Work shoes: would I be committing a style crime if I purchased?

Workreturner · 26/11/2018 13:15

Returned to work recently after 9 year SAHM

It’s a fairly senior corporate London role.

I’m 37 and have a good work wardrobe. Mainly Reiss and Jospeh and Sandro

BUT shoes!!! Ten years ago I wore them high and dodo not give a damn if uncomfortable. My shoe collection was nothing short of exquisite.

Now? Hmmmm I’m err more on side on comfort when comes to shoes. I’ve not completely lost my commitment to show style though.

Would either of these be a disgrace?

If yes, please point me in direction of some comfort and mid heel height black work shoes. They can’t be high heel.

God I hate fly shoes

shearwater · 27/11/2018 05:28

Really terrible shoes, sorry.

Some sensible heeled court shoes would be better, and also up to date, as square-heeled shoes have been fashionable this year. I have flat feet and plantar fasciitis and wear special insoles in most shoes, whereas I can wear these all day without the insoles and walk across town to meetings without changing my footwear.

I also find ankle boots with a small heel very comfortable and they look nice with both dresses and trousers.

LellyMcKelly · 27/11/2018 05:45

I have a pair of these in black and another pair in navy. I bought them over a year ago and they still look perfect. I wear one pair or the other every day to work so they’re well used. I think some heels look a bit dated and ‘try hard’ these days.

Agreed. I think stiletto heels at work make you look like a contestant on The Apprentice.

partypooper40 · 27/11/2018 06:22

I really want a pair of Feragamo mid heels. Everytime I have seen a woman in them she looks super well put together and stylish.

OP these are your friends.

I have 3 pairs

Elegant heel but walkable in and comfy, comfortable pointy toe ( I never usually choose pointy)- and straps that secure your foot

Workreturner · 27/11/2018 06:29

@Missfliss you may just have nailed it. Reasonable price too

Also liked these

Ps thanks for suggestions re ankle boots. I’m sorted on that front. Forgives flat suede pair from Russell and Bromley and another smooth leather

I wear lots of brogues/loafers. I walk a couple of miles a day. I keep a pair of heeled shoes under my desk to wear if I want to but in reality that doesn’t happen often.

These are my this winter’s buy, really smart and comfortable with a good comfy sole.

Workreturner · 27/11/2018 06:32

Forgives should read gorgeous

Brogues are a good look but not for me

woopdewoop · 27/11/2018 06:34

They would both be an absolute crime. You can't wear Reiss, Sandro and Joseph then wear those. Good suggestions @spanishwife

LoniceraJaponica · 27/11/2018 07:16

I really like those shoes missfliss

I agree with various pp that it is a shame that women feel obliged to wear uncomfortbale shoes to look "professional".

I just cannot walk in anything higher than 2.5 inches. I also need shoes that come higher up my foot as I have narrrow heels so most loafers/court shoes are like flip flops on me. So I wear shoes that most posters on here would sneer at because they are the only ones that fit and are comfortable enough to walk in.

I have a pair of shoes similar to the second pair in the OP. They look fine with opaques, and trousers IMO.

Biologifemini · 27/11/2018 07:24

They are very cool and joli-laide
If you are Alexa Chung or a hipster you are fine. But don’t wear them with a pencil skirt and jacket as it will look awful (!!).
For me though a pair of classic courts with a corporate suit is a fashion crime.

I'm probably way off mark but here are my expensive ideas 😂

Congratulations on the job op hope it goes well 😻

Marmelised · 27/11/2018 07:42

I see you have some better recommendations so thats good. I came on thread to say i have first pair you showed in your op. They are for quite a wide foot and my soul dies a little everytime i wear them as they are just so ugly. Due to foot problems and a longish walk to work I need sensible mary jane type shoe plus heel. My choice is limited as i have non standard size feet but if you have a choice then dont choose these.

Babygrey7 · 27/11/2018 07:45

Just to say the idea that women must wear uncomfortable shoes to look "professional" really annoys me! Men are allowed to be comfortable.

Brogues or flat shoes can look good on women, and are much more comfy

Lots of fashionable flat shoes about

GraceMarks · 27/11/2018 08:36

LoniceraJaponica I have shoes that are similar in style to both of those pictured, but there are some differences in the detailing. I don't think they're completely hideous myself, just a bit dowdy. It's perfectly possible to have shoes that are businesslike, fashionable, and comfortable, but the ones from the OP's first post ain't it!

Biologifemini have to say, I think classic courts + smart skirt suit = my mum at work in the late 80s. But it appears we are in the minority!

hippogriffwobble · 27/11/2018 08:46

Try Frankie4 - Australian company but free worldwide shipping I think

@gracemarks
Agree
It all looked very the apprentice.
I think clumpy shoes are back in fashion.
Stick to your guns OP!

There is a FAB fab wedge shoe that Dune do. I have actually bought each colour and wear them loads. Super comfortable and smart. But annoyingly, I am in travelling and the dune website won't work so I can't show you 😏
(This country block google and Facebook and dune, but the Mumsnet app works beautifully 😆).

It's closed toe, no rope parts like a lot of wedges. I have them in blue suede, mink suede and blush leather. The dark blue suede are my favourite. So comfortable to wear and walk in.

I also bought a low heel patent shoe with an ankle strap from Sezane after a recommendation on here. Those are very chic, but annoyingly they squeak a bit when I walk. Not quite they professional demeanour I want to give but I am hoping they loosen up with wear, and they do look stunning.

I also returned to work with what in retrospect felt like it was a bang, after a break. It's worked out well; I hope it does with you too.

Sorry I can't post links.

Housewife2010 · 27/11/2018 13:03

The most stylish woman that I know has these in various colours They also come in black www.hotter.com/gb/en/donna-heels-donnxs-product?fit=Standard+Fit&colour=Tango%20Red Yes, I was shocked when I realised that she wore Hotter!

Fashionista101 · 27/11/2018 15:16

I would perhaps look at these - https://www.marksandspencer.com/leather-block-heel-court-shoes-with-insolia/p/p60139655?image=SD011T028310AASEXXEC90&color=OCHRE&prevPage=plp&pdpredirect

I wear these for work when I have to look really nice but I'm on my feet. They can look super stylish with the right outfit. And they are like gloves!

Ps I'm 29 and in the industry ;)
