Link to previous thread.

And once again, let's keep this good-spirited. Spiteful comments are about as welcome as Fergie at Prince Philip's birthday party!

Some people seem to cross behind the knees not a good look there is a of Beatrice curtsys that way too. Where as Kate and camillia seem to cross at the ankle which looks better. Not sure protocol wise which is correct

frugalkitty · 06/12/2018 22:43

Just popping in for my bedtime catch up....this thread is the first thing I read in the morning too! I really liked the red dress Leti wore today, that shade of red really suits her. Rare miss for CP Mary though, I like the colour on her but not the cut/fit/embellishment of the coat at all. The length wasn't right either, I thought it made her legs look a bit stocky which they most certainly aren't (and as someone whose legs most certainly ARE stocky, sigh, that's something I tend to pick up on). Oh I wish I had skinny legs, you can get away with a fair bit if your legs are slim.......

SenecaFalls · 06/12/2018 22:45

Kate, Camilla, and now Meghan don't seem to dip as far down, either. That's what makes some of those other curtsies look so ridiculous.

But the really funny pictures are some of the ones of European royalty, who do some sort of kiss and embrace first and then curtsy while still holding on to be person they're curtseying to. The pictures look like they're being held up to keep from falling.

BigGlasses · 06/12/2018 22:46

I used to do highland dancing and in some of the dances you have to curtesy at the start and end so I am quite familiar with curtsying. It comes quite naturally after a while. However have never been close enough to a royal to need to ( well i’ve met princess Anne but I was in a lab coat and can’t remember if I did) I agree that a crossed ankle is much more elegant and manageable than a deep crossed knee/thigh affair.

Want2bSupermum · 06/12/2018 22:50

I'm under 40 and at school we had lessons on how to curtsy. Basically you put your weight on your left foot and draw a circle with your right big toe starting at 12 o'clock. Draw your right ankle behind your left ankle and bend the knee to the point where your knee doesn't extend over your ankle. It's more of a squat and very similar to a yoga pose!

I think it was the most useless lesson of my life because I had already been taught and told to practice infront of the mirror while the other girls in my class would never curtsy again in their lives. Would have been much more efficient to focus on how to get out of a car gracefully which is much harder than it appears.

Want2bSupermum · 06/12/2018 22:51

Sorry knee doesn't extend beyond your foot. Of course it has to extend beyond your ankle!!!!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 06/12/2018 22:52

I see what you mean Seneca

That holding - on curtsey looks like grovelling!

itswinetime · 06/12/2018 23:02

The holding on curtsys is a whole different level looks awful but respect to the ladies for keeping balance I would be straight over especially in heels

TheSpottedZebra · 06/12/2018 23:04

Look at Sophie curtsying from behind - looks even more ridiculous.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/12/2018 23:05

It's probably easier in heels, no? As long as you're on firm ground.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/12/2018 23:12

Yeah I like the fashion and tiara talk but seeing these photos really does hammer home what an outdated institution royalty is. The Europeans look even more ridiculous, and I've always thought them less formal than the Brits!

Nothing is easier in heels for me but maybe it is I have gone down the a odd path of curtsying and I just can't figure it out everyone seems to do something different Zara anne and Beatrice all taught since a young age I assume seem to go for the really deep type

Honestly thought Anne had fallen over in that middle pic and Felipe was helping her up!

Diana is different again Kates seems the most graceful although I do agree the whole thing is a little ridiculous

Maybe she had Queen and styled it out with a curtsy Wink

famousfour · 06/12/2018 23:28

That’s given me the real giggles. Can’t insgine doing anything so absurd. But Kate looks the least silly.

Want2bSupermum · 06/12/2018 23:34

That's the curtsy lunge. It doesn't look as elegant compared to the way I was taught. The curtsy lunge is excellent when you are in heels.

ElspethFlashman · 06/12/2018 23:34

So it seems there are two types of curtsey - the ankle bob and the curtsey lunge.

The lunge type is horrible, Theresa May doing yoga, dreadful. However it does seem to be the one Beatrice and Sophie do? And Diana did a lunge too. So maybe it is genuinely taught that way?

The ankle bob is the one Kate does, and whilst far more dignified, seems to be quite rare. He never ever extends her back leg.

It's also the one Meghan is doing, though she's been critized for her apologetic jerk. But she'll get the balance right in time and I'd much rather she did a bob in the future than a lunge.

Want2bSupermum · 06/12/2018 23:35

The ankle curtsy isn't a bob. You hold it for 10.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 06/12/2018 23:38

RE Curtsying- wasn’t it Cherie Blair who (quite rightly) refused to do it and the papers made a “thing” of it?

itswinetime · 06/12/2018 23:47

The royals apart from Kate Camillia and Meghan definitely seem to prefer the lunge however silly it might look!

Hopefully she did! things like that definitely need be put out to pasture I didn't realise till tonight Kate had to curtsy to different people depending on if William is with her or not!

TheSpottedZebra · 06/12/2018 23:52

That curtsying rule change was brought in as Anne (and someone else, but i forget who) didn't want to curtsy to Camilla, when Charles wasn't there. Apparently.

beanaseireann · 06/12/2018 23:53

I wouldn't curtsy to anyone.

AhoyDelBoy · 06/12/2018 23:55

I used to work in the criminal courts. One of the lawyers always used to curtsy to the magistrate rather than bow. I always had to try not to laugh Grin
