Where to buy a simple piece of jewellery with some inheritance from my lovely grandma

My budget is up to £1000 because I would like it to last and be good quality.
Possibly to be able to pass it on to my daughter in future.
I prefer white gold and don’t like anything fussy.

I don’t care about labels or where it’s from, so not Tiffany etc.
Thinking a ring or a necklace.
Any recommendations please.
When I went out to have a look in my local city it made me feel emotional so I couldn’t think straight. 😢

Do you want something you can wear everyday or a special occasion piece? Personally I would go for a classic pearl bracelet but no good if you want something to wear everyday.

It's rare for me to want another woman's jewellery but I admired and coveted a friend's opal and (tiny) diamond earring and pendant set. It was modern, understated and very wearable. She told me it came from a designer in the Caribbean.

With that kind of budget I'd personally be looking at getting something custom made. My wedding ring was a custom design by a local goldsmith and made from a collection of family gold (predominantly my grandparents wedding rings but also some from my g-grandparents and g-g-grandparents wedding rings too). It's a simple ring although slightly more complicated than just a plain band, but knowing the history means a lot

try looking at a jewellery sale at a local auction house you can go and try it on beforehand; someone will have checked hallmarks a ring that is insured for £4000 would sell at auction for about £1000 so a lot more bang for your buck

if it says white metal it means probably silver but not hallmarked so can't be sold as silver, yellow metal may or may not be gold but nothing can be sold as gold silver platinum etc unless hall marked as such

Look out for any artisan open studios perhaps? Then you can find something special... or even someone you can commission a piece from, for that money.

For that price go and find a manufacturing jeweller in Birmingham and design something with them.

there is no VAT on purchase price just on premium so if commission is 24% which it is at McTears and the hammer price is £100 you pay commission of £24 and vat on the £24 so total of £127.60

so if you have £1000 you can't bid more than £780

I do wear some small ones everyday already. Some slightly bigger ones would be lovely.

If you buy diamond earings, make sure you get screw backed ones so you don't lose them.
Personally, I would avoid white gold as a lot of it tends to need replating regularly - there are different qualities of white gold, depending on the mix so if you do get ehite gold, investigate it first so you know ehat you are buying. Don't rely on the jeweller to tell you. I have 2 white gold rings, one never needs replating but the other goes very yellow quite quickly.
A bangle might be nice.

yes that true. I have 3 white gold rings on one finger and 2 of them were re plated this year. they have already gone slightly yellow again.

I was thinking diamond stud earrings too. Or a good watch.
