Could you give up heels forever?

I'm seriously considering giving up heels, and chucking all of mine away. I really hate them, and I find it's one of the reasons I dislike wedding and christenings etc because I'm so uncomfortable.

Why do we wear them? Is anyone out here brave enough to never wear them? Can you attend a wedding in a lovely dress and flat shoes? Which ones? I don't ever see women doing it so would feel the odd one out and feel ridiculous.

I don't wear them to work and I'm so comfortable in flats, brogues etc and it's lovely.

Night out or wedding/posh event and I'm in agony can't walk properly. Attended a posh do this weekend and almost threw my shoes when I got in I just wanted them off.

I could, easily. To summer weddings etc I would wear metallic flat sandals and to winter events a pair of pointed flat pumps. They're uncomfortable and don't make me look much different as I'm short and curvy anyway so I just look a bit "tipped forward" in heels. Also, none of my trousers are the right length for heels. 30 would be ankle-flapping and 32 are too long!

sadandtired1 · 15/07/2018 16:43

I never wear heels, ever
Can't think of a single event where id have to

pombal · 15/07/2018 16:43

I have. Haven’t worn them for years or skirts.
I like being comfy Grin

MyBreadIsEggy · 15/07/2018 16:44

I totally would considering the blisters I’m currently nursing from wearing heels earlier in the week Sad

But at 5’3”/5’4”ish they honestly do make my sillouhette look better in a nice dress....therefore I’ll take the pain over looking like a hobbit Blush

Emma765 · 15/07/2018 16:44

I don't wear them anymore really. Got a couple of pairs of low block heels or wedges for weddings etc but can't be arsed in general. They're uncomfortable, make my ankles sore, a pain in the arse on cobbles or even the raised bumps at crossings. I'm nearly 30 and think I was about 25 when I decided I'd much rather be comfortable.

ReadingRiot · 15/07/2018 16:44

I had a foot injury two years ago and couldn't wear heels for a while.

It was a real road to Damascus moment. I just decided I'm never wearing uncomfortable shoes again. It has quite literally changed my life.

londonliv · 15/07/2018 16:44

I haven't worn heels in years. I find them uncomfortable & being fairly tall I look like a giraffe standing next to others! Lots of smart flats for work & on my wedding day I wore a beautiful pair of gold shoes from LK Bennett with a half inch heel.

blackbirdbluebottle · 15/07/2018 16:49

I never wear heels, what's the point they are uncomfortable to wear!

Kenworthington · 15/07/2018 16:52

I don’t have any heels. Awful things. So uncomfortable. And I believe you should be able to run away in a pair of shoes, should the need arise. Also, I’m quite on the far side and in heels I look like I have trotters. I think flat shoes look much more modern

tissuesosoft · 15/07/2018 16:54

I only wear low wedges if i’m going to a wedding or similar. Had to give up heels 5 years ago at 25 due to extensive spinal surgery. I don’t miss them.

WyrdSisterWeatherwax · 15/07/2018 16:56

I haven't worn heels in about 8 years. Was sick of sore feet and I started to struggle walking in them. I do miss them sometimes when certain dresses would look better with heels but not enough to wear them again.

I might have to give in and go for a kitten heel for bridesmaid duty soon and I'm already dreading even a low heel.

hungryhippie · 15/07/2018 16:57

I never wear them and havent for about 6 years

ReadingRiot · 15/07/2018 17:02

I was in a nightclub a couple of years decades ago. All the women were purched on ridiculous heels looking mostly miserable except one who had flat ruched ankle boots and a mini skirt. She stood out for looking different but she looked gorgeous and was having by far the best time of any woman in the room. She has become my role model.

ElspethFlashman · 15/07/2018 17:02

I will still wear heels to weddings but since everyone I know is married or not bothered about getting married, I haven't been to one in about 3 years and have none on the horizon.

(The only heels I would consider are Clarks or M&S.)

So actually Ive been wearing flats for 3 years!

En Brogue is a great flat shoe blog. Some gorgeous wedding shoe stuff, amongst a lot of trainer stuff.

IwankaTramp · 15/07/2018 17:03

I think heels look horrible and feels hideous so I never wear them.

TheGreatCornholio · 15/07/2018 17:04

I have never worn high heels in my life. Tottering around like Bambi on ice is not a good look.

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/07/2018 17:06

I'm another one who hasn't worn heels for years. I started getting those burning soles from the friction of wearing heels, and I just got fed up of it. I actually sold most of my heel collection.

I've found a couple of really great shoe designers who make cool but flat/low/comfy shoes. Not cheap though. I'm always getting comments on my footwear (it happened just today when two of the cabin crew on my flight told me how much they loved my shoes).

I'm just on my way back home from a beach wedding in Asia. I wore gold sandals (with a 1.5 inch heel).

Borridge · 15/07/2018 17:06

Google people who’s style you like and check out which flats they wear for ideas.

MsSquiz · 15/07/2018 17:07

I always wear heels (min of 3 inches) and find them very comfortable.
The only flats I have are 1 pair of havs which I wear on holiday and 1 pair of converse

Polly2345 · 15/07/2018 17:13

Last wedding I went to I bought a lovely pair of flats. First time I've dared to wear flats to a wedding. Will def be doing it again!

BestIsWest · 15/07/2018 17:16

Haven’t worn them for years. About an inch, maybe an inch and a half is my maximum.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/07/2018 17:16

I damaged the joint of one of my big toes with the result it's enlarged and I can't bend it much. So I can't wear much of a heel even if I wanted to. I'm very happy in flat shoes, or a low wedge with one or two dresses.

My 19 yo DD is a total heel rejecter. She went to a friend's wedding yesterday wearing a pretty frock and plain black plimsolls. As there was a ceilidh after, they were ideal. I'm not sure but I think she probably wears them to college formals too.

We're both short and feel no need to compensate - would rather have comfy feet and be able to stride.

Ohyesiam · 15/07/2018 17:19

I have heel substitutes for weddings.
Wedges and platform wedge sandals in metallics, much more comfy than stilettos. I’m the winter I have heeled boots, the fabric ones are especially comfortable.

OWWO · 15/07/2018 17:20

I had to give them up because of my Fibromyalgia... I miss them, but I don’t miss the agony (and I cancelled my membership for The Ministry Of Silly Walks!)

TigerDroveAgain · 15/07/2018 17:22

I never wear heels: there are loads of smart flats if you need to be dressy. I do have two pairs of cowboy boots with low block heels but that is it. I had a lightbulb moment a few years ago when I watched about 10 men stride purposefully into a meeting followed by three women teetering along on heels (all lawyers). That was it for me. I love knowing that I can always walk wherever I want whenever I want.
