Previous thread.

Usual rules - say what you like about the clothes, keep it civil re the wearers.

Sure, I understand your point, Curly, but that's why it should be limited to the immediate family, not the others to such a degree. Anyway, that's a whole other argument!!
Another St George's Chapel wedding quite soon!!

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/01/2019 23:22

That £1 figure doesn't take security costs into account - Republic estimate the true cost of the royals to be around the £350m mark. A president doesn't have to coat as much as that - I doubt it does in Ireland. But I think the U.K. is still a long way away from a republic!

Are there any figures available re the costs of the European monarchies?

What is it with those fugly shoes from Boden and M&S????

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/01/2019 23:33

Looks like Meghan is going to become Patron of the a National Theatre DM link. She will take over from HM.
Apparently there is £3m from American benefactors. I’m sure the Meghan Effect will boost those coffers.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/01/2019 23:35

Beatrice is on holiday with boyfriend Edo on an island off Kenya.dm link

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/01/2019 23:41

As pp said, the most expensive part of the RF is the security.
I think only the children of the eldest son / heir to the throne should be hrh’s otherwise you get situation like the elderly Kents and Gloucesters who are the Royal grandchildren of a monarch who died almost a century earlier, rather than in William and his children’s case, it will either be their living grandfather or father who gives them their hrs status.
It would be madness for a Sussex child to be anything more than a Lord or Lady.

LaurenOrdering · 05/01/2019 23:47

I wonder why it seemed more accepting in the 20th & especially 19th centuries for all grandchildren/great grandchildren of the monarch to be Prince & Princess & sometimes men who married into the royal family were given or offered a title?
My musings are more education for the masses (more people able to read) newspapers & then TV, & finally two World Wars shaking everything we ever knew completely up, sideways & back to front.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/01/2019 23:52

A lot of the children and grandchildren were married off to other Royal families to make Diplomatic alliances. I guess the status of a title was important then, and Royals only married Royals.
Now they marry commoners, so if you are not in the kernel of the RF, a title is a hindrance in the real world

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 06/01/2019 04:16

I wonder if H&M contrast the lives of Bea&Eug and Zara Tindall and weigh up whether it’s for the best to put any ideas of a HRH title for Baby Sussex to one side, even after Charles becomes king.

Especially given how comparatively late in life Meghan encountered the restrictions of the title- she had decades of freedom to do what she wanted. I’d find it hard to reject that for my dc in favour of the criticism and scrutiny that B&E have had since they reached adulthood.

Clionba · 06/01/2019 06:24

Beatrice and Eugenie both had gap years, having fun around the world, the security paid for by us. I remember seeing pics of Eugenie at a party on a beach in Thailand livin it large. Images like that made people question the cost to the taxpayer of their security. After that, and much to his chagrin, Andrew was forced to step up and pay.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/01/2019 07:30

WWI put an end to royal marriages as diplomatic alliances

Pressed send to early. It mainly put an end to them because the other party was usually german!

In the case of someone like Princess Margaret that was a shame. She would've done really well as a queen or grand duchess in another country.

With the Sussex baby, HM doesn’t need to do anything.
The Letters patent are pretty clear that any children of Harry as second son are styled Lord or Lady and no hrh.
I guess it will then be a decision for Charles if they get the upgrade when he becomes king.

SeaRabbit · 06/01/2019 08:03

My view on the costs of their clothes are that I am happy for them to wear expensive clothes, as I can see they need to stand out, but I get annoyed that they usually don't wear them again in public, and when they do it's only once more, no matter how expensive.

It's just so wasteful. Given Meghan wears navy and black so often she really only needs one navy, and one black, coat... they could mix .up the accessories and wear scarves to make a different outfit.

I don't want to pick on Meghan though, as Eugenie's red coat at Christmas cost ££££, as must Kate's and Sophie's and Beatrice 's, and everyone really, but only the cost of Meghan's was featured in the DM article.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/01/2019 08:16

I’ve seen Sophie wear her cream coat at least 5 times.
She’s the only one with a normal approach to clothes.
How on earth does Prince Andrew have enough money to fund 2 adult daughters and probably his ex wife.
He must be getting «fees» from his various business contacts. I know he does Pitch@palace, but the provenance of his wealth is very grey.

Going back a bit but has Kate ever worn Boden? The stuff is basically made for her Grin

There's a whole thread about that boden dress Curly - all brexity and political. Sent me running back to this lovely bubble sharpish I tell you!

Hairydilemma · 06/01/2019 08:38

Just catching up - so many pages in already!

Thanks for the new thread Queen.

Curly, thank you for the pre-RF Meghan red carpet pics. There are a few dresses there I’d have thought she could revisit for Royal life - not at the mo, obv but assuming she goes back to a similar figure post-pregnancy.

This red one reminded me a lot of Kate’s Preen dress with the asymmetric neckline.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 06/01/2019 08:43

My view on the security question - if they are at a high risk of being kidnapped or killed in a terrorist incident then they should have security paid for by the taxpayers IF it can be shown that the effort to find any perpetrators will cost more than the security to protect. If that makes sense.

I do not like that Boden dress - yes I too saw that thread Tipsey

Paradyning · 06/01/2019 08:44

Still more than 6 degrees of separation between Kerry Katona and members of the RF! Grin
Love that Boden ponte dress. Passed off someone think it looks Kate!

Paradyning · 06/01/2019 08:45

Ffs. Pissed.
