The longer hair isn't mine remember it's extentions so it'll never look as good unless I pay £800 for european real hair, which i can't afford.

DrNortherner · 21/06/2007 10:44

I am 30 and have bra strap lenghth hair, I do sometimes think when should I cut it?

But I think if it's in good condition it doesn't really matter does it?

Has anyone seen Katie Holmes new hair do?

hermykne · 21/06/2007 10:47

mine was at my shoulder blades, layered trendy sortish, and on hols last week and i went into the spainish hairdresser , no english , no spainish and got a bob.

and they did a fab job, and its such a relief, i tell you , its easy , light and not srcunched up. and a change. i'm 35.
and it gorws back.

some very elegant women have long hair and they maybe older and theres nothing wrong with it.
but you gotta look after it. centre parting and hanging locks either side is a bit passe.

jellybeans · 21/06/2007 10:53

I think if you like it then keep it as it is. Who cares how society says we should have our hair or we should act one way or another past the age of 30 or that only youth has any beauty. 'Fashion' is often just someone telling us how to dress with the aim of making money.

OrmIrian · 21/06/2007 11:07

Until you start to look older facially. I mean once you start to get lines. I remember hearing someone say that it's a bit of a shocker to see a smooth head of long hair from the back and then to see a lined face from the front. Of course my instincts are to say 'sod em and do what you want' but I suppose I can see a grain of truth in it.

hatwoman · 21/06/2007 11:48

on those photos I think the bob looks better - but - to me it looks as if it was carefully blowdried - so I'm not convinced we're comparing like with like. The problem with long hair is the tendency to not blow dry it and finish it carefully because it takes too long. if the choice is - nicely cared for blow-dried long hair or nicely cared for bob - then just go for which ever you prefer - but if the reality is that the choice is actually slightly scrappy/frizzy long hair compared with cared for bob then go for the bob.

Hideehi · 21/06/2007 12:15

Most days, it's neither hence why i went for long because you can do the front and tie the back up.

newgirl · 21/06/2007 12:18

i think it tends to look thin on the top when really long so can look a bit mona lisa - i think age is a factor as hair is less thick

Tortington · 21/06/2007 12:20

i'm keeping mine until i am 50. on my 50th birthday i have having sharp vial sassoon esq cut.

filthymindedvixen · 21/06/2007 13:18

I'm 37 and have longish, thick, layered, bra strap length 9and not a grey in sight so far). Everyone has bad hair days but mostly I think it looks lovely.

I often wonder what i'd look like with short hair but I'd prob get so bored with it. I like the fact that i can do loads of different stuff with my length.

I think long, straight dyed hair looks a bit tragic on older women.

When I am old and wrinkly I will have a feckin' killer cut. no poodle perm or yawny page boy for me!

JMary · 21/06/2007 15:39

My mum was obsessed with all us daughters (there's 7 of us) having long hair, purely for the reason you could only have it when you're young. I do think it is pretty hard to pull it off - it's gotta be good hair. but if you are going for a whole witchy/hippie vibe then i reckon you should wear your locks with pride.

babygrand · 21/06/2007 15:42

I'm 39 and have waist length hair. I'm having it cut this Saturday. Husband doesn't want me to, but I just think it's time for a change - I've looked like this for 20 years and I feel old! However, it worries me that my 2 dds who also have long hair will want theirs cut if I get mine done, and I won't be able to stop them!

Rumpel · 21/06/2007 20:34

I have long strawberry blonde hair with hot pink and violet through it and I am (almost) 35! I get loads of compliments on my hair. You only live once - do not want to look back at 70 and say I wish Id done this, that etc! Do what you feel good with and sod everyone else (as long as your not hurting anyone of course).

Hallgerda · 21/06/2007 21:00

I'm 42 (today!) and have long hair. I'd have to change my posting name if I had a hair cut .

paranoidmother · 22/06/2007 19:51

Hi

Two people I know in there mid-late (more late) 30's both have long dark blonde hair and have it almost to waist length. The unfortunate thing is they always where it in a low pony tail and it isn't all the same length to the bottom. The last 5 inchs look as though they've been ... well look as though there is only about 5 hairs that length and they can't be bothered to trim it.

I think as long as the hair looks healthy and doesn't look like you don't care you can be any age. I've seen some people with lovely long hair.

No offence here but my mum is a hairdresser and all the people with long blonde hair seem to look worse than people with long dark hair, perhaps as the hair gets thinner and older as it gets to the bottom you can't see it. This maybe just the people I've seen and may not be anyone else but i'm just saying.

I have waist length dark brown/red hair and am 30 and planning on keeping my hair long as long as it is thick and looks cared for.

paranoidmother · 22/06/2007 19:54

Meant to also say hat if you have thick hair and it's long when you first cut it you'll find it sticks out from the side of your head for a while and looks really odd. I've tried having short hair a couple of times and my hair just takes the micky out of me

poppy34 · 22/06/2007 19:58

as long as you want providing you keep it in good condition - get it regularly trimmed and use conditioning treatments

nothing worse than badly maintained long hair with loads of spilt ends on anyone of any age

GreebosWhiskers · 22/06/2007 20:04

I had waist-length hair when dd3 was born & it was a pain in the @rse. Even tied back in a pony-tail it would hang in her face when I picked her up from her cot. I got it cut to my shoulders at first then got gradually shorter & it's practically a short back & sides now. I'll try to scan in some before & after pics & stick them on my profile.

My parents love it but dh hates it - he loved my long hair. I just tell him he wasn't the one who had to spend 45 minutes every morning getting the tugs out.

I think my short hair is fantastic. I wash it every day in the shower, rub it with a towel & it's damn near dry.

I can't begin to describe the sense of freedom.

Cut it.

pointydog · 22/06/2007 20:16

26

should def be cut once you get to 26.

nafferoo

GreebosWhiskers · 22/06/2007 20:21

Have added pics to my profile now - go on, it'll give you a laugh.

btw it's the same child in both pics - what a difference 2 years make.

pointydog · 22/06/2007 20:24

well done, greebo!

An excellent example of why long hair should be shorn after 25. No one can argue with you now

GreebosWhiskers · 22/06/2007 20:26

Oi! Who says I'm past 25?
