Pupsiecola both PC and Diana had serious doubts about the wedding but unfortunately I think it suited everyone around them so well, both families were delighted at the match and then the British public got behind them, it was almost duty and momentum that swept them up the aisle.
Diana was incredibly young and naive with a very romantic view of marriage from her own later description, while PC seemed obsessed with choosing someone “suitable”. He talked in interviews in the 1970s about his concerns on picking an appropriate person that would understand the role. I think we have all heard how the Queen Mother and her lady-in-waiting Lady Fermoy, Diana’s grandmother, were in cahoots and very much promoted the marriage.
I really think they went into the marriage with very different assumptions about what married life would be like. I think Diana just wanted to be adored by her husband and have a cosy family life with plenty of children, while marriage was very different in Charles’ world. It was clear from before they got married he was not convinced but was trying to convince himself because she ticked “all the boxes” (hate that expression!).
