What would you do with hair like this?

I’m a bit fed up.
Naturally curly but mostly a halo of fuzz. Curls don’t hold but I don’t care for them so would prefer to blow dry and stick in a bun than do any kind of curly method. Honestly I really don’t have interest in cultivating curls.

Mostly blow dry straight and occasionally ghd.
Am 44, condition getting worse, just frizz and fuzz.
Use kerastace shampoo and their cement thingy anti frizz heat protectant, and a deep condition twice a week.
When not straightening my hair still behaves similarly. Oils make it limp and greasy, creams not so bad.

Just want an easy life, hate it poker straight but my waves are dreadful. it makes me feel ugly and weird, however silly that sounds.
Natural colour never dyed. Is very pale blond in daylight although a bit muddy in these pics.
Do not wish to colour it.

What would you do? My partner seems to love anything I do to it and has romantic notions about the frizz fgs (bless him). Lovely but not helpful!

Pics attaches are freshly conditioned and combed through, air dried. Ugh.

My dd1 has very similar hair to yours. Or she did. Experimented with various different shapes and conditioners and has settled on Garnier Ultimate Blends Coconut milk shampoo and conditioner. This has made a massive difference to her and she has beautiful, shiny, golden ringlets now.

Not expensive, so surely worth a try. Hair looked better almost immediately, but it took a couple of months to move from frizz to curls.
The frizz-ease stuff was awful for her hair. Left a dry frizzy mess.

bluebell2017 · 29/11/2018 11:22

Should add that dd1 uses the curly girl principles that others have mentioned. All the same, it took a bit of experimenting to find a shampoo and conditioner that really worked well for her. She has fine blonde hair, but lots of it.

hendricksy · 29/11/2018 11:25

@MissFiggy .. I wash as usual then when it's soaking wet I use umberto Gianni curl creme and scrunch it in... I then towel dry my hair making sure my hair is on top of my head not dragged into the towel .. I then diffuse .. it last about 3 days .. my hair is mega thick and if I just blow dried it without styling looks just like the op's .. in fact it does before I straighten it ( if I choose to do so ) ..
I've tried the curly girl but it makes my hair sticky and mega mega curly which I don't like .

hendricksy · 29/11/2018 11:25

In fact I usually wash in head and shoulders supreme with their conditioner too.

Almondio · 29/11/2018 11:31

Have you tried using a Babyliss big hair dryer? I have naturally curly hair, which has changed from ringlets in my teens and 20s, to looser curls after pregnancies. These days I either wear it naturally curly but product is essential otherwise I get the Crystal Tips look! Otherwise I blow dry it with the Big Hair to give a bouncy finish, which makes me feel polished and grown up; it's still 'me' as it's not poker straight, but it feels more finished than when I wear it curly.
I'd try experimenting and see what you can do by yourself rather than going down the chemical treatment route.

Musicforsnorks · 29/11/2018 13:31

Flossie - I like a success story! Did you feel any initial hesitation regarding the embracing of curls? I can handle the idea of waves but not curls, probably because of that unpredictability you mention, and also as I don’t think they suit my face or style. This is the most difficult hurdle for me; I hate it flattened straight but the idea of curls changes my look and routine so much that it puts me completely off. Plus I have no idea if my curl type is decent.

I really love how I look with softer waves but getting them, and keeping them going for 3 days is what worries me!
I’m glad to hear your hair recovered. It feels like a far off dream for me.

Wine yummy- I hadn’t thought of mousse, may have to try some.
Any recommendations to rid me of frizz with a Soft hold?

And thanks for the product recommendations above Smile

Definitely try the Pantene number 3 mousse, I've had a few but this one is the best by far. It dries in a 'cast' as CG would say but really easily scrunches out and doesn't leave hair sticky or gross. Elnett was the worst mousse, it made my hair really waxy. You have to put it on soaking wet, smooth hair so it stays smooth as it dries.

I'm mid 30s and can't believe I've only figured this stuff out this year. Probably helped that I had a short mum cut last year so I was starting with relatively healthy hair.

Flossie71 · 29/11/2018 14:01

Musicforsnorks it took a short while to get used to but it was so dried out anyway that it's not like it looked great before I started the curly process. Then I had more compliments on my hair than I've ever had once I wore it curly/wavy so that encouraged me. Do have bad hair days still though!

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 29/11/2018 14:08

Do you touch your hair a lot? When you say 'combed through', do you mean combing it when it's dry? The only way waves stay in a nice uniform pattern on my head is if I don't touch my hair at all. I never comb or brush it, ever.

Musicforsnorks · 29/11/2018 17:19

Face like tits (inspired username!) - yes I do, it comes from years of unconsciously smoothing the sides to keep them straight in wet weather. In fact the sides of my hair are a bit busted as last year it was cut same length all way around. It must be snapping off as I ‘maul’ it.
Keeping my hands away would take some doing!

Flossie - this happened to me when I had a longish Bob, it got shut of damaged hair for a while and swished all nicely when blow dried. First time I had compliments in yrs. in my teens when I wore it curly people would come up and touch it. Everyone loved that look and then the flat iron style came in and blasted it to bits. I wonder if the curl will have a renaissance soon?

Windy, ummy - thanks I am definitely going to try this:)

I would absolutely stop blow-drying and heat-treating it completely. Maybe try a protein or keratin treatment. Once it has recovered, it will be gorgeous!

Charley50 · 29/11/2018 18:07

I've got similar hair to you op and it's a bloody nightmare! My low-fi way to smooth i go to bed with a tight woolly hat on after washing/ conditioning! (Hope that doesn't put me). In the morning it's flatter, shinier and with a nice curl nearer the ends for a day or two. Then back to frizz!!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/11/2018 18:35

Mines like yours, but brown grey and a foot longer. I either just embrace the wanton boho look, or I straighten in but when it’s hot I curl it round my hand to make a ‘not straightened’ sort of look. Not curled, but not poker straight. It’s much better when I don’t wash it so often and also when I use a silicone free shampoo

minipie · 29/11/2018 18:46

DD has similar hair, I think.

I stopped used shampoo on her and just use conditioner, once every 2-3 days. Put her hair up in a hair towel (the ones which twist up and fasten at the front) which half dries it and then air dry.

Also use spray in conditioner (Aussie) every morning.

Never blow dry.

Her hair is lovely: when using shampoo it was dry and bushy.

CoteDAzur · 29/11/2018 18:50

Stop combing and brushing your hair.

Comb with fingers + hair conditioner in the shower, then wring with towel to take out excess water, put on a curl cream (not jel) and then leave your hair alone.

See what your hair is really like with its natural curls Smile

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/11/2018 18:51

www.boots.com/elvive-full-restore-5-low-shampoo-400ml-10238561

Try this. It's a cream shampoo.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/11/2018 18:51

Also, don't faff around with drying, towel off gently, leave to air dry.

Neededastealthname · 29/11/2018 20:03

Enidbutton, yeah it's not dyed but it does get very close to ginger in the summer!

OP pffft I wish that was the before! But it was with no styling (just blowdryed while dragging a brush through it randomly).

I wish I had a before pic because it real was just nothing but frizz, the turning point was when I tried the curly girl method (I'll post a pic of the results), it ended up just too much of a faff but it did teach me the importance of conditioning the hell out of it!

What would you do with hair like this?
LizzieSiddal · 29/11/2018 20:07

I have the same hair.

The thing which really works for me is putting in handfuls of Elastizier.
If I used they recommended amount it did absolutely nothing, but put load it on. Wash and dry however you like and it’s soft, shiny and bouncy. I’ve just bought a litre bottle of the stuff and wouldn’t be without it.

Racecardriver · 29/11/2018 20:10

It’s too damaged for any treatment. You need to stop heat treating it and start taking care of it the lop off the damaged bits when you’re ready.

Racecardriver · 29/11/2018 20:11

Oh and the elatisizer stuff is amazing but bloody expensive

al2002 · 29/11/2018 20:21

The Phillip Kingsley elasticiser is fantastic product.

Shriek · 29/11/2018 21:24

music if I try to comb mine it looks the same as yours, curly hair is a nightmare to manage, until to you find you way!

Mine looks like your first picture, although a mass of it! Then it looks more like Hendricks after dried naturally. I cannot get a hair dryer anywhere near it! I used to be a hair model, and my stylist did loads with my hair, even really short, but mine is very thick and unmanageable, its easier when the hair is at the bottom end of your arms than having to reach up where its at the top and kills my arms!

She taught me how to manage my hair, as she had the same hair but three times the length and I was amazing!

So, I have a wide tooth comb for only coming immediately prior to shampooing. This will remove and detangle hair without too much tugging and stretching. Then use a paraben free shampoo, thats gentle on your hair.

Then I pat my hair dry and use the towel to scrunch the majority of water out. I then, once most of water gone, and curls like ^ I scrunch conditioner through it!!! Yep, and I leave it there. A lot of people comment on my hair, but it drives me nuts, but actually the washing/styling of it is now easy for me, it also grows really fast so perpetually cutting it myself, as I invariably come away from the hairdressers in tears!

Because I have so much hair I have to use quite a lot of conditioner, it doesnt keep it under control, but it does calm it significantly!

Needed a stealth name is a stealth boast!

Shriek · 29/11/2018 21:26
  • I wasn't amazing!!! 'It' was amazing! [stylists hair]
Shriek · 29/11/2018 21:29

The comb thing was not for 'coming' before shampooing Blush....but 'combing'
