Dungarees

Should I?

I am 50. Size 8. 5 foot 4. Athletic looking but with boobs (hate them).

Last time I wore dungarees was 20 years ago when pregnant.

Thinking faded dark denim, relaxed style with legs folded up to lower calves and worn with long line tshirt and lace up plimsolls.

Will I look an actual dick or could I get away with it do you think?

I am 49 and wear Toast dungarees in a dark denim, rolled up, with Jigsaw sneakers or Chelsea boots. And I always get compliments about them! I love them.

Undercoverbanana · 03/01/2019 21:50

Thankssomuch - are you tall and sort of feminine looking or more of a tomboy type?

I am 51 and a size 12. I have hush needlecord dungarees. I have worn them with ankle boots/long sleeved tee. I think they look nice.

Thankssomuch · 03/01/2019 22:01

Actually the former, OP (size 10 and 5’8”, longish hair) but have seen dungarees look great on other body shapes too Smile

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 03/01/2019 22:51

I'm almost identical to you age and size wise, except my boobs aren't particularly big, and wear them as you plan to and often get told I look good in them.

Undercoverbanana · 04/01/2019 07:30

Thanks all.

I’m a believer in wearing what you want. These “rules” about not wearing shorts over 40 etc really annoy me. On the other hand, I don’t want to look stupid just to spite myself.

I was once told that leggings were only ok up to age 18. WTF? I wear them loads. I run in running knickers too.

Dungarees are lovely in theory. I have a 60 year old cousin who lives in them and looks stylish and awesome. But going to the loo ...Confused

MawkishTwaddle · 04/01/2019 07:50

I’m 44.

I have two pairs of Lucy and Yaks which are the comfiest things I own.

Also two pairs of Hush denim ones.

And a dungaree dress.

And several of the ‘flying squirrel’ suits that were recommended on here last summer.

Go for it!

hammeringinmyhead · 04/01/2019 10:02

I wore them this year while pregnant and loved them so much I bought some non-maternity ones from Asos. I'm a size 12 and 34.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2019 15:21

OP's description could be me. I wear the short ones in summer. Great with slim fitting t-shirts. Lots of pockets.

beela · 04/01/2019 15:24

Whaaat? No shorts over 40??

(misses point of thread)

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/01/2019 15:32

I have long and short ones, I love them.
I fancy a new black pair.

FaFoutis · 04/01/2019 15:32

I'm 47, I just bought some in the Levi's sale. I tried the Toast ones but I looked like I was wearing a shed.

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/01/2019 15:33

I wear shorts too, and short skirts, I'm passed caring what anyone thinks.

FaFoutis · 04/01/2019 15:35

Me too in general. The only line I draw is with short leathery skirts for some reason.

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/01/2019 15:41

Ha, I have a red leather kiltGrin

FaFoutis · 04/01/2019 15:47

I think I need to up my game. I did fancy a silver leather mini but couldn't get 'mutton' out of my head, which is stupid. I am rethinking.

SpiritedLondon · 04/01/2019 15:57

I like them although I’m not sure about them on me..... I’m a size 16 with an hourglass shape. My main concern about the bib area is whether my boobs would be hanging out either side which I suspect would look frumpy and “ children’s presenter”. ( on me - not you svelte ladies). I say go for it.... I’m tempted by a boiler suit if I can find the right cut. ( I already wear jumpsuits but they tend to be dressy )

IdblowJonSnow · 04/01/2019 16:01

Just try op! I'd like to experiment with this look too. I'm only 5 feet, where could i try some? I'm early 40s and a size 8-10.

I think if you’re going flashy with the lower half you need to go casual with the top half to counter it.... a bit like sequins with jeans or a ball grown with a biker jacket. I’ve got a black “pleather” pencil skirt I’m looking to wear with a casual oversized sweater but I just have to find the right cut. I’m 48 by the way

slippermaiden · 04/01/2019 16:11

Slightly hijacking the thread, where can I buy a dungaree dress? Can't find any at the moment.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2019 16:13

Primark, New Look, Gap, Dorothy Perkins maybe. I've seen loads.

slippermaiden · 04/01/2019 16:18

Thanks Mike, I'll try Gap.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2019 16:40

Good choice for denim. There were quite a few cord dungarees and pinafore dresses in Primrak the last time I was there.

Undercoverbanana · 04/01/2019 17:53

I’ve ordered a pair from Boohoo.

I have a denim pinafore dress from New Look in dark denim. Looks great with black tights and DMs.
