Please help me find a dress for a wedding in September

I am late 40s, 160 cms tall (or 5 foot 2 inches give or take)
About 150 pounds (68 kg) Sad Blush

I'd like something that doesn't cling
I like a dress with a boat neck or 1950 style collar
Half length or three quarter length sleeves
Something at knee or mid calf

I am not at all in the public eye but the bride and groom and their families are very much so

The bride's colors are champagne and blush so obviously those colors are out

Thanks in advance (and if I can order it online that's even better)

The Alice and Olivia dress is beautiful. There is a lot of fabric but its not a heavy fabric. I think it's worth trying on.

lady that A&O dress is so beautiful and it looks like whisper light silk chiffon fabric which should be okay, even with the pattern it has a lovely v neck and cinched in waist.
Definitely worth a try...

I’d second the comment above (didn’t occur to me but it’s a brilliant suggestion) if you could go to Selfridges or similar and get a personal shopper appointment that may be your best bet to get the job done in a day 👍

I like the personal shopper idea - don't know why I didn't think of it - doh

Is it soon? Bear the heat in mind.

Loonoon · 26/07/2018 21:35

If you will be in the UK soon, maybe try a John Lewis personal shop? They will bring you dresses and accessories to try and it’s much easier than trawling round the shop floor.

Also, when you find something nice, get it altered professionally so it fits you perfectly. Buy a size larger than you need so it can be tweaked to be perfect for you. I often do this with shoulder straps as I am short and busty so hoiking the straps up can be flattering and stop my boobs sagging. With DDs prom dress that we bought online from China, the seamstress pretty much rebuilt it and an ‘ok’ dress ended up a beautiful bespoke gown.

Needle and Thread. Self Portrait or Maje. Needle and Thread are especially suitable in my view. Self Portrait come up small. All are sold by Selfridges and I would spend the day in there!

Oscar de la rents and Armani.

I just got this dress for work but it would be fab for a wedding.

Want2bSupermum · 09/08/2018 02:20

Renta not rents!!!! Grin

I tried this dress on and it was lovely. The model wearing the dress was far too thin to carry it off. Curves and some meat goes a long way with this one.

actualpuffins · 09/08/2018 02:24

How about this one?

Personally I think it's hard to go wrong with the JL Bruce Oldfield dresses.

Is that a cocktail dress? I tend to think cocktail is more glamorous than a day dress. It needs to be something you would wear with jewellery and in the evening to black tie.

Almostthere15 · 09/08/2018 08:20

I think in this context cocktail dress means evening stress really but you can get away with not full length/ball gown. It's a step down from black tie but not by much, further suggested by an evening ceremony. So Id go less day dress and more evening wear?

Selfridges is probably more trend led than John Lewis in that respect ime, i would book a personal shopper (fairly quickly to be honest) and see what they can find you

Almostthere15 · 09/08/2018 08:21

Ha. Typo. Evening dress not stress (but maybe the same thing!)

Want2bSupermum · 09/08/2018 11:09

The other good place is Fortnum and Mason. They always had a good womenswear department.

actualpuffins · 10/08/2018 21:46

The one I suggested is definitely more of a cocktail dress than any of the others suggested, which look more like daytime wedding guest dresses. The satiny jacquard fabric elevates it to a cocktail dress but you could also dress it up with jewellery and accessories.

Though I think "cocktail dress" can be widely interpreted. It sounded like the OP wanted something flattering and classic rather than "on trend".
