Only wearing dresses?

Curious whether anyone here only wears dresses? I love the feel of dresses and live in them for most of the summer and thinking of continuing this into the colder months. I have some lovely casual dresses I can wear with boots and tights. Obviously this is excluding things like exercising/ gardening/ decorating

@Bejazzled. That's funny, I'm a 14 apple, fat tummy, and really can't wear trousers, dresses I find much easier.

What's the point of pockets in dresses, what would you actually put in them? A few of mine have pockets but I never use them, just find them annoying for drying as they stay damp longer than the rest of the dress.

ifIonlyknew · 10/09/2018 04:48

i never wear dresses because I can never find the right shoes

RiddleyW · 10/09/2018 04:58

I only wear dresses. I have a horrible figure and dress plus cardigan is the least offensive outfit on me.

I’m so bored but I’ve tried trousers a few times and I just feel really exposed.

TheDowagerCuntess · 10/09/2018 05:15

I very, very rarely wear dresses, and live in trousers. I'm tall and slim, but have tree trunk legs - no definition at the knee, just up and down planks with the calves being the worst part of them, and so I hate exposing them.

I have bought some maxi dresses to wear this summer, which it hadn't really dawned on me before to be the answer to my woes, so I'm looking forward to actually getting into a dress for a change.

Maxi dresses aren't really work material, so it's trousers for me.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 10/09/2018 05:41

I’m a 16 Apple with a big tummy and find dresses hide the sins far better than trousers do. I have slim legs and top half all my weight is in the middle (attractive picture I’m painting here) and struggle to find a trouser shape that suits me dresses are much more flattering.

Yes to dresses every day; yes to hold ups instead of tights; yes to pockets; yes to long-sleeved tops under short/no-sleeved dresses. It's the only way to dress!

Meet0nTheIedge · 10/09/2018 06:48

You need pockets for keys, phone, money or you can never leave the house without a bag which is a pain. I've never found hold-ups that stay up without digging in. Shoes are a problem too, I have wide feet and wear orthotics, so I can only really wear trainers, boots and Birkenstock type sandals, another reason I don't wear dresses and skirts much.

Oh yes, love dresses! Joe Browns had some lovely ones: thanks for the suggestion.

I recently decided I was only going to wear dresses for work and love the simplicity of getting dressed in the morning, not having to match top to bottoms. I started with fairly plain ones (from Next) but getting to branch out a bit now. Any other suggestions of places that do nice ones? I think I've got done nice stuff in Dorothy Perkins but that was years ago...

My main issue is that all the dresses recently have been strappy. My office is quite cold and I don't want to have to worry about colour matching bras! I'm hoping there will be more with sleeves appearing note.

What do people wear over the dresses? I like a long swooping cardigan but need to branch out with colours

I go for knee high boots or brogues in autumn/winter. Looking forward to getting out the boots again!

I actually quite like the feeling of being hugged all day by tights/leggings!

DireStraights · 10/09/2018 07:05

I wear dresses a lot. The main problem is not getting too hot or too cold in tights. M&S do loads of different tights. Cooling and Heat sensor. They look great with boots. They are so good as if you end up in a heated house or meeting in wool tights is can be really uncomfortable. Depending on dress style you can also wear trainers and trainer socks.

sunyousaw · 10/09/2018 07:15

I only own dresses, no trousers, no skirts. I am an hourglass with enormous thighs and realised years ago that that I always hated how I looked in jeans, so I just gave up wearing them. I even decorate in a dress - an old one! Summer dresses for work are always a challenge as they need to be knee covering and I'm relatively tall (and should also not show armpits or cleavage) so I am always on the lookout. Love going into the Autumn as it's so much easier.

EvilRingahBitch · 10/09/2018 07:33

To deal with cling/VPL I suggest full slips rather than waist slips because an extra layer of elastic at the waist is uncomfortable and spoils the line on more fitted dresses.
These are good

As a short person it's difficult for me to find trousers or skirts that are the right length.
I've tried most shops, a shin length skirt often hits just above my ankles, trousers are usually simply too long.
I do wear jeans at the weekend sometimes.

So I wear dresses for work, pretty much every day. They look smart and are an easy cover-all.
I also wear a dress if we're going out, it would be fair to say that I own a lot of dresses.

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 10/09/2018 11:01

I only ever wear dresses or skirts and tops/jumpers. I don't own a pair of jeans/trousers and haven't done for about 6 years.

In winter, thick tights and boots are probably better for warmth than cold jeans. What I will say though is don't wear one with a bit of twirl in on a windy day!! Unless you have really nice underwear on...

SummerintoAutumn · 10/09/2018 11:15

Please could those of you that say you are apple shaped show me some examples of what you wear?
I would love to wear dresses but they all seem to look like tents or cling to the fat!

Itsmeaga1n · 10/09/2018 12:06

I mainly wear tshirt dresses with leggings or thick tights and ankle boots. I buy the basic dresses from H&M mainly.

StoatOfManyColours · 10/09/2018 12:09

I only own a couple of dresses, for funerals etc. I'd like more, but I have very chunky legs so don't want anything above the knee. Boden have a few nice ones in black, but what's the quality like?

And then what do you put on your feet, when you have massive legs? My feet look like tiny trotters.

Holidayshopping · 10/09/2018 13:00

Boots are good and balance out your top half.

I love having pockets to put my hands into and generally sway from side to side in a ‘look at my pockets’ kind of wayGrin-I don’t actually use them to put things in them!

I don’t think big drapey cardigan size look great with dresses, either-I tend to wear little boleros or just wear dresses with sleeves if it’s cold. 3/4 length sleeves are fab-Joules have some nice ones.

Whyhellodaffodil · 10/09/2018 13:09

Top tip on the cling you get from dresses without a lining which my work friend told me last year and really works - put hand cream on your hands and rub it over the top of your tights (just over your bum/thighs/where the dress sticks). Sounds mad but It seems to take the static off and then your dress will hang straight down :)

VanGoghsDog · 10/09/2018 17:40

So, to answer a few questions:

(talking workwear here)
I wear flat black loafers nearly every day, in winter flat black boots. I also have some flat white loafers that I like and wear those with some dresses.

I have a lot more problems with shoes for trousers, a LOT more.

Tights - yes, they are a pain, double knickers does help.

How to keep warm - if a cardigan, it must be a short fitted one, I don't do anything droopy. But generally, just wear one of those thin thermal tops from M&S underneath in winter.

Always have sleeves, I can't go bare armed in work - mid length sleeves are best, smart enough but not so long you always want to roll them up.

And types for apple shape:

I avoid anything flouncy. I can't do clingy. It has to have some sort of detail on the body (but not a peplum, too much material in the wrong place) OR a pattern.

Not too high necked, but not showing cleavage either.

I don't like anything much above the knee, nor maxi lower calf dresses (for work, fine on holiday).

I personally can't stand anything (top, skirt, dress) that is lower at the back than the front.

I'd wear this: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_103030323673_-1

or this: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_028030321233_-1

But not this: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_33678+12671121_-1

Nor this horror: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_103030332013_-1

hooliodancer · 10/09/2018 17:46

I mostly wear dresses. When it gets cold I wear jeans because I hate tights with a vengeance.

I still wear dresses at work though, just change into jeans at home.

Holidayshopping · 10/09/2018 19:05

I hate tights, they are so uncomfortable. I just wear leggings-there’s usually only about 3-4 inches between the top of my boots and the bottom of my dress anyway, so I don’t anyone could really tell (not that I really care!).

PurpleNailVarnish · 10/09/2018 19:49

Maybe A line, skater or wrap dresses for pear shapes?

Yes, Boden is generally good quality but there are lots of midi dresses around at the moment so anyone bothered about their calves has plenty of longer lengths to choose from.

For footwear I wear dresses with boots, usually from Duo or similar, dolly shoes or sandals in summer.

Tights are always ok for length on me because of my aforementioned short arsedness.

sonjadog · 10/09/2018 20:17

I wear dresses probably 90% of the time. The other 10% is almost all skirts. I own one pair of jeans I wear maybe once every couple of months. You need to find tights that work for you. For me M&S Autograph XL are perfect. They fit just right and don't fall down. Finding your tights should be top priority for new dress wears.

I never wear dress and leggings. I think leggings are too bulky and make my legs look chunky. So in the summer I wear comfort shorts that can't be seen, and in the winter I wear tights.

Imstickingwiththisone · 10/09/2018 20:37

I love this idea! I have no dresses at all but wish I wore them more. I rarely buy clothes for myself though and tend to buy plain things that will go with several outfits when I do. I'd love to have some casual dresses that could be worn with tights and boots though.

It's so hard finding winter dresses in thick material, long sleeve, decent length, not too tight fitting, not too frilly. Wrap dresses aren't casual enough for me. Totally lost on where to begin!!

StoatOfManyColours · 11/09/2018 12:25

I think I need to start from the bottom up, and find some shoes that I'd be happy to wear with an exposed calf. My legs are very 'number 8' shaped, and very strong and chunky, so it's easy for my feet to look tiny and therefore my legs even bigger in comparison.

I like the edgy clothes on this pic, but I think I'm about 20 years too old.

Only wearing dresses?
