WTF is going on with jeans this season?

I’m traumatised. Just come back from jeans shopping. WTF is going on with denim this season? I’m 38. I don’t want the following:

  1. Ripped jeans.
  2. Jeans with raw freyed hems.
  3. Acid wash jeans in pale blue or faded black.
  4. Frumpy high waisted jeans that kind of sag on the waist/ stomach.
I tried Oasis (blurch), Top Shop (f’ me, I feel old in there), M&S (don’t get me started on the dreadful layout, lack of sizes in store), John Lewis (too expensive), Cos and Other Stories and some offer shops.

All I want is a dark denim, straight leg jean that suits large hips and thigh (14). I don’t want jeggings or to look like an early 90’s American soccer mom.

Next slim fit here too. Manage to look like actual jeans, rather than some kind of fashion statement.

Fairylea · 14/09/2018 22:25

Next and George at Asda online do straight leg jeans in dark denim.

However, at the risk of sounding preachy- I’m the same age as you and I love all the new denim styles. Some of them look really nice when you try them on, and I think nothing makes someone look older / more frumpy than going for a safe option all the time.

If you like straight legs I would try some of the wide leg styles about at the moment. H and m have some really nice (non cropped) ones just come in for £25 ish.

I really like h and m for fashion jeans but my everyday jeans come from Tesco. I buy a size smaller than usual in there because they do tend to sag a bit.

Monsoon here - I'm 39 and a size 14.

Ruleof4 · 14/09/2018 22:27

Nine by Savannah Miller, Debenhams do them

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2018 23:17

Next - but even with a zip and two buttons they need a belt or else they creep down my bum after a hour......by which time I need a pee and did I mention the zip+2 buttons+the belt Blush

I'm 33 and before I got pregnant my last 2 good pairs were Gap and New Look.

Hmmingbird · 14/09/2018 23:22

Another vote for Gap. I got a pair last week and they're amazing!

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 15/09/2018 09:12

Next drive me mad...,their sized are all over the place. No two “14’s” are the same, said the SA 😐

Bluntness100 · 15/09/2018 09:14

Tommy Hilfiger are brilliant. Have a look in their sale see if any of the straight leg dark ones are in it.

TheVanguardSix · 15/09/2018 09:16

Gap!

I got a Zara gift voucher. Hardest. Shop. Ever. It felt like I was in The Muppets costume department. What happened to clean silhouettes and lines and just clothes falling nicely? What’s with all the ‘nan’s curtains with a kick-flare’ look? Confused

ForSaleChesterDraws · 15/09/2018 09:57

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I drive past Matalan on the way to the supermarket and would never normally go in. I’m now leaving with 2 pairs of jeans- a Heidi and a Jolie (that look better on than on the picture on the website).

I quite like Next jeans but agree the sizing is totally random. Bought 2 pairs in identical style just different washes, both 12. One pair fits beautifully. Other pair nearly cuts off circulation to anything below my navel. So cross. But as I've slightly customised the hems I can't return them Angry

DearTeddyRobinson · 15/09/2018 10:59

Next Lift Slim and shape!

Kaykay06 · 15/09/2018 11:10

I’ve never had a pair of next jeans where the zip didn’t fall down, I wear Levi’s i have 3 pairs and a pair of smart replay jeans for going out and all wash and wear perfectly they are years old. I like oasis jeans but find in store sizes are rubbish so order online.
I also have 2 pairs of white stuff willow in short length which are lovely but tend to fall back to my Levi’s

BettyCrook · 15/09/2018 11:13

i love bootcuts i hope they come back. so flattering!

op primark jeans are ok, go to m and s if you want basic type or gap.

Isentthesignal · 15/09/2018 11:16

Gap slim straight are great for curvy women.

Lotsofsausage · 15/09/2018 12:58

Uniqlo/ Levi’s

MigGril · 15/09/2018 13:04

Sainsburys are great, even do smart enough ones for me to wear for work.

adagio · 15/09/2018 13:05

Which Levi’s... there are millions and I haven’t worn Levi’s since I used to wear 501’s in the mid 90’s (had to save for months to afford😁). 39 yr old mum of two, currently in M&S black skinnies. Need to up my game!

Oly5 · 15/09/2018 13:14

Levi’s. You need to go in store and try them all on. Their black straight leg are wonderful but there are loads of others

Oly5 · 15/09/2018 13:15

I’m 42 and curvy and other good brands are Lucky (££) and.. don’t laugh... Boden straight leg

MikeUniformMike · 15/09/2018 13:19

Gap. Try on several pairs and different sizes if you need to.
M&S are usually good too.

Rosegoldlilly · 15/09/2018 13:23

Riverisland do nice standard jeans, levi or Hollister. I know they are a bit more expensive but last longer and no sag

MikeUniformMike · 15/09/2018 13:24

I have Levi's and love them. They're the curve ones. Nice cut and fit. Look quite smart as they're a dark denim colour.

FlamingGoat · 15/09/2018 13:27

I'm a huge fan of the dark ink Isabelle straight leg jeans from Very. I'm 5'2 and a 12-14 and they seem to be perfect for me.
