Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset to our wardrobes. Occasionally we pretend this is a proper Salon of the non-beauty kind.

Sorry meant to say, I still find my best pieces in the shop when not actively looking for something. I'm in rambler mode today, it appears Hmm

Decided not to buy the skirt, mainly because I couldn't think where I'd wear it and I didn't have anything sensible to wear with it, so I'd have had to buy more things and it just didn't make sense. Thanks for the suggestions though, everyone.

The coat sounds like a bargain at those prices!

Redandblue11 · 11/01/2019 16:34
  • @Xingming* * for V&A, could you make a Friday? If so then it would be, Elle, Bo, you and me plus any other ... If you could commit, could you let us know the potential fridays and we go from there. What do you think?
Redandblue11 · 11/01/2019 16:35

I was trying to tag Xing, hence the use of @ but clearly not a MN feature...

ferretface · 11/01/2019 16:35

Hello, I usually just lurk on this thread but wanted to say thankyou to Bo for the coat review and link as I've just snapped up the camel myself! What a bargain.

I also scored gold in both the Sezane 'archives' sale and the Bobbies sale. The Sezane sale has an annoying basket system which means you have to have very fast fingers but I was rewarded with classic suede 'Valentina' pumps - perfect for work - and a beachy open knit jumper which I have a million of already but I will wear it to death none the less (and likely snag all my jewellery on the open knit ) Wink

Also hit up the Bobbies sale for these classic ankle boots: www.bobbies.com/en/boots-la-bienveillante/4000648402-31159-boots-flat-mid-heels-cognac-la-bienveillante.html#/137-sizeeu-39

I have pretty skinny ankles so hopefully these will be flattering! I haven't ordered from Bobbies but have heard great things about the quality.

And now for the rest of January I shall be giving my credit card a little rest :)

Back to my regularly scheduled lurking.

Redandblue11 · 11/01/2019 16:48

Well, thank you Bo for that coat link! Will order that, but I have these others that are at the back of my mind so I am tempted to order another of these to try and compare, they are different I know... and some are towards the colours I said I did not want ... but they will come useful with big jumpers or when wearing a jacket for work type thing underneath.

Here are the others
Love this Bimba y Lola

Jigsaw one looks comfy for big stuff underneath
www.jigsaw-online.com/product/shadow-check-cocoon-coat/J37313_GY003

I tried this french Connection one and the fit is really good on me, the wool mix is on the thin side but that does not bother me too much, except I am unsure of quality

This Boden one is 100 wool and I supose could look good with a good belt ...

And now the Esprit one, the quality look as Bo says is very tempting, plus that price!

XingMing · 11/01/2019 17:28

@Red, I could do a Friday most weeks but it's the one day of the week when the afternoon/evening trains out of Paddington are guaranteed to be standing room only, and three hours of lurching around is not enjoyable for dowagers, so I'd still prefer mid-week.

Re the downsizing and the loss of the view, it will be a very very sad day indeed when we bid it farewell, but we are out on a limb, well away from family and friends living here. It's been great but it was a decision dictated by work, and when that tie is gone, so shall we. We plan to find something smaller and simple that we can lock up and leave for much of the winter. DH grew up in Asia and misses the warmth and light, for health reasons in part, so we are minded to explore new places a few months at a time while we can. And I shan't miss the blinking huge precipice of garden we own. DS has done sterling work (for his pocket money) since he was big enough but for some reason is reluctant to continue while he's working all hours in a kitchen.

Quietly pleased with today's casual monochrome (navy) look for a haircut. The Cos wide leg jeans (which, now they've been washed, fall rather nicely) navy jumper over a long length T shirt and the navy down blazer with my fancy silver and pony trainers plus a multi-colour digital print scarf that reverses to plain grey. And comfortable with it!

quirkychick · 12/01/2019 08:27

I lost my post, somehow! I love all the coats

Floisme · 12/01/2019 10:10

We did our kitchen so long ago it's probably out of date again so I can't help with the gadgetry but the big lessons I learned were:
You can never, ever have too much work surface, or too many electric sockets.
An old fashioned walk-in pantry/larder is brilliant - our parents / grandparents weren't daft.

The Margaret Howell pleated trousers arrived and I bloody love them. I did take some pics but the room was so messy I'm too ashamed to post them Blush But here's a google image until we've tidied up. They're very understated and you might wonder what all the fuss and cost is about but they hang beautifully with exactly the right amount of slouch and give off this really cool, confident vibe. Like her tailored stuff, they also feel as if they'll keep their shape all day and won't sag.
The pic doesn't quite capture the colour but they're a kind of olive-ish green which I chose deliberately as I've slipped into wearing a lot of grey, which is ok on me but not actually one of my best colours. They're a mid-weight cotton so wearable from spring through to late autumn which is important if I'm going to get my money's worth.

I'm still thinking them over cos they're a big buy for me and will severely curtail my spending for several months. But right now I just can't picture myself sending them back.

botemp · 12/01/2019 10:10

The Esprit one looks better on, bo, than on the website. well, obviously Grin

Well I hope it matches up to my description ferret, sounds like you did some excellent sale shopping this month.

Red, I could also do Monday, so if that day works for Xing? Thursday would be easy enough for me too but I think not for Elle?

From the coats, I'm not a fan of the Bimba and Lola as it's collarless but if you have good shoulders and a long neck it should be less of an issue. I like the check one from Jigsaw although if worry if I would get bored with it as it's a very current shape. Just going by the pictures the French connection one has used far too thin fabric to give good coat shape and IME FC doesn't age well. The Boden one is a difficult one, that pattern usually reads like a murky grey from afar, I always feel you need a good bit of colour to you for it not to wash you out or look a bit cheap up close.

OP posts:
botemp · 12/01/2019 10:12

Keep them already Flo! From that picture alone I can already tell they work really well for you.

OP posts:
Floisme · 12/01/2019 10:39

Thank you! I know - send them back, who am I kidding Grin But it will mean an austere spring so keep reminding me when I get tempted.

I hope you all manage the V&A trip. It's interesting to see how Brexit anxiety isn't only impacting on the UK - and also kind of scary.

botemp · 12/01/2019 10:56

I would say it's a different anxiety, Flo, I don't expect London will be burning and I have been to plenty of 'dangerous' destinations and felt absolutely fine about that. It's just the lack of certainty at the moment. If there's a WA it pretty much dissolves any worries I'd have but a no deal Brexit leaves me completely clueless as what to anticipate. If I'm stuck in customs for hours, need to bring in cash due to high conversion and transaction costs and possibly declare it, no more cheap calls or roaming on my phone, etc. drones, all makes a simple quick flying in and out a lot more complicated all of a sudden. Age is making me sensible, it's a crying shame Wink

Just catching up. Of the coats, the Espirit one looks lovely and I really like the Boden one, though feel like I'd get less use out of a patterned coat. Bimba one looked like it would be very flattering, but for me, the narrow neckline if worn fastened would limit the type of neck/knitwear you could wear underneath.

I bought this one when in Harrogate. I do have a camal coat, it was just £30 in Uniqlo sale about 18 months ago. I was unsure if I would wear that style of coat, but have worn it loads. It's looking a touch shabby now and so this would be it's replacement. Any feedback welcomed as I have about 2 weeks to return it.

Methenyouplus4 · 12/01/2019 15:06

Also feedback on this top. I bought it in a local boutique that is a really strange little place: staff are lovely and there is the odd jem, but there is also a lot of awful, diamonte covered, garish stuff.

It actually has a really strong smell of wool! There is a white plastic button which makes it look cheap, but I'll get my dad to swap it for me with a nicer one. The sleeves flare a touch and the effect made me look a bit swamped, so I tried rolling them up a bit to show my writs and that instantly made it look better. I thought it would look good with leather trousers?

Again, feedback welcome. I'll see if I can try them on later, though seriously starting to miss having a full length mirror at home.

Methenyouplus4 · 12/01/2019 15:30

Re kitchens, I don't feel that I can really comment, given that my sink is an old Belfast one that used to be in my parent's garden full of plants and we just have a mix of freestanding workstations that are sort of (in my mind) a mish mash that makes it look a bit country charm. Mmmm, not sure about that but we ran out of budget when we were doing the house and actually I have come to love it and can't imagine going back to a conventional fitted kitchen.

As someone with a larger family, the idea of double dishwasher sounds very appealing, as does room for a an extra freezer. Bench space is also crucial for preparing/serving up etc. We have a huge wooden Welsh dresser and that acts almost as a pantry and I love having it there and find it preferable to my previous home where all tins/flour etc were just stored in traditional kitchen units which made it harder to see what we had in.

Your trip sounds lovely but it's a no from me due to finances, not sure if photos will be allowed, but would be great to see some of the exhibition-also to see what you all wear.

Redandblue11 · 12/01/2019 15:49

Monday cor V&A?, Xing, Elle - would that work?

Ok, I decided to order the Sprit coat, I think I will wear that colour and shape a lot, due to price I found it easy to justify ordering the Blackhorse attellier jeans too. As I seriously do not own a decent (or even half decent) pair at all.
blackhorselane.com/product/n5-high-rise-slim-straight-indigo-stretch/
You get a 17% discount with first order.
I am really hoping both items are good on me as I see them as a step forward building up my capsule timeless wadrobe.

Methen the coat looks great, all depends if you feel good on it?
I cannot imagine the top on, would you wear loose on top of trousers? Tucked in? -looks a bit bulky to tuck in?- or with belt? Sorry i am not a lot of help, I am lacking the ability to imagine it on. Must be just me ...

Need to go and prepare stuff as hosting a dinner and drinks at home. Maybe I can wear my new velvet Madewell top .

Redandblue11 · 12/01/2019 15:49

For V&A. Not “cor” ...

XingMing · 12/01/2019 19:54

I could do a scheduled Monday @Red. Just need to organise doggie day care ahead of time....

ToElleWithIt · 12/01/2019 20:41

I could do a Monday. Will be back with a more comprehensive reply about the lovely clothes here when kids cooperate.

Methenyouplus4 · 12/01/2019 21:56

Red- I think I would just wear the cream jumper loose on fitted trousers/jeans. In many ways, it actually hangs more like a coat.

Bo- thank you again for skin care recommendations, I've bought the Paula's Choice and am going to investigate the on-line service you mentioned on Monday.

Not for me, but hoped someone may be able to recommend a good cream for healing. Because of his medical needs, youngest DS has 2 tubes permanently entering fleshy parts of his skin. Because he is only 4, that's basically only his poor little peachy bott. They are changed every few days but he resembles a dart board; any creams that woukd soothe/ encourage healing? I did ask his doctor, but there doesn't seem to be a sort of 'standard issue' one.

And back to a style query... Do skinny leather belts look odd in normal width belt loops? I was wearing a dark top tucked into jeans a few days ago with a dark leather skinny belt and it suddenly occurred to me the dimensions looked odd: perhaps they are better worn high on the waist rather than the hips? Certainly, I think it made my proportions look 'off and wasn't especially flattering. Is there a rule to where different width of belts are best suited? Or does it depend on the outfit/shape of the wearer?

botemp · 12/01/2019 22:09

Methen, La Roche Posay Cicaplast B5 is great for encouraging healing and can be used on open wounds. I believe escentual is currently doing a 1/3 off French pharmacy brands.

You can also look into silicone bandages, they're quite expensive, offered under healthcare insurance here but I'm not sure if they are in the UK. They're used post surgery mostly to accelerate healing without scars, supposedly works on old scars too. It's called Scarban, they come in large sheets and you cut them to size.

Will catch up with the rest later, need to get to bed, was planning on watching Call My Agent but I doubt I'm going to stay awake for a whole episode.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 13/01/2019 09:54

Methen you probably have tried but Savlon Healing Gel (they do a gel,not the normal savlon cream) works for helping wounds and reduce scarring, I have tried it and was very effective, however I am not sure if it is for children. You might want to check?

Also 3M do a number of post surgical creams / plaster (might be similar to what Bo mentioned). Again I am not sure about suitability for children , but you might want to look into it?

Flowers for you and DC

I am also waiting for response on belt - I sometimes commit the same “crime” and never quite sure what belt best and where ...

Redandblue11 · 13/01/2019 10:01

V&A DIOR
Monday seems possible for Bo, Elle, Xing and myself.

So - can a date in March pre Brexit work or you need more notice?
11 March
18 March

April is tricky for me as we are away for large part.

May Mondays -
6/16/20?

June Mondays
3/10/17

x

XingMing · 14/01/2019 12:52

EIther March Monday is fine with me as things stand. Happy to join the majority preference date.

I go on and off belts, but my Hiut jeans have double loops with a small set under the regular width so the belt stays evenly anchored all around which is a good solution.

Love the new trews Flo and no, I can't see them getting returned! But a picture would be wonderful to appreciate the full effect.
