Apparently Alexandra is going to renounce her title when her older son turns 20 in a couple years time.

Enjoying this thread greatly. Thinking about Megan's style, the look I really loved was when she wore a patterned green dress with a dark jacket and hair loose - it really suited her.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 20/07/2018 10:35

From feature on Victoria's birthday:

"...a dress fresh from the prairie" - ouch!

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/07/2018 12:00

@thatone Yes, the green suites her so well, as did the blue of the Stella McCartney caped dress.

When it comes to royal kids, Estelle of Sweden rivals Charlotte of Cambridge in cuteness - she's such a bright little personality!

Estelle is amazing. I don't know what they're doing to her to make her so amiable and up for waving at people and being cheerful, when any normal child would have a meltdown.

I agree that DoC suits dark colours very nicely - funny how pastels are a thing for royal occassions!

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/07/2018 13:27

I guess they're setting her up for the life she's destined to lead. She does seem to be a natural at it, and loves waving to the crowd and meeting people. Unlike our future monarch who always seems shy/grumpy and overawed in his public appearances, poor kid.

Monarchy (hereditary) is ridiculous. Poor children.

Clionba · 20/07/2018 14:49

I like the way that the Swedish royal family wear H&M and Other Stories etc. I know in the early days Kate wore Hobbs, LKBennett etc, but I would like to see more promotion of British brands (not just high end McQueen!)

banivani · 20/07/2018 14:51

On the other hand they're very chummy with H&M:s owners...

Clionba · 20/07/2018 14:57

So? They're still supporting Swedish brands.

Yewtown · 20/07/2018 15:09

I think were Beatrice goes wrong is her hair. It is a very striking colour so when she wears it down with hats it is just too much. Possibly this is because she favours more avant garde styles. I think Eugenie is really starting to work out what suits her best bar her outfit to H&M’s wedding. There is something about her smile that reminds me of Sarah Chatto.

banivani · 20/07/2018 15:09

They get some murmuring criticism over it, I mean. They need to spread the patronage, or it becomes support of H&M at the expense of other designers. But I agree, I think it's smart, and part of their job, to promote Swedish companies and products.

Yewtown · 20/07/2018 15:10

Where not were

theaccidentaleconomist · 20/07/2018 21:18

Estelle has been preparing for her future role as queen since she was a baby.

She attended Madeleine's wedding at 16 months old and had her own little chair-although she spent most of the time on the floor, or on her grandmother's lap, playing with her necklace. She started to cry when Victoria went up to do a reading. Instead of taking her out, her dad took her up to the pulpit and she quietened down.

She's probably going to be attending boring ceremonies for the best part of the next century, so I suppose they thought this was the best way to get her used to them.

.

mathanxiety · 20/07/2018 22:49

I think in general it's best to get very young children used to adult events that may be boring, and best for the adults to take the playing on the floor, crying, chewing of gum found under pews, etc. in their stride.

Popping into say hi 👋

RosinaAlmaviva · 21/07/2018 00:20

I found some video on YouTube of one of the annual memorial services for Louis XVI, held at St Denis in Paris. One of the pretenders to the French throne was there with his wife. He was very dignified and kingly throughout, but she was constantly fidgeting and looked like she couldn't wait to get it over with. If so I don't blame her, but it made me realise how well our RF do this part of the job.

A 3 yo princess came to France to marry Louis XV in the early 18th century (she didn't, but that's another story) and she was said to have "a great talent for queenship." Partly because she was very good at sitting still through long boring ceremonies.

user1457017537 · 21/07/2018 12:11

I think attending boring ceremonies is a small price to pay for a life of immense wealth and privilege

SleepingStandingUp · 21/07/2018 15:16

It's interesting the different approach between Estelle and George. The prepare them every day for it or keep it away as long as possible.

He's likely to take the throne in his later decades but a tragedy could see him on it with very little prep for the life

MissLingoss · 21/07/2018 15:31

George does seem to be a bit more smiley and chatty at recent appearances. Maybe he's growing out of his shyness, or maybe it's Charlotte's influence.

His gt-gt-gf, George VI, was unprepared to be king, didn't want to be, and had his dreadful stammer to contend with, but nevertheless filled the role admirably.

The King's Speech. IF there is anyone reading this who hasn't seen it yet - do watch it, it's a great film.

''I'm a thistle sifter .....'' :)

theaccidentaleconomist · 21/07/2018 16:28

@mathanxiety for a royal christening that involved lots of children rolling on the floor (and under the clergyman's vestments) check out the baptism of Princess Ariane.

This is very sweet, but sad to watch now as Maxima's sister Inés Zorreguieta was her godmother and carried her into the church.

As we are chatting about the Euro royals, here are the Belgians today.
I love the eldest daughter’s dress.
Mathilde’s hat is a bit strange.

That hat looks like it's hovering over her head! She looks great in red, Letizia is also fond of the full on red outfit. Meghan could totally wear that colour. I love the way they're basically the Belgian flag!
