What is the appeal of 3/4 sleeves?

It can't just be me who doesn't get it; have seen threads where people use 3/4 length sleeves as reasons for deciding against something.

Surely if it's cooler you want proper long sleeves (3/4 knits are especially strange) and if it's warmer, 3/4 is too warm? I can see some uses for work where you need to frequently look at a watch or roll up your sleeves a bit, but that doesn't account for their popularity.

I've heard they are popular in plus size ranges because some people really want to hide their upper arms - but there are lots of them available in small sizes too.

Do some people's forearms just not get that cold?

(I can understand people wearing short skirts in cold weather because I have some of that cold-tolerance in my legs, and have read that fat distribution in the legs helps with the physiology of it, but arms, no - never developed it.)

I cannot bear long sleeves

3/4 is the longest I go!

Need to have my wrists and hands free

Older women's upper arms can tend to lose muscle tone after menopause and this is why 3/4 length is so popular in this age group. It happens to most unless you do weights or are luckily enough to not have this happen. Bingo wings Grin

I love 3/4 length sleeves - they've always been the most flattering for me, even before the accursed bingo wings

I fiddle with full length sleeves but find that 3/4 look more balanced on me anyway.

LassWiADelicateAir · 18/07/2018 23:34

As others have said they look more elegant than short or full length.

I quite like a fitted 7/8 sleeve but I don’t like loose 3/4 sleeves- as they ride up under Coats or just make me look wide. I’m petite so a full length sleeve can be overpowering ( and too long). I can’t cope with 3/4 sleeves on a winter coat - it’s too chilly! For people with elegant wrists I guess the shorter length can show them off?

I have elegant wrists. Unfortunately I have elephant legs, so no 3/4 trousers for me. Grin

I like them - they tend to end around the line of my waist which is narrow and a feature I'm keen to draw the eye too. Much more flattering than short sleeves if you have untoned upper arms too.

I hate full length sleeves as they make me feel very constricted so I prefer 3/4 length sleeves. Though in this hot weather am wearing sleeveless and short sleeves. I think sometimes they were also referred to as bracelet length. When I was working we had jackets as part of our uniform which I just could not bear work in due to the long sleeves.

I wore them a lot in winter when I worked on hospitals, they push up to a bare below the elbow level but look better than cap sleeves with a bosom of magnitude after bf
