Work shoes: would I be committing a style crime if I purchased?

Workreturner · 26/11/2018 13:15

Returned to work recently after 9 year SAHM

It’s a fairly senior corporate London role.

I’m 37 and have a good work wardrobe. Mainly Reiss and Jospeh and Sandro

BUT shoes!!! Ten years ago I wore them high and dodo not give a damn if uncomfortable. My shoe collection was nothing short of exquisite.

Now? Hmmmm I’m err more on side on comfort when comes to shoes. I’ve not completely lost my commitment to show style though.

Would either of these be a disgrace?

If yes, please point me in direction of some comfort and mid heel height black work shoes. They can’t be high heel.

The first ones are awful. The second pair are slightly better.

If heels are the issue could you go for some nice brogues?

Cherries101 · 26/11/2018 13:19

If you’re wearing them with opaques then fine.

Clockwork95 · 26/11/2018 13:19

Watching with interest as I spotted the second pair and wondered the same thing.

You sound exactly like me OP, work clothes sorted but shoes are a headache. Cant do uncomfortable heels any more. And flats don't look right with a lot of my work skirts and dresses.

spanishwife · 26/11/2018 13:20

They are both AWFUL! If you are wearing Sandro and Joseph then you will be completely killing the outfit. Find some low block heel courts with a pointed toe. Plenty about and they are very comfortable.

Shalll · 26/11/2018 13:20

I'm in a senior corporate role and wear flat boots. They go with everything, except possibly a formal skirt suit but I never wear those.

I feel so much more 'powerful' wearing comfortable sturdy shoes.

Good luck!

Immigrantsong · 26/11/2018 13:20

Both area bit old fashioned (being very gentle here, as I think they are hideous), but most Gabor shoes tend to be. You can style them in a vintagy way and get away with it, especially if they are comfortable but if you are really fashionable then how about brogues or a more classic mary jane?

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2018 13:22

Noo you can do better than that

GraceMarks · 26/11/2018 13:29

Don't go for court shoes unless they have some sort of strap across them - otherwise, you'll just be bunching your toes to stop them slipping off when you walk.

The general style of the pictured shoes isn't terrible, it's just the execution of them! Gabor tend to be very frumpy in their detailing, it's hard to pin down why, but I think the over-reliance on elasticated bits and fancy stitching is a contributing factor.

I can't wear heels at all because of health issues, and my work shoes consist mainly of brogues in black or brown, mary-janes with a low blocky heel, or flat boots. I can wear any of these with either skirts or trousers. I find most of what I want in Clarkes or in the supermarket ranges, but be careful of rubbishy quality soles in the latter.

Not true - you need some better fitting shoes @GraceMarks!

GraceMarks · 26/11/2018 13:34

I'm fine with the ones I've got thanks, spanishwife. It's just the case for many that court shoes with what you would class as having a low vamp don't stay on very well and you have to tense your foot to stop them slipping. It's not good for the health of the foot so I avoid them.

JennyHolzersGhost · 26/11/2018 13:36

Eewwwwww.

I’ll give you my usual recommendation - Clark’s. They’re very comfortable.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 26/11/2018 14:11

You know, I'm not sure about pointy toes and very square block heels. To me, it's like a cut and shut car - Audi TT at the front, Volvo Estate at the back. But then I couldn't deal with the round toes/kitten heels combo either.

I'm obviously a fussy cow where shoes are concerned.

Sorry, as you were.

Cherries101 · 26/11/2018 14:42

I’m a banker in central London and typically wear shoes similar in shape to the below. I love my chanel flats but I have a set of loafers too. I pair them with opaques in a dress / skirt suit.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/11/2018 14:46

Second shoes are better. For me, the issue with the first shoes is that they have a T bar type strap which cuts you foot in half a bit. If it was a strap kind of criss-crossed over, I think they would look better. IMHO.

Pinkyyy · 26/11/2018 14:54

The second are fine, the first are a definite no from me

tinselfest · 26/11/2018 15:00

Don't laugh, but get thee down to a big branch of Marks and Sparks.

fruitbrewhaha · 26/11/2018 15:05

I used to work in The City and wore brogues or loafers or occasionally a pointy kitten heel, or boots in the winter. It's really depressing that women feel the need to disable ourselves with high heels at work.

GraceMarks · 26/11/2018 15:08

M&S can be ok but a great many of their shoes are let down by horrible colours, weird open-toe detailing, or towering spindly stiletto heels. If you manage to catch them on a day when they're stocking decent leather loafers, though, those would fit the bill nicely.

AnnieOH1 · 26/11/2018 15:14

I quite like the second pair! I can quite clearly see them with black trousers, particularly in Autumn/winter.

The first ones though, they look like a doll's shoe!

nothingwittyhere · 26/11/2018 15:23

If you must wear heels, what about these

CMOTDibbler · 26/11/2018 15:36

I recently bought these and they are blissfully comfy, esp as the elastic keeps them on my feet

FlamingJuno · 26/11/2018 15:47

I can't wear much in the way of a heel owing to OA in my knees, but I got these from Clarks - two pairs for £140 and have worn them a lot. The heel isn't as high as it looks - it's actually just about right.

Ignore me - it's not the same boot - still Clarks though.
