Jeans... What's 'in'?

I'm a size 10-12 40 year old. Not ultra trendy, but I do like to go with the trends! I've got two pairs of skinny jeans that are on their last legs (no pun intended!) and need to be replaced. What style/fit should I go for? Any recommendations for comfortable jeans that don't need hoiking up every five minutes that won't break the bank?

High waisted Mom jeans are great - certainly don't need pulling back up all the time as they sit securely on the waist and can be worn with either trainers or boots.

www.vogue.com/article/summer-denim-trend-wide-leg-relaxed-denim

Useless for the price bracket, but interesting to see the trend away from stovepipes. I'm a slim shortie with a high waist and wide saddlebags, so I'm hoping a gentle bootcut or flare that fits properly down the leg will be reasonably stylish this year. Anything too baggy just makes me look dumpy, and very narrow ankles with stretch denim just emphasises bum width.

The jeans in the picture of that article are ridiculous. The bottoms would be dragging on the floor getting covered in mud, really not a good look.
Wide leg jeans are nice when cropped but really that's a summer look. They were all over the shops this summer but are all being sold off cheap as chips in the sale now. If flares make a come back for winter I'd be interested to see what shoes people wear them with.
The utility trousers and paper bag style trousers are nice, maybe they would be a good alternative to jeans @Dolceandgabbana14?

TantricTwist · 27/08/2018 16:47

I'm sticking to skinny jeans as they fit the best into winter boots and for nights out and my Mom jeans are for relaxing around the house and shopping etc.

WhereIsMyDressingGown · 27/08/2018 16:52

Skinny jeans for winter definitely. They are warm and tuck great into boots. You can get high waisted so they don’t need pulling up too.

Mom jeans are nice but they don’t suit everyone. And not practical for tucking into boots.

DolorestheNewt · 27/08/2018 17:20

I agree that you look at Vogue articles for general trends, not recommendations. Of the 15 pairs in the article, some illustrate a style I'd never wear, others are more to my taste, though not my wallet.

I've seen varying definitions of paper bag waists - some are quite flat, and more what I'd call a simple tie waist, and some are very gathered (also with a tie, obviously). The flat ones are OK, but no-one who's short or has a modest cup size looks good with a frilly waist. Tall, and boobs. Otherwise they're a no-no.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/08/2018 18:12

No idea if 'in' but I'm going for classic straight leg, high waisted Levis. Have been wearing them rolled up with trainers and sandals, and today I wore them full length, with ankle boots Am really pleased with them, after years in black skinnies.

XingMing · 27/08/2018 18:37

Unless one is tall and a size 4 or 6, paper bag waists add 15lb to anyone. Pleated waistlines just emphasise the lower abdominal bulge. Flat fronts are generally more flattering to most average figures.

Racecardriver · 27/08/2018 18:39

Wide flared cropped jeans as the ultra tend jeans of the moment. Trend imported from Japan paired with platform leather sneakers if you want the authentic look. I was considering them when they were all over the toast website but I think it's going to be over very soon as a trend so boyfriend cut jeans are probably a safer bet.

HildaZelda · 27/08/2018 20:05

I don't care what's 'in' for winter because you'll have to prize my skinny jeans off my cold dead legs.

mrsoutnumbered · 27/08/2018 20:10

@HildaZelda 😂😂😂

The Uniqlo cigarette fit seem to be popular atm.

KnickerBockerGlooooory · 27/08/2018 20:39

Dolores there are some baaaad jeans on that link Grin I am still very comfy in my skinnies, but I have fallen off my wallet this year and bought a nice soft pair from Mint Velvet, and a lovely indigo pair from French Connection.

rightknockered · 27/08/2018 21:46

I really like flares at the moment, I don't have to worry about forcing my apparently enormous thighs and calves into skinny jeans. Is it me or are they getting more and more skinny. I really struggle these days. I bought some 'barrel leg' jeans from Whistles, in caramel, and they are gorgeous, but they don't look as loose on my legs as they do on the model, they look like narrow straight legs,

rightknockered · 27/08/2018 21:48

linky

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/08/2018 22:23

I am also loving the Whistles barrel leg jeans. I bought black ones back in about March, then light blue for summer, and just got the navy ones last week. (ASOS carry them and regularly do 20% off codes.) I am wearing them now with trainers, or brogues, and bare ankles, but the darker ones are good with Chelsea boots too.

KatharineHilbery · 27/08/2018 22:42

I’ve been eyeing those Whistles jeans for a while. Will investigate.

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/08/2018 22:47

Size down katherine. I’m a 10/12 and mine are a 27,with plenty of room.

sweetkitty · 27/08/2018 22:52

What’s in for pear shapes, I loved boot but as they balanced me out I look terrible in skinnies I have a huge bum and big stick out hips compared to the rest of me which is an 8. To get jeans past hips they often gape at the waist.

KatharineHilbery · 27/08/2018 22:53

Thanks judy! Am liking the grey (and also that lilac jumper the model is wearing - is it wrong to like a lilac jumper?)

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/08/2018 22:59

I saw that jumper in John Lewis, it is BEAUTIFUL.

KatharineHilbery · 27/08/2018 23:01

That was so not what I needed to hear!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/08/2018 00:15

I've been wearing Top shop Jamie's for years( not the same pair obviously!) They fit me perfectly, and hold my tummy in!.. I have a daily " uniform" of jeans and a Joules harbour top( I have quite a collection)

Blankscreen · 28/08/2018 00:46

I bought some gap real girlfriend jeans and I love them.

Really comfy not as baggy as boyfriend jeans which make me look massive, fashionable and flattering.

^^This

I'm a pear shape and Mum jeans or anything not fitted make me look ginormous.
