What is the appeal of 3/4 sleeves?

It can't just be me who doesn't get it; have seen threads where people use 3/4 length sleeves as reasons for deciding against something.

Surely if it's cooler you want proper long sleeves (3/4 knits are especially strange) and if it's warmer, 3/4 is too warm? I can see some uses for work where you need to frequently look at a watch or roll up your sleeves a bit, but that doesn't account for their popularity.

I've heard they are popular in plus size ranges because some people really want to hide their upper arms - but there are lots of them available in small sizes too.

Do some people's forearms just not get that cold?

(I can understand people wearing short skirts in cold weather because I have some of that cold-tolerance in my legs, and have read that fat distribution in the legs helps with the physiology of it, but arms, no - never developed it.)

I love them.

Nothing flaps at wrist length and they are also great for wearing bracelets and watches.

Another long armed person, ones designed to be three quarter length are more flattering than one an inch too short

plusonefail · 18/07/2018 16:36

I look far better in 3/4 length sleeves. I’m curvy and not very tall and they somehow make me look taller and slimmer.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/07/2018 16:39

I’m talk with long arms. I hate them, especially on jumpers

I think it’s a cost thing. I remember when they just weren’t around about 20 years ago and now they never disappear because they are cheaper to make than full length.

EdWinchester · 18/07/2018 16:42

I am fairly tall (5'8) and slim. I love a 3/4 length sleeve. Very elegant.

UrgentScurryfunge · 18/07/2018 16:44

I'm short although my arms aren't too far off average. Standard full sleeves are about an inch too long. Normally I can fold them under an inch, but some flap around my hands, particularly annoying when driving.

A mid forearm length is quite flattering to most people. Wrists tend to be a slim part of the body, and they tend to look a deliberate length, not too long or short of a bad fit.

Oly5 · 18/07/2018 16:46

I love them. They’re elegant and look good with jewellery

CrabappleBiscuit · 18/07/2018 16:47

I'm tall but I've got a long torso. They balance me out and look better than short sleeves. Also make my wrists look thinner.

I like them and don't feel cold.

SpeckledyHen · 18/07/2018 17:39

I’m petite and I’m not wear 3/4 length or long sleeves pushed up . I can’t bear anything around my wrists and hate having to wear coats etc and try to avoid wherever possible.

SpeckledyHen · 18/07/2018 17:40

*I only wear

dudsville · 18/07/2018 17:44

I'm 5'7" and a size 12 and prefer 3/4 length sleeves. I think it looks better and it's more practical to be able to do stuff without sleeves in the way.

Jozxyqk · 18/07/2018 17:45

I'm petite & also like 3/4 sleeves. But only for warmish weather, as a thin jumper or top, or sometimes with a vest / cami underneath. Hate sleeves bunching up under a jacket, I'd not wear them if I needed a jacket. I have V slim wrists & hands despite being slightly plump ATM, makes me look a lot slimmer if I wear a slightly loose 3/4 sleeve.

SequinsOnEverything · 18/07/2018 18:04

I am another who always ruins long sleeve tops by pushing them up. I always push my jacket sleeves up and jumpers too. I do get hot quickly though.

KokoandAllBall · 18/07/2018 18:27

My elbows get very dry and I'm very pale so it's noticeable and I just feel more comfortable in 3/4 length. In fact I spent this lunchtime looking for light tops with 3/4 sleeves.

I could ask what is the point of sleeves that stop halfway down your upper arm?

Racecardriver · 18/07/2018 18:31

3/4 are the most flattering length.

CherryPavlova · 18/07/2018 18:42

Hand hygiene is much easier f bare below the elbows so for people in healthcare settings but mufti rather than uniform, 3/4 sleeves are excellent. Smart, professional but practical.

Also they do afford reasonable upper arm coverage without trailing sleeves and allow nice bracelets or watches to be seen.

KipperTheFrog · 18/07/2018 18:48

In with you OP. Can't stand 3/4 length sleeves. They just look of2f and sit funny on me. Proper short sleeves or long for me. It's annoying in winter when they're everywhere!

Romcomjunkie · 18/07/2018 20:32

I’m freezing in winter if my wrists aren’t covered. A 3/4 sleeve jumper would make me whinge all day long!

LoniceraJaponica · 18/07/2018 21:03

Me too Romcom

Anise7438 · 18/07/2018 21:06

Yes love 3/4 length sleeves hate full length and always end up rolling them up!!

HoardingQueen · 18/07/2018 22:11

My friend banned me from 3/4 sleeve tops, saying they have to be short or long, everything in between is just frumpy and what old ladies wear (from Bon Marche)....just saying

P00ka · 18/07/2018 22:11

I'm small and I love them. They look much more stylish.

P00ka · 18/07/2018 22:12

Definitely not frumpy. Shows off the thinnest part of the arm. Looks less stuffy than wearing a full length jacket.

TheNavigator · 18/07/2018 22:14

Another teeny tiny person who love 3/4 sleeves. Most 'normal' sleeves make me look like I nicked my mum's clothes Grin

starlight2017 · 18/07/2018 22:14

They are elegant. The top half equivalent of cropped trousers!
