UGG boots? What's the general consensus?

I'd like to get a pair but I've heard mixed things. Are they worth the money? Are they suitable for someone who's in their late 20s? Thanks Smile

I want a pair of the Glendale Uggs linked earlier but I think the Classic Uggs look fine with skinny jeans and a jumper, or leggings and an oversized hoody or jumper. They're just warm, comfy boots that are easy to pull on for dog walks, school runs, popping to the shop etc. I don't care if they're "trendy" or not.

I don't get the point of the fake sheepskin boots though as I doubt they're warm or last very long. There are other brands like Celtic & Co that do nice, genuine sheepskin boots that I would wear.

glagdy · 06/10/2018 11:19

My snow boots are always Uggs as they are by far the warmest boot and the only snow boot with shearling all over they inside.

Those slipper kind you're talking about I only wear inside.

I'll never forget this sign Grin

Of course they stink if you get them wet, and they leak if you continually wear them on wet ground/in the rain Hmm. They weren't designed to withstand British weather. They are Australian - you know, that place which can routinely see months, if not years, without a drop of rain.

They're slippers here in Australia. Other acceptable places to wear them: to the movies in the dead of winter; to exams at university; when taking your bins out... that's about it.

LavenderBush · 06/10/2018 11:35

I think a lot of their 'outdoor' boots are great. I have a fabulous pair of Chelsea boots which are warm comfy, excellent quality, look stylish. Now I have my eye on a pair of their bikers and am trying to justify the £175 price tag.

Their slippers and slipper boots are probably great quality as well, but personally I wouldn't wear them outside the house.

buscaution · 06/10/2018 11:42

I don't know why Australian people laugh at us for wearing slippers outside, I am rather laughing at them for paying almost £200 for a pair of slippers Confused

DD has 2 pairs. Chestnut ones are a few years old and she will wear them everywhere anywhere, the black pair she only wears for best, they don't leave the house in bad weather!

I'm over 40 so the fashion/not fashion aspect is lost on me. If you like something you should wear it regardless.

The classic short Uggs (branded, not slipper type) retail
in Australia for about £65 based on foreign current exchange rate.

I have 2 pairs of Kensingtons that I get out every winter. They are still perfect and will probably outlive me.
No one has ever shunned me for wearing them, in fact at least 3 of my friends now own the same ones.
Best boots ever.

But if we buy from Australia they are more then twice that price?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 06/10/2018 12:53

I'm not sure Ugg is even an Australian company

Dancergirl · 06/10/2018 12:55

I've had various pairs of Uggs over the years. For keeping feet warm and cosy they are the business!

I don't like the shape of the foot on the classic Uggs but a year or two ago I bought some black Abree Uggs which look a bit neater.

Yonijust · 06/10/2018 12:59

I thought they were mainly worn by surfers after getting out of the water as they kept feet warm in winter & cool in summer.

Also if the following is true, its a no from me.

Every year, millions of sheep are castrated and parts of their tails are cut off—often without any painkillers—before they're finally slaughtered for their skin, which is what UGG boots are made of.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 06/10/2018 13:11

I have a couple of pairs that are both a few years old and still going strong. I love them as they’re so comfy and easy to take on and off (I have mobility issues so that’s really important to me). The black cardigan knit ones are still in really good condition despite being worn in all weathers, the grey suede has some water marks but that’s all. I don’t know (or care!) if they’re in fashion anymore, but I would recommend for warmth and comfort.

RebelRogue · 06/10/2018 14:14

Unless it is just for comfort at home why would you want to wear out of date style boots that have a reputation of being worn by chavs and that.

Because I need comfort outside the home too. That simple.

notsurewhatshappening · 06/10/2018 14:55

I have a navy short pair that are quite old but still fab looking. Good for the school run on a cold dry day. I have tiny feet so avoid the clumpy look. Also bought some leather children's Kensington uggs 2 years ago which are a bit smarter.

Ohyesiam · 06/10/2018 14:56

To me they have always been ugly boots.

Moominfan · 06/10/2018 14:59

I have a pair still knocking around from the 00s never wear them out just as slippers round the house

megletthesecond · 06/10/2018 15:03

I can't think of anything less comfy to wear around the house as a slipper Confused.
I've got an old Just Sheepskin pair of boots. TBH they're pretty knackered but are still great for driving in the winter.

hammeringinmyhead · 06/10/2018 15:26

Ugg Australia has been owned by Deckers, who are American (Californian) and also own Teva, since the 1990s. So back in the day you looked like you had "fake" Uggs if you bought from Aus because the branding wasn't the Ugg Australia logo.

They also only use sheepskin that's been reared and used for meat despite what Peta like to spout. They only buy from farms that don't practice mulesing. Frankly it's no different to any other leather footwear.

Iwannasnack · 06/10/2018 15:38

I have the short boots. They’re not stylish but perfect for the school run/playground, etc.
Agree with other posters that proper uggs don’t collapse at the ankle and are generally rain/snow resistant if treated. Mine have never smelled and I’m on my 2nd pair

glagdy · 06/10/2018 16:08

@hammeringinmyhead fucking hell so I've essentially been wearing Tevas without knowing?! ShockConfusedGrin

Squiz81 · 06/10/2018 16:12

I got these 'Gradin' ones from the Schuh imperfects website. They are so warm and comfortable. I love them.

UGG boots? What's the general consensus?
Squiz81 · 06/10/2018 16:14

^^Those Gradin boots are made by Uggs, that wasn't clear from my post Blush

RedDwarves · 06/10/2018 21:31

I'm not sure Ugg is even an Australian company

There are multiple UGG companies. UGG Australia, which is what I saw during my time in the UK, is no longer Australian-owned, but there are a myriad of UGG brands here which are still Australian-owned. I bought my scuffs earlier this year from a place in Goulburn which makes them onsite; you can even see in to his workshop.

The design and concept of the UGG is Australian. Whether the primary company is or not is essentially irrelevant.
