Work shoes: would I be committing a style crime if I purchased?

Workreturner · 26/11/2018 13:15

Returned to work recently after 9 year SAHM

It’s a fairly senior corporate London role.

I’m 37 and have a good work wardrobe. Mainly Reiss and Jospeh and Sandro

BUT shoes!!! Ten years ago I wore them high and dodo not give a damn if uncomfortable. My shoe collection was nothing short of exquisite.

Now? Hmmmm I’m err more on side on comfort when comes to shoes. I’ve not completely lost my commitment to show style though.

Would either of these be a disgrace?

If yes, please point me in direction of some comfort and mid heel height black work shoes. They can’t be high heel.

I'm sorry but they're truly hideous and not far off what the queen would wear at 82...

I know that I'm missing the point OP, but can I just say congrats for the senior role in the City after 9years as a SAHM! That is all you need! Wear any shoes that you wish, seriously you rock!

MN makes out that even a weekend as a SAHP will be the last stop before the grave. I salute you. Lift your head up and stride Thanks

Workreturner · 26/11/2018 18:42

I posted and then completely forgot that I had done, so sorry it radio silence

Thank you for helping me see the light. I took another look and quite honestly I felt nauseous for even considering them.

@TeaAddict235
Thank you! I’ve landed on my feet, that’s for sure but it’s a very delicate balancing act as I’m a single mother. Time will tell how it pans out but initial experience is positive.

I’d not considered Dune, so thanks to precious poster. Also forgotten about kurt Geiger and nine west and Carvela, also worth a look.

It's really depressing that women feel the need to disable ourselves with high heels at work

Oh nonsense.

I don’t “feel the need” to do a damn thing.

@FlamingJuno
@nothingwitty

I really like them! But not great for walk to station, then office and back again?

Op my mum wears shoes like that and she is 60.

Have you considered brouges or loafed from Russell and Bromley?

Bluntness100 · 26/11/2018 19:02

The first shoes look like something nanny McPhee would wear in the hideous stage. The second pair not as bad, not good, but not as bad.

Racecardriver · 26/11/2018 19:02

Not very professional

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2018 19:13

Well done on the job
It can be tricky after a break to buy stuff that’s right, I had this after a break when pg felt I lost my mojo and ordered some bad stuff
The rest of your wardrobe sounds good so I’m sure you’ll get something nice
I’m willing you to buy something whilst the sales are on atm

emsyj37 · 26/11/2018 19:13

When I worked in the city everyone wore trainers to the office and kept their naice shoes under the desk to change into. Is that not standard any more??
Generally Clarks heels are really comfortable to walk in, also Lotus occasionally have some ok styles which are very comfy. I've got a pair of high heeled mary janes from there that I can wear all day (including walking to the station).
I think you wear your heels down too fast walking to the station in them any way, regardless of comfort- for that reason alone I say get trainers for the commute and leave the pretty shoes at work.

Verbena87 · 26/11/2018 19:23

Flat black brogues go with absolutely everything. I’ve got Clarks ones at the moment (fine, comfy, neutral) but previously had a beautiful leather-soled pair by Bertie that were genuinely stylish rather than just unobtrusive.

And to echo a previous poster, well bloody done! Hope your new job and the balancing act that is being a working mum both work out brilliantly.

SingingGoldfinch · 26/11/2018 19:34

I have these ankle boots from Clarks - not exactly high fashion but stylish enough and super comfy! I used to wear heels for work but have to walk a fair distance to and from and got fed up of changing in and out of flats to walk in/home. These are the perfect compromise for me.

Craftycorvid · 26/11/2018 19:41

I can’t ‘do’ heels at all but some outfits call for them so....Fly London? They have a lot of styles with a bit of height to them but you can still walk without weeping in pain (always a bonus) Grin

ScoopyDoo · 26/11/2018 19:59

I know you said mid heel BUT if you are in any way interested in the fantastic world of flat shoes, the blog 'en brogue' is a great guide.

Mumshotel · 26/11/2018 20:14

I dont like either. I wear loafer flats on train/commute. Then change into heels in work. Lk Bennett and Clarke's are most of mine and they are very comfy. I also have a very very comfy pair of heels from la redoute but they are a Scandinavian make. I can't remember hyjol or something. They were about £150. Very glam and unbelievably like slippers. Tonight I forgot to change into my flats and did my walk/train in them. Only realised when I got home. They are high too. Stiletto. Small platform and almond toe. I only really like thin heels.

Mumshotel · 26/11/2018 20:16

Hogl are the really really comfy stilletos

Mumshotel · 26/11/2018 20:19

These are a smaller heel than mine. I bet they are like a dream

foxtiger · 26/11/2018 20:35

The ones with the criss-cross straps look a bit "safe" and uninspiring to me, but are probably very comfortable. I suspect the second pair would be less comfortable as the heels are set so far back - I've known shoes like that to make me feel like the ligaments under my arches are getting over-stretched.

If you can comfortably wear that height of heel I want to suggest you check out some of Ruby Shoo's styles, like these or these. They are fun and interesting (and I find them very comfortable) but I don't think they'd in inappropriate for an office role.

lifebegins50 · 26/11/2018 20:41

#CMOTDibbler, love those!

ZackPizzazz · 26/11/2018 20:56

Sorry but both of those are... Well, awful. Flat ankle boots are where it's at at the moment, or if the environment is really corporate then brogues or loafers are just as comfy and much fresher.

If I had a sound budget for shoes and needed something that wouldn't bring down Joseph I'd get some Grenson loafers. I'm lusting after the Clara in a big way right now.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 26/11/2018 21:04

I can't help looking at those and thinking hmmmm they look comfy 😁 not the most attractive, but I'm with you. I'd rather be comfortable.. I'm mid 40s and would wear killer heels all day in my 20s and 30s, now they cripple me. Boden do some comfortable kitten heels. I now tend to wear flat boots now it's colder, or wear trainers into work and change into smaller heels

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 27/11/2018 05:14

Had exactly this dilemma. Far too old for corporate heels. Want to look smart but wanted to be able to stride around, not teeter or hobble!

Went for some mid-high round-toe heels from Ecco. Very comfortable, easy to walk in, smart.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 27/11/2018 05:15

And wear boots/trainers to commute

Monty27 · 27/11/2018 05:19

If you're going to wear comfie shoes you need to find a way of making them appear stylish. The rest of your outfit needs to be quirky. To take the eye away from them and to look alert, up to date, and interesting. 😊
