What is your morning skincare routine?

I think mine is probably lacking for my age (40's) and could do with some tips please!

I wash my face with a Garnier gel wash in the shower, slap on Paula's Choice 2% BHA gel and then Olay Regenerist face lotion, including around eyes. I use Aveeno on body. That's it.
What do you do?

Boots botanics lotion on a cotton pad
Boots botanics oil something (I'm testing it for boots but using it up now the test is over!)
Alpha H hydrating moisturiser
SPF

OHolyNightOwl · 11/11/2018 21:52

So the first lotion is a cleanser? But you don't need to wash it off? Or how does it work?
And then 3 moisturisers(oil, face cream and spf)?
Dang, I really DO need to up my game! Thank you, this is helpful!

Sounds ok, but I would add an SPF 30 to that. I wash with gel cleanser, then serum, then spf moisturiser (have since learnt that moisturiser plus stand alone SPF would be better, but using this up first).

Ollivander84 · 11/11/2018 21:59

Yes it's a cleanser then oil, moisturiser, SPF Smile
I prefer a no rinse cleanser in the morning (funny about the feeling of water first thing!)

CS12345 · 11/11/2018 21:59

Nothing apart from slap on some SPF. Occasionally vitamin c first. I do all my skincare at night.

moredoll · 12/11/2018 02:28

Cleanse with Simple purifying cleansing lotion, remove traces with water, Eau Thermale Avene spray, Olay total effects serum & moisturiser with a couple of drops of the Ordinary niacinamide added, tinted SPF. This is a simplified version of what I used to do. Some people say you don't need to use a cleanser in the morning but I prefer to. I only use oils at night, too heavy for me in the daytime.

Ceilingrose · 12/11/2018 03:37

None. Water only on face. I think it's prevented skin ageing quite well.

HotInWinter · 12/11/2018 04:53

Err, soap and water in the shower, then facial moisturiser with spf 50 ( I live in a desert).
Rinse with water at night.
That's it.

I'm almost 40. People guess my age at 30-32.

I wash my face with soap and water and slap on some nivea soft and some blistex for my lips. That's it. I think that my skin looks good mostly because of my diet, exercise routine and not putting on any skin make up. Genetics does help somewhat, I have my dads skin. His skin routine is less than mine Grin. Like me he does live quite healthily though.

gastropod · 12/11/2018 05:25

A couple of drops of Kiehl's reviving concentrate (a facial oil, basically). I use the midnight one at bedtime.
That's it. I'm usually told I look a good deal younger than I am (mid forties). Gave up all other skincare a couple of years ago and haven't looked back!

professionalnomad · 12/11/2018 06:45

Wash with Kiehl's cucumber condiotining cleanser in shower
Kiehl's clearly corrective dark circle corrector SPF 30
The Ordinary hyaluronic acid
The Ordinary natural moisturising factors + HA

I use an SPF in the summer as well - usually La Roche Posay but at the moment I get up in the dark, sit on a bus then am inside all day and then get home in the dark. I feel the SPF in my foundation is sufficient

Over the years I seem to have migrated to using only Kiehl's and The Ordinary for skin care. Not sure how it happened. I am in my mid 30s and I have dry skin.

CoatedInSnow · 12/11/2018 07:16

Body Shop seaweed face wash when in shower.
Body shop seaweed face cream.

PirateWeasel · 12/11/2018 07:25

I do all my cleansing at night to get rid of the pollutants of the day. In the morning I just splash face with water then wang on some Simple rich moisturiser, and Vaseline on my lips.

CS12345 · 12/11/2018 07:27

Exploding - you have a suprise in store. It's easy peasy to look 10 years younger at 40. Wait til you're 45+. You fool no one then!! Age catches up with everyone sadly.

Notnowok · 12/11/2018 07:27

Put pixi beauty mud cleanser on and wash off with a hot flannel. Acid toner from bravaru, vitamin c serum by timeless. I use retin a at night so use spf mosituriser.
I am really in to skin care though after reading Caroline Hirons and Sali Hughes blogs. And I'm crap at makeup so need good skin.
Anyone, and there is always one who writes soap and water and I look 20 years younger. Delusional.

LunaLovesgood · 12/11/2018 07:54

What age did you all start a skincare routine? Especially in the morning? I'm only 27 but all I do is wash my face and moisturise it Blush

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 12/11/2018 08:19

There is always one who writes soap and water and I look 20 years younger.

Agreed, these threads always bring out the competitive soap and water people who look down on anyone who spends money on skincare. That's great if soap and water works for you, but why the tone of superiority if someone chooses to do it differently?

I'm late 20s and my morning routine is:
Cream cleanser
AHA/BHA exfoliator (I alternate between the two, some days I skip this, it depends what I feel like my skin needs)
Eye cream

Vitamine C serum
Niacinamide serum
Moisturiser
SPF

OP your routine looks good, but there are a couple of things I would consider changing if I were in your shoes. I personally never wash my face in the shower because I have the water too hot, and because if you wash your face afterwards then you can be sure that no residue from shampoo etc. is on your face. That's mostly a personal choice though.

I would also consider adding a vitamin C serum in for brightness and to help create an even skin tone, and I would definitely start using SPF. Especially if you use anything like a retinoid at night as that makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. UVA rays can penetrate clouds and glass, so even if it's cloudy or you are inside all day you are probably still getting more exposure than you think.

I would recommend Caroline Hiron's blog, she does cheat sheets which are really useful for getting the basics.

Also I'm crap at makeup so need good skin. Same Grin

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 12/11/2018 08:21

Wow that was a bit of an essay Blush

DoingMyBest2010 · 12/11/2018 08:23

I put face cream and under eye cream on at night. Then in morning, I just splash it with water. If my skin is really dry, I put on eve of primrose facial oil. I use Clinique facial bar soap, or a facial scrub every couple of days.

CS12345 · 12/11/2018 08:23

Nadine Baggot is the other skincare person to watch and Trinny in small doses, when she's not flogging her makeup.

I started skincare in my late teens but I upped my game about 8 years ago when I did Obagi nu Derm and in the last year or so, I've totally changed from cleanse, tone, moisturise to acid/vit c/retinol.

OHolyNightOwl · 12/11/2018 08:55

Thank you all, this is so helpful (and fun!).

I seem to have gone down a Vit C serum wormhole now and currently find myself in Korea (rohto melano) and Finland(lumene)!

I looked at my Olay Regenerist lotion and it has SPF15! Is this enough for winter?

OP posts:
OHolyNightOwl · 12/11/2018 09:05

Skincare blogs too! I'm already hooked on 5 makeup ones..It gets very expensive as I'm a complete sheep. ConfusedGrin

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 12/11/2018 09:09

The melano vit C is nice

Sitranced · 12/11/2018 09:15
