Your most pretentious beauty buy?

After going to a v posh Michelin star restaurant for my birthday this week, I have gone in to full on beauty wanker mode by dashing out to buy far too many Aesop products. I will have exfoliated myself to a skeleton at this rate and have even bought the post poo drops and animal wash just in case my elderly cats want a pampering... they definitely won't.
I need to be stopped.I am a proper twat.

I have a smug face now because I once bought someone an Aesops travel kit as a gift.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 02/11/2018 21:25

Luglio

Hilarious!

Meet0nTheIedge · 02/11/2018 22:48

Well, I have never heard of Aesop until today, but it appears they have shops in quite a few places near me, and are stocked by SpaceNK which is right by where I work. I'm going to have to investigate now!

Are the Poo drops really better than VIPoo?

SpeckledyHen · 03/11/2018 08:13

Thanks for the review of The Man Behind The Curtain DD
It’s on my long list of places if I’m ever in the area ...

If you want recommendations in the south let me know :)

Sarcelle · 03/11/2018 10:14

I am posting this quickly because I want to go off and look at Aesop.

I recently spent 54 quid on a ByTerry blusher based on an interview on Radio London. Jo Good has somebody in from Fenwicks Bond St every now and again. She said that the ByTerry blush in Platonic Blond suited everybody, took years off etc. Despite being on an economy drive I bought one. Turns out she was wrong. Not only is the shade unsuitable the formulation is not any better than the 2 quid Natural Collection I use most days. In fact the latter is better. And the compact is tiny, slippery and hard to open.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/11/2018 10:43

Never have I bought a product passionately recommended by a print or screen personality, any of them, especially one that supposedly suits everyone, that actually works.

Pinch of salt? Rather a handful needed with some glowing reviews.

Having said that, I love my By Terry eye shadow pencil.

DameDoom · 03/11/2018 11:22

Well my bathroom blinds are being fitted on Monday which gives me a whole weekend to twatify my bathroom. Sadly, a neighbour will be allowing the fitters access so I won't get the chance to see their faces when they gaze upon the wondrous selection of Aesop and other 'full of itself shizz' that I have pretentiously placed around the house.
Am tempted to decant some products to make my bottle look used. Not only will I have the products but will be seen to use them too. No stunt show Aesop for me.
I cannot see how any blind fitter would fail to be dead impressed by that.

Ooh no I'd be hiding it - I'd be afraid he might use it - the horror!

DameDoom · 03/11/2018 11:45

I did not think of that DontCallMeCharlotte Shock. Will formulate another boastful plan of action.

GinandGingerBeer · 03/11/2018 12:14

Why did I look at this thread? Grin
Now I want the dyson curl thingy and everything on the aesop website. Including poo drops.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 03/11/2018 12:18

DameDoom

That's the least of your worries. The fitters will undoubtedly do uninvited Tradesmen sized massive jobbies in your loo, according to most of MN

DameDoom · 03/11/2018 12:30

And use all the post poo drops in the process. Oh no, this is unacceptable. Athough it would test their true efficacy.

BeaLola · 03/11/2018 13:01

But seeing your Aesop goodies may decide they had underquoted you for the blinds - after all if you can afford Aesop loveliness then you could afford premium prices !

WeeDangerousSpike · 03/11/2018 13:07

Have never heard of Aesop. Will Google.

My most pretentious buy is discovering that there is a brand that is coincidentally my name. So I immediately bought loads of expensive stuff for display on my dressing table and in the bathroom.

Cost a fortune, thank God its actually quite good!

I am very very intrigued by this hair tea though - need more info please! Grin

Ratonastick · 03/11/2018 13:17

I’ve just googled Aesop and learnt two things. First that I am a gullible sheep who can be persuaded to buy any old poncy toiletries (and MN, I thank you for all for each and every one of your recommendations). Second that there is a place inRouen called Rue Massacre. What in god’s name happened there? And more amusingly, it was a local store when I searched. I live near Reading.........

PinkArmadillo · 03/11/2018 13:38

I like the sound of the Hwyl fragrance..

...but how in the name off fuck do you pronounce 'Hwyl' , maybe like 'hawwoooool' or 'eeee-wil' ???

caterpuller · 03/11/2018 14:16

Even though she annoys me quite a bit, I do tend to buy quite a lot of India Knight's recommendations from her Sunday Times beauty column. Including the Simplehuman makeup mirror that simulates natural light and costs £90. Now I think about it, that's pretty pretentious Grin

Didsomeonesaybunny · 03/11/2018 14:30

I love Aesop especially their masks and OP I’m laughing because I have post poo drops too! Outrageously expensive for what they are, my ex boyfriend bought raw peppermint oil and used that as his ‘post poo drops’ which worked just as well actually.

My pretentious purchases are Omorvicza skincare, in the last I’ve used La Mer but the Hungarian cheaper alternative is just as nice. Byredo or perfume is another wanky purchase I make and Diptyque candles

weekendatlastyay · 03/11/2018 14:54

OP when I first read it I thought you'd got the poo drops to take to the restaurant just in case !!!

Think @Alwayscheerful wins the last brownie with Dior polish remover

I hope it was a tkmaxx purchase otherwise what possessed you!!

SuperstarDJ · 03/11/2018 15:28

TK Maxx are selling 50ml travel versions of Aesop handwash. I’m not sure if this cheapens the brand or makes it even more pretentious if you want to carry your own in your handbag as nothing else will simply do to wash your hands.

PurpleNailVarnish · 03/11/2018 15:35

Omorovicza, Zelens, Rodial and La Mer are my usual overindulgences.

A known luxury brand was started by someone locally and it doesn't half tarnish the luxury when your Mum knows them socially.

Must...not...be...tempted...by...Aesop...

Alwayscheerful · 03/11/2018 15:41

Superstar
TK Max is very expensive!

Best place to purchase Aesop is Mankind with either 15% or 20% off.

It is not the first time I have felt like reporting TK max to trading standards, I am referring to their false reductions, they make me very cross because I know my prices.

I do like the full shopping experience the testers, the free samples, the bags, tissue and stickers- hence the Dior nail polish, the little Dior bag looks lovely hanging in my bathroom.

I also like a bargain and I am not afraid to hunt one down. do remember the full size empty bottles are worth £5 or. £10 pound each as the instagrammers , is that a word? buy them for product placement

hmmwhatatodo · 03/11/2018 15:48

I was given a spray bottle of omorovizsca (whatever it’s called). It’s some orange blossom smelling thing taken from an ancient perfume recipe for a Bulgarian Queen. I can’t see what’s good about it at all. Byredo Blanc perfume is yum but too expensive.

Alwayscheerful · 03/11/2018 15:48

20% off code is quick at Mankind
£2.70 per 50 ml minus 20% so £2.16 per 50ml and you might get £5 or £10 for the bottle when it's finished or you could refill with Waitrose ginger and clementine and put in the DCs bathroom.

A Chanel lipstick which turned out to be too sheer and with no staying power.
