What would you do with hair like this?

I’m a bit fed up.
Naturally curly but mostly a halo of fuzz. Curls don’t hold but I don’t care for them so would prefer to blow dry and stick in a bun than do any kind of curly method. Honestly I really don’t have interest in cultivating curls.

Mostly blow dry straight and occasionally ghd.
Am 44, condition getting worse, just frizz and fuzz.
Use kerastace shampoo and their cement thingy anti frizz heat protectant, and a deep condition twice a week.
When not straightening my hair still behaves similarly. Oils make it limp and greasy, creams not so bad.

Just want an easy life, hate it poker straight but my waves are dreadful. it makes me feel ugly and weird, however silly that sounds.
Natural colour never dyed. Is very pale blond in daylight although a bit muddy in these pics.
Do not wish to colour it.

What would you do? My partner seems to love anything I do to it and has romantic notions about the frizz fgs (bless him). Lovely but not helpful!

Pics attaches are freshly conditioned and combed through, air dried. Ugh.

Another pic to illustrate fuzz.
My hair is like atmosphere; if you put a bobble in it then remove it, my hair stays in that shape, defying gravity.

Have you thought about a Brazilian blow dry?
I'd either embrace the curl or use a babyliss big curl.
Either way I feel your pain as I have curly hair

Villanelley · 28/11/2018 18:45

French braid hair when 90% dry. Sleep on it and in the morning you should be left with more regular, wiggly curls. Break them up with your fingers for a beachy, tousled look.

As well as encouraging curls I'd also be tempted to get some blonde highlights put in, they should be able to lift it a couple of shades without even using bleach.

Lweji · 28/11/2018 18:48

How often do you wash it?

Musicforsnorks · 28/11/2018 19:07

Baxdream - by doesn’t work well, although it turned the ends under nicely when I had a Bob last year. Otherwise it tends to send my hair frizzier.
The Brazilian blow dry bothers me for some reason, I don’t want the upkeep. Why are curls so unreasonable?!

Villanelle - have thought about hilights in past, might do at some point. At moment it has some nice sun kissed hilights of its own in normal lighting so not sure yet.
Have tried the braid thing. What bothers me is how after releasing my hair from any braid, however loose, my hair goes ‘up’ rather than down over my shoulders. Keeping a wave or curl in it is a full time job, much more difficult than straightening.

In a quandary as I hate it flattened and the ends look parched and thin .
Here’s a pic after blow drying at high heat with parlux. Can’t see how bad ends are here though.

Lweji - once every 3 days. Usually.

When left natural once every 2.
Have tried sulphate free etc, nothing appears to alter my hair.

We have the same hair although I'm growing out highlights. My hair has been transformed since I started just conditioning it every 5 days. I was very nervous at first but now I can do anything with it and no frizz. I just let it dry naturally. It is a total transformation. Gutted it took me until my 40's to tame it!

TheLastNigel · 28/11/2018 19:17

No upkeep on a Brazilian blow dry. You just get it done, don't wash you hair for three days, you are left with shiny, not necessarily poker straight but more manageable hair for three months-it's aces. My hair looks like yours in places and it really was a miracle.

hurrythefuckupgeorge · 28/11/2018 19:17

I would go for a keratin blow dry, you can buy kits online and do it yourself every few months if cost/hassle of getting it done at hairdresser is too much.

It has totally transformed my frizzy hair

Musicforsnorks · 28/11/2018 19:22

The last Nigel - I like the sound of it, but sure I read here somewhere that it can mess with condition of hair over time?

Half pass - I love the sound of that and it’s nice to hear about someone finding a way out of the frizz prison!
Do you mean that if I left it alone,,consistently, it would calm down?
I’ve been using a nexus (not sure of name) masque to condition a few times per week, alternating a Kiel’s sulphate free shampoo with my
I even tried the famous elasticiser but it seems to leave my hair more fuzzy!
I left my hair to dry naturally for one week. Maybe it would take longer to help it?

You need product .. my hair looks like that without styling .. 😬

Neededastealthname · 28/11/2018 19:27

That is what my hair used to look like, I'll try to attach a pic of what it looks like now but the things I have done are switch to head and shoulders smooth and silky shampoo, (I think that's the name) and much to my amazement it's fantastic (a YouTuber was raving about it which is why I tried it in the first place), I also do a keratin treatment at home and I get that from amazon, just search for keratin treatment and it's by cocochoco. One thing you could try is completely saturating your hair with conditioner (I put it on dry hair) and leaving it overnight.

With product 🤷‍♀️

Your hair is curly ! How do you style it at the moment ?

Neededastealthname · 28/11/2018 19:33

Hendricksy, was that question for me?

stayfit · 28/11/2018 19:33

I have very similar hair and have tried the Brazilian (eye watering £200 quid). It was ok for 12 weeks and then it was mostly back to usual. I won't ever try it again after I came to know that
Brazilian blow dry have side effects, even the formaldehyde free ones www.cosmopolitan.com/health-fitness/a8511737/brazilian-hair-straightening/. I think deep conditioning and helps. Coconut oil is helping me although I do have frizz days when I just wear it up.

hendricksy · 28/11/2018 19:33

For the Op

Halfpass · 28/11/2018 19:49

Yeah just condition every 5 or so days and that's it for me. My hair was so dry and crispy and would only look good if I straightened it. I started by using conditioner then shampoo and liked the results, then just conditioner. Good luck breaking out of frizz prison!

Musicforsnorks · 28/11/2018 20:05

Hendricksy - my god your hair is lovely! I like the ‘size’ of the curls if that makes sense. They look thick and healthy, just perfect.

Mine does curl but it drops out quickly. More a mass than curls. One side curls and the other just....flattens. I dare say I could encourage them with product but it would be very finicky and difficult.

I am so used to seeing my hair on the straight side that it feels ‘unknown’ to me, as if it would alter my sense of identity somewhat, however curious that sounds. It would take some getting used to.

OP posts:
GVmama · 28/11/2018 20:07

I have similar hair (although mine is thicker I think). I've been using the Curly Girl method (co-washing with sls and silicone free conditioner) but instead of scrunching and encouraging the curl I smooth my hair straight with conditioner and cg friendly gel on. It dries straight-ish and smooth, with no frizz, and lasts up to a week before it needs co-washing again. It's low maintenance and it works! It's the first time in my life my hair has been properly frizz free without loads of straightening and products.
Did you say you're using an sls free shampoo? Do your conditioner and other products contain silicones? There might be a build up of product affecting the condition of the hair. It might need a final clarifying wash with sls shampoo and avoiding silicones in future. That would be my guess Smile

Musicforsnorks · 28/11/2018 20:08

I’ll be honest, I am happier with a loose bun or half pony. It seems to suit my face better and I sort of like my neck, haha.
I guess I associate wearing my hair up with ..... giving up, which is ridiculous, but you hear so many people saying they only put it up when they’re ready to wash it.

The trauma is when I go to wear it loose.
The straightened look seems dry and parched yet the waves are berserk.

tenredthings · 28/11/2018 20:09

Try using just conditioner to wash it and no shampoo at all. I use shampoo every two weeks and just conditioner the rest of the time, comb through with fingers whilst washing. Never blow dry or brush or comb after only with your fingers. I find this eliminates the frizz.

Musicforsnorks · 28/11/2018 20:11

Neededastealthname - if that is your hair ‘before’ I would pay good money for it now! It’s beautiful.

OP posts:
Musicforsnorks · 28/11/2018 20:12

Tenredthings - have tried not brushing, etc, the mass of frizz still forms.
Not tried eliminating shampoo, though. wouldn’t this make my roots greasy?
