01/2019 15:39

Katie Holmes does it. I think it looks a bit silly.

soberexpat · 28/01/2019 15:41

It's the French tuck from tan France on queer eye, I love it!!!

KaliforniaDreamz · 28/01/2019 15:41

It's a french tuck. I do it. all tucked in looks too weird, all untucked leaves no shape.
it is flattering imo.

InfiniteVariety · 28/01/2019 15:47

I hate it because it is clearly deliberately done but pretending to be casual. And it looks a mess

Floisme · 28/01/2019 15:47

I love it. I'm not in the least bit young, although reasonably slim and still have a bit of a waist. It's great for me because my tops never stay tucked in anyway. If it doesn't work for you I wouldn't worry - the trend will move on soon, if it hasn't already, and I'll be left still doing it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/01/2019 16:04

Signature look of Emmanuelle Alt, French Vogue editor.

Looks good on her.

banivani · 28/01/2019 20:05

Done right it really lifts a look! You get more lines and things going on, it’s more interesting.

LizzieSiddal · 28/01/2019 20:13

I do it and have done for years. i must be a trend setter 😂

I do it as I’m 5ft 2 and T-shirt’s are always too long, so I tuck the front bit into my jeans. I don’t do it with jumpers though.

Justmuddlingalong · 28/01/2019 20:16

I do this. Not because it's trendy or anything. But because it stops all those tiny wee holes appearing on tops.

WonderWoman2019 · 28/01/2019 20:18

do you mean all tucked in front but untucked at back (i do this)
or
the very weird and over contrived half in at the front and half out at the front too (the so-called french tuck).

emanuelle alt does the first one but i've never ever seen her do the second one

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/01/2019 20:18

It is almost as stupid looking as when the lads have their trousers hanging around their but-cheeks. I have the urge to yoik up their waistbands and tuck them in. Especially if they are wearing skanky pants.

Boyskeepswinging · 28/01/2019 20:20

I agree it can look great but it can also expose some hideous cases of camel toe.

HappyAndYouKnowItGlugTheWine · 28/01/2019 20:22

I do this with all my jumpers and a lot of floaty shirts. I'm 29 but think all untucked makes me look swamped and like I've got no shape (and old fashioned) and alll tucked looks so odd!

katiescarlett1939 · 28/01/2019 20:26

This really made me LOL, because DH's t-shirt was accidentally tucked in at the front and I said, "ooh, you've gone all Instagrammable" Grin

I do think it looks quite nice when I've seen women do it. Haven't tried it myself.

MeOldChina · 28/01/2019 20:26

I like it if wearing a button up shirt with jeans. If you've got bigger boobs then all untucked can mean that you lose all your shape. All tucked in makes me look like a cowboy.

DangerMouse17 · 28/01/2019 20:26

I do this...looks way cooler than all tucked in or just hanging loose.

BlueCornishPixie · 28/01/2019 20:27

I do this, I have a small waist but quite big hips so if I don't then I think i look a bit frumpy.

Thestral · 28/01/2019 20:29

I do it. I've got GG boobs on a size 10 frame, and it helps cut me into a decent shape in front instead of being seven eighths areola.

CremeDeSudo · 28/01/2019 20:38

I love this look but somehow it never looks right on me. Is it my chunky thighs? Because I'm a pear shape? Are my jeans too high and I should try with a mid rise? I fear I shall never know the answer and will forever be tuck-less. Sob.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 28/01/2019 21:22

Yup G cup and size 8/10 here - I do it with pretty much everything so I have something of a waist.

Freshprincess · 28/01/2019 21:28

I got sucked into the French tuck after too many hours browsing Pinterest.

I've not quite worked how to do it consistently well, as I either look cool and slim or like a scruffy fifth year. There's no in-between.

CountFosco · 28/01/2019 21:55

Love a french tuck. Looks so much better than loose. But TBH I don't mind all tucked in either, I just have to do a few yoga stretches to make sure my tops aren't too tucked in.
