What is your morning skincare routine?

I think mine is probably lacking for my age (40's) and could do with some tips please!

I wash my face with a Garnier gel wash in the shower, slap on Paula's Choice 2% BHA gel and then Olay Regenerist face lotion, including around eyes. I use Aveeno on body. That's it.
What do you do?

1.Wash face with water
2.Put on some Nivea Soft

Done.

Do all these fancy serums actually make a difference? I bought the No7 one, cost me £40-odd but it did bugger all. Still cringing at how gullible I was.

I'm only mid twenties and have crap skin. I also wonder wether an expensive skin care routine would actually make a difference. I just don't know where to start Sad

FrigideBarjot · 12/11/2018 12:08

Dove soap and water, then Nivea moisturising cream. Sometimes a BB cream in the winter.
At night it's more complicated -
Boots essential eye make up remover
Clinique foaming face wash
La Roche Posay micellaire water
L'Oréal revitalift night moisturiser

I don’t think skincare has to be expensive to make a difference, it’s more about finding products with the right ingredients for your skin. Personally I saw a big difference when I started doing a proper routine, but it’s not an overnight fix and it can take a couple of months of consistently doing your routine before you see results.

As for SPF I use factor 30 as standard and factor 50 in the summer/when I’m outside a lot, but I use a tinted SPF which doubles as a sheer foundation because as I said upthread, make up is not my strong point!

Floisme · 12/11/2018 12:49

My morning routine is:
Tepid water (I agree the shower can be too hot.)
Moisturise
Separate SPF

Speaking as someone who tried upping their skincare game and who has had sensitive skin ever since, I would counsel against using any more products or ingredients than is absolutely necessary.

And while I totally agree with taking care of your skin, I find that what I put in my mouth has more effect than what I put on my face.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 12/11/2018 12:51

Kitkat this might be helpful for you, with the disclaimer that it’s quite a complicated routine and you’re young enough that you probably don’t need to be using a lot of this stuff.

Then this is also quite useful, it’s lists of what it’s worth spending on different products, broken down by age group.

Wash my face in the shower with Haeckels Marine Facial Cleanser
(Still in the shower) wash my face with Dermalogica Daily Exfoliant

Apply Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Melting Water-Gel Toner (it has a long name but the stuff is great!)
Apply Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream
Apply Dr Sebagh Firming Eye Cream

(Note: the foundation I use - IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream - has SPF 50 plus serum - so I don't apply SPF or serum separately).

ILoveAutum · 12/11/2018 13:12

Not delusional, I don’t give a monkeys what anyone else spends on skincare (for me it’s nothing to do with cost at all) and no ‘tone of superiority’ at all...🙄

I wash my face, with water, in the shower. Twice a day (sometimes more).

I don’t put anything on it (like moisturiser or spf) and I don’t wear make up. People generally think I’m younger than I am (late 40’s) but it’s probably because I’m short, dress very casually and don’t oooooze ‘grown up’ 🤣

My face isn’t dry, it isn’t oily, it’s just ‘normal’.

I’m not exactly sure what ‘great improvement’ I could actually hope to achieve with any products?!

If I felt it would achieve something amazing, I’d do it 🤣

Ollivander84 · 12/11/2018 13:24

See if I washed my face in the shower my skin would be tight. If I didn't use moisturiser I would have flaky skin
Without acids and cleansers then I get hormonal spots which then leave red marks
So it's skincare or crap skin for me!

insanitypack · 12/11/2018 13:24

Water and Neal's Yard baby balm

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 12/11/2018 13:27

If your skin is already great ILoveAutum then what you are doing is obviously working for you. But for a lot of people, me included, soap and water would just not cut it. Some of us need a bit more help!

JanetLovesJason · 12/11/2018 13:29

Flawless Cleanser, massaged in and removed using wet Konjac sponge.
Evolue Hyaluronic Serum whilst skin still damp
Altruist SPF 50
Alba Botanica Spf50 lipbalm
