Please help me find a dress for a wedding in September

I am late 40s, 160 cms tall (or 5 foot 2 inches give or take)
About 150 pounds (68 kg) Sad Blush

I'd like something that doesn't cling
I like a dress with a boat neck or 1950 style collar
Half length or three quarter length sleeves
Something at knee or mid calf

I am not at all in the public eye but the bride and groom and their families are very much so

The bride's colors are champagne and blush so obviously those colors are out

Thanks in advance (and if I can order it online that's even better)

This dress from Farfetch meets all your criteria. Its not clingy, has a boat neck, mid sleeves and should be mid calf on you. Its a bargain at 55% off in the sale. Theres only one left and it happens to be your size. Any good?

LadyBrienne · 25/07/2018 21:58

woah - so many posted - yeah!

I travel a lot - I'm currently in the states

yes, you are all right - those dresses will drown me - I try them on and look ridiculous - I can't have a maxi/to the floor dress - arg

I will check out both the Lady's Maid plus Princess Haya - thank you

Yes you are right - the dresses I posted links to are nothing like what I want - I'd really like what I first thought of in my opening post because they are the styles I feel comfortable in and therefore am more confident - I am open to style though

I hate my waist - I am also horrified to discover bat wings have developed overnight

[off to find invitation to check dress code]

Lego - my legs are ok, my boobs are Ds

Molten - that Farfetch dress is lovely - would it be alright with boobs? normally with belts I feel like a sad of potatoes tied in the middle

marchesa dress - Devine
Catherine Deane - stunning

maybe I buy both of them and see which one looks best?

That Badgely mischka one is absolutely stunning and I’m wondering what formal events I have coming up....

SoyYo · 25/07/2018 22:54

Have you thought of Bombshell?

I think a lot there would totally suit your curvy shape and the event...if I had a “society” wedding to attend I’d definitely buy one ☝️

HappyKatieA · 25/07/2018 22:56

Not sure if any of these are your 'thing'?

If you have boobs then a boat neck or a collar isn't the way to go.

Bombshell is definitely worth a look. I've been lusting after this dress for the longest time but I know I wouldn't fill the bust out well enough.

I adore the one above, and in the sale! Only hesitating as the pink could be considered “blush” but it’s such a classic 50’s shape...I think you can ask them to shorten it or if you want to try/return having it shortened by a local tailor shouldn’t be that hard...would look amazing with a hat and heels

LadyBrienne · 25/07/2018 23:07

bombshell dress lovely

I’m your height and weight, we need things with waists! Either fitted and just below the knee (get things taken up to the right length) or flowing and full length. Definitely look at Bombshell, posted above, and think first about what suits your figure before you think fashion. The chicest people dress for themselves not the times.

LadyBrienne · 25/07/2018 23:16

you ladies are wonderful

LadyBrienne · 25/07/2018 23:22

happykatie - not really my thing - I know the shirt dress look is very popular and on trend but I just feel silly in them

soyyo - yes I think I need to steer clear of pinks

intherain - thank you for the good advice

SoyYo · 25/07/2018 23:23

I’m so pleased I was able to help!
I’m a curvy 5’3” (FF) and a good few years older than you but could totally rock Bombshell if ONLY I had the excuse/occasion to buy one of their frocks.
I’ve read they’ve got a good reputation so returning it it doesn’t suit you shouldn’t be a problem.
Go Wow Them!

SoyYo · 25/07/2018 23:24

Yes have a look at the silk blue option, lots to choose from Smile

Bouledeneige · 25/07/2018 23:28

Olennas sent some lovely examples - I like the Marchesa and the Catherine Deane.

SoyYo · 25/07/2018 23:41

I agree Boule they’re gorgeous...but personally being a similar shape to OP I’d find them difficult to carry off with aplomb...
If you’re a curvy petite shape you’ve got to be super careful of too much pattern, embellishments, high necks...I know some petites can carry it off if super twiggy slim but if curvy I think best to go for more classic shapes, with lower (not plunging!) necklines and a defined (not skin tight) silhouette in a block colour...either just below the knee or ankle length would both work 👍 with heels of course.
Petites can easily drown in too much pattern or voluminous styles that taller ladies can carry off beautifully

LadyBrienne · 25/07/2018 23:44

olenna - absolutely wonderful
I especially like
marchesa (although I worry everyone could see my back bulges in the cut out)
Catherine Deane

maybe I buy both of them and see which one looks best?

Good plan!

Have you already got shoes, hat and bag?

LadyBrienne · 26/07/2018 00:01

no not yet - wanted to get dress first as thats the biggest challenge for me

LadyBrienne · 26/07/2018 01:26

HappyKatieA · 26/07/2018 08:00

Love that Alice & Olivia one OP!

WipsGlitter · 26/07/2018 08:49

There's a lot of fabric in it though so it might swamp you. Fab colour though.
