Kerastraight permant blow dry - anyone had one?

I’ve got fine, highlighted quite fluffy hair that goes frizzy at the drop of a hat. My hairdresser has suggested I would benefit from a permanent keratin blow dry ( which lasts around 4-5 months?) as it would make my hair much more sleek and easy to manage.
Sounds great....but it’s about £170! Would anyone recommend it, or not? I’m interested in people’s experiences and whether it’s worth the money. Thank you!

I need this badly. Since becoming peri menopausal my hair has changed. Much curlier and more course.
How do I find a salon that will do it properly?
I’m near Cambridge if anyone knows somewhere.

Roobub · 15/11/2018 07:28

@CompletelyKate do you know the name of the treatment that you can't wash out for a few days?

RadioDorothy · 15/11/2018 07:31

This is my before and after, although this before pic was taken after they rough dried it pre-treatment at the salon and looks relatively straight when it's really curly, very porous, coarse and pouffy.

I did a keratin treatment on my own at home last week. I love it and wish I had done it sooner, it's changed everything for me. It's called cocochoco keratin treatment and you can get on amazon for £23. My hair is naturally coarse and wavy and will frizz at any hint of moisture in the air. This week it's been exposed to sweat and rain whilst racing around on the school run and has stayed in perfectly shiny smooth condition. I am amazed. It took a while to do but was fairly easy. I sectioned off my hair and dipped a comb in the solution to apply it then blow dried it and sealed in with hair straighteners. You have to leave it in for 3 days without washing though which is fine for me as I only wash my hair once a week. I haven't washed it yet, too scared to ruin it's silky loveliness but that will be the big test!

DiamondMine · 16/11/2018 10:51

Hi, I did an at home treatment this time last year with one I bought off Amazon. It was one where you leave it in for 3 days then wash out. I was pretty amazed at the results I have to admit. Mine lasted about 2 months but I didn’t always use the salt & Sodium free shampoo and conditioner as quite frankly they add no nourishment to your hair!

Unfortunately I found i had quite a lot of damage to my hair after 😩 however, I think it was because I had to straighten each strand 3-4 times with my GHDs to seal it in!! I have 1/2 left over and think tonight I’m going to do it again with the other half but not straighten it, just blow dry it in instead.

Has anyone just ever blow dried it? I know it won’t straighten your hair but I’m not so much bothered about that, more just wanting a sleeker mane, my hair gets SO frizzy at any sight of moisture/ humidity it’s ridiculous!

AnotherDIYSunday · 21/11/2018 19:05

@WobbleTime
Any chance of an update? Very curious to hear if you're still happy with the treatment! Smile

AnotherDIYSunday · 21/11/2018 19:09

@DiamondMine
Did you try doing the treatment without the straightening bit in the end? Would be great if just blow drying your hair works, too!

Slightlyjaded · 21/11/2018 22:13

Hi OP. How's it looking?

DiamondMine · 22/11/2018 13:05

AnotherDIY, didn’t have the the other night in the end, going to try and do it tonight, will report back in a few days if I do once it’s had it’s first wash to see if it’s stayed in without being straightened!

WobbleTime · 23/11/2018 17:36

Hi! I do have an update.....
It didn’t work! Well, it’s partially worked but my hair is silky at the roots and back to fuzzy all over. I bought expensive kerastase sulfate free products so it’s not that.
I called the hairdressers yesterday and they told me to go straight in so they could see what had happened as apparently this has never happened before (and they do several every week). She had a look at my hair and was quite baffled but has booked me in so she can re-do it for me next week. Very apologetic so hopefully it will work properly next time. For over £130 I would hope so....!
She was very nice about it any way.
So I will report back next week, after the second attempt. Fingers crossed.....

Save your money. I was searching for one with short notice and found an old MN thread about buying an at home kit from Amazon for £25. Found one that had over 400 reviews all positive. The worst ones saying it only lasted a few weeks but each pack does 2/3 goes so it's still ridiculously cheap. I did mine in July and it is only now it needs redone and I have had a pack of stuff left. My hair was gorgeous, glossy and didn't have to use straightners. I'll never go back to a salon for it again.

Bobcat14 · 23/11/2018 19:58

Agree thoughtfox. I've never been happier with my hair. It's as significant as getting my first pair of GHD's

Roobub · 23/11/2018 20:35

Can you link to which kit it was please @thethoughtfox? Or remember the name etc? Thanks.

@WobbleTime that's so disappointing! Do you think it's because you had the less experienced stylist? You should insist that the senior stylist does it next time!

dudsville · 23/11/2018 20:56

I tried this earlier this year. I must say it did nothing for me except to slightly yellow my white stands. I was on a mission though , threw money at the problem and have landed on a fabulous combination of shampoo, conditioner and hair oil that have given me good hair again. I do have to be careful not to brush my hair though, that undoes all my effort! So every three to four days I wash, deep condition, oil, blow dry, oil. Over the next days before washing again I finger comb with more oil. I have heard of most other people getting such wonderful results from the keratin treatment. Hopefully your salon can sort you out!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 23/11/2018 21:20

i do my own with the amazon kit around 25 quid, always have great results and it lasts around 3 months if i am careful on sodium free shampoo

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 23/11/2018 21:26

I bought the Amazon one approx a year ago, the bottle has lasted a year and I've managed to get four treatments from it. Make sure you wear gloves and have the bathroom well ventilated as the smell can be really strong especially if you make the mistake of leaning over the bottle like I did! My hair shoulder length, very curly/wavy and prone to frizzing. It's great for the first few weeks of treatment but it has made my hair quite fragile and prone to breaking. Always get compliments when I use the treatment though.

TheWombat · 23/11/2018 23:11

Wobble your experience sounds a bit like mine! After washing, the curls and frizz do make a return- although for me the payoff is that they are much easier to tame and once styled, my hair is more likely to stay put. So it saves me a lot of time - just nowhere close to a miracle cure!

I find that salt free, as well as sulphate free products make a big difference. It’s sodium chloride that strips out the keratin I think..

Roobub · 25/11/2018 03:23

I've decided to try the at home kit so I've bought the Chocococo Premium Gold and as soon as I have a bit of time when someone will be around to help me with the baby I'll give it a whirl!

Any recommendations for the best sodium and sulphate free shampoo to get? From looking it seems my normal conditioner (kallos keratin mask) is already free of both. Chocococo do a shampoo so I can just get that unless someone else knows if a better one!

TIA!

beanaseireann · 25/11/2018 10:12

WobbleTime
I just have to say your hair in the 'before' picture was beautiful and also in the photo taken at the hairdressers.
I wish my hair was like that ( either before or after photo)

WobbleTime · 25/11/2018 11:22

beanaseireann Thank you! That’s really sweet of you. My hair has always been fine and fluffy and now I’m over 40 it’s getting worse - drier at the ends.
In terms of shampoo my hairdresser recommended the sulfate free kerastase shampoo in the peach coloured bottle. It was £20 in the hairdressers but I found it much cheaper online - about £12 quid I think it was. Will try and link.

This is the one I was given by my hairdresser, included in the cost of the treatment:
Goldwell Kerasilk Control www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B015GNZV36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OLP-BbA72X1E5?tag=mumsnetforum-21
However, looking at the ingredients it contains sodium chloride AND sulphates - how utterly confusing. If I get it done again I’ll be trying a different one to see if the effect lasts longer..

Slightlyjaded · 26/11/2018 09:58

@thethoughtfox
and
@stepawayfromtheecclescakes

Please can you link to the products you use at home?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 26/11/2018 13:18

I use this one

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 26/11/2018 13:20

and I googled salt free shampoo to get lots of ideas as it's the sodium chloride thats the real bugger on straightened hair
