Do you know of any British coat brands?

I need a new coat and am trying to buy British. But struggling to find a nice pea coat/Kate Middleton style. Ideally no more than £150 but could go a little higher.

But! I've realised that coats with a high wool content don't work for me. I walk everywhere and no matter how careful I am with my bag or changing how I carry it, I end up with worn patches from the bag rubbing v quickly. So Gloverall and Montgomery are no good.

I should have made my post clearer. I'd like a made in Britain coat. :)

The Sweater Shop is mostly British I think. I know they're mostly sweaters but I've seen coats in their stores before. Or Ness which is more Scottish tweed wool. I've not looked if they have the style you're after though.

Gloverall? If it was good enough for Churchill...

foldinggardenchair · 12/11/2018 18:51

Have you tried Celtic & Co? They make some of their stuff in Britain.

Floisme · 12/11/2018 19:00

Community Clothing is a social enterprise that manufactures in the UK. They don't have a huge selection but there's a trenchcoat

And a lot of (not sure if all) Celtic and co is made in Grt Britain although very spendiferous.

Floisme · 12/11/2018 19:03

Also www.brora.co.uk/women/coats-jackets is mostly British made, also spendy but good sales.

Bowchicawowow · 12/11/2018 19:06

Barbour! Made in the North East.

ihatethecold · 12/11/2018 19:24

I love my 2 Barbour coats. so lovely to wear. Neither are wax ones.

Bowchicawowow · 12/11/2018 19:44

This is one of quite a few Barbour’s which are lovely and within your price range.

Bowchicawowow · 12/11/2018 19:49

I think this is also lovely. It’s more than your budget but very Kate Middleton!

Elizabeth Martin

Marv1nGay3 · 12/11/2018 19:52

.... but quite a bit over £150, sorry.

ihatethecold · 12/11/2018 21:43

Mine is like the stromness one linked about. It doesn’t have a belt though and has an inner gilet that can be attached inside that make it warmer.

Uhohmummy · 13/11/2018 09:09

Jigsaw have really nice coats. I got a pea coat there last year but pretty sure they do a similar style every year.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 13/11/2018 09:33

Community Clothing also do a men's peacoat (though a bit over budget). I think you might struggle to find a peacoat that isn't wool.

Afaik most Barbours aren't made in the UK (some waxed jackets are made here) and while Jigsaw use some fabrics which are UK made, their clothes are made abroad. The companies that crow about being 'British brands' are rarely made here.

Harris Wharf, see Selfridges.

I should also add that I think that Marks and Spencer’s Best of British are made in Britain. DP and I both have tweedy type coats and they are made in Britain. They are great quality and reasonably priced too.

Nettletheelf · 14/11/2018 15:15

I’ve never seen Kate Middleton in a pea coat.

You’re going to struggle to find a British made coat that ticks both of your boxes: not expensive and not made of wool. Only the ‘quality’ manufacturers still make gear in Britain, and the output is consequently ££ and is often made of wool. I buy British made clothes when I can, including, recently, a Winser London coat which is made of wool and was priced accordingly.

Nettletheelf · 14/11/2018 15:16

Sadly, M&S don’t do their Best of British range any more.

Bowchicawowow · 14/11/2018 15:17

Don’t they Nettle? That’s a pity.

festivellama · 14/11/2018 15:27

I remember a time when M & S only sold stuff that was made in Britain.
